Best Room Temperature for SIDS?

A nurse just came into our hospital room and told DH and I to turn the A/C way up. She said 75-80 degrees was best for baby. I pushed back since I've heard keeping the air around 70 or even a touch below was best to prevent SIDS, and she said, "Nope, it will be uncomfortable for adults, but perfect for baby." This...isn't right, is it? Everything I read says lower temps (or even using a fan) is best. Certainly not upping the A/C until Mom and Dad are sweating at night. I mean, if you like it that way, so be it. But not for baby's sake, right?

  • I've read in the low 70s as well. Our room is around 73, baby sleeps in onesie and muslin swaddler.

  • Our hospital also said 72. She sleeps in a onesie or footsie pjs with a Muslim blanket.

  • I've heard 76 and keep the apartment around that give or take a degree

  • We took a parenting class and the teacher said 68-72 degrees.

  • I also require a cool room for sleeping so our a/c goes down to 70 at night and we have ceiling fans in every room.

  • We stay around 73 at night and she sleeps in a long sleeve onesie or pjs with socks and swaddled arms out. I had to start putting socks on her because her feet were still cold in the swaddle.
  • Both the hospital and the class I took said 68-72, but my husband refuses to do that, so it is 75 or 76 during the day and 73 at night. C sleeps in a onesie and a cotton swaddle and seems to be fine.

  • Lol at A/C...fall seems to have arrived in Seattle the week and we'd have to turn the heat on to get it above 70 at night. 80 sounds like grandmother-logic, not science.
  • My ob has never once said anything about room temp. :/ We keep out ac at 72, but also use a ceiling fan in our bedroom because it gets too stuffy otherwise.

  • In the hospital I would wake up sweating because the nurses kept turning the ac way up. We keep it at around 73 at home. DS is normally in a onsie with cotton blanket or a heavier footsie pj and seems happy. He sleeps well at night.
  • Before DS, we kept it at 68 at night. Now, 72, but we have a tower fan in our room. We put DS in a footie sleeper...I prefer the ones that will fold to cover his hands to keep them warm, and a SwaddleMe.
