Question about fluid leak/hospital visit

Hi all,
I had a bug gush of fluid last night, and I'm going to call my doctor and head to the hospital after work today to make sure it wasn't water breaking/amniotic fluid leaking.

For those who have gone to the hospital for this in the past, could you please share any details about what they do at the hospital, how long I should expect to be there, should I bring a hospital bag, etc? Also, since the "leak" was last night, will they still be able to run the proper tests today?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Question about fluid leak/hospital visit

  • When I went in with my first they hooked me up to NST and checked me with the paper strip. Then they did a cervical check. But apparently my paper strip didn't turn blue enough and they sent me home. I wasn't happy.

  • This happened to me yesterday but it wasn't really a leak. If it's your water, you should still feel leaking today.

Bring your hospital bag if you think it's your water.

The test itself didn't take long but they kept me for monitoring for a while and then had me walk around before testing a second time.

Did end up actually being your water? Everything I've read says its best to decline the cervical check if water has already broken, so this is one of the things I'm concerned about. Trying to determine if I should just decline it.

They weren't very clear, they said it was blue but not enough. I guess that means there was a little bit? But I went in three days later for my induction which ended up with an emergency CS. The dr that was on call was not my dr and didn't know my case so I guess that's why I was sent home. So I'm not very sure. But if it makes you feel better when my SIL had her water break, it was broken for two days. The only way it leaked was when the baby would move a certain way bc her baby sat so low on her cervix. She had other complications to tho. So it's possible it could have been your water.
  • Mine was a leak but enough that they just admitted me and instantly hooked me up to the baby monitor. Since I had only had one contraction by then they gave me a cervidil strip and things took off from there.
I kept feeling wet and when I laid on my side and then it gushed when I sat up so I just went in to l%d

@RedBaramid‌ Exactly. I've had similar leaks in the past, though probably not this much, and at my dr's appt yesterday I had an ultrasound and fluid levels looked good, so I just assumed all was well and i'd just had some wet moments. Assuming this is the same deal, but want to get checked just to be safe. It sucks being a FTM and having no clue.
  • I'm with @RedBaramid‌. I don't think I'd wait too long to go get checked out if I thought it was my water. We were at L&D within an hour of my water breaking.

I don't know for sure but while most people (myself included) do continue to leak I think I've heard a few stories of people who just get one big gush and it's over. So you never know. Good luck!

  • I would not decline the cervical check, especially since you chose to wait so long. If they can't tell by the swab, which considering how long it's been since your initial "gush", is a possibility, they will need to check internally.

  • I had a gush o Friday that was checked via paper strip and internal. It was neg but then I had a weird discharge a couple days later and went back- this time positive. Drs freaked out, put me on IV antibiotics and induced right away. I wouldn't wait- mine was a small/slow leak and they still were upset they missed it- even talking about it during delivery. Don't wait, go now.
  • My midwife wants me to call as soon as I think my water breaks... I wouldn't have waited til after work. But as others stated, it would continue to leak out if it was your water. Mine was broken during labor (huge gush) and it still kept coming.

  • I had some fluid on tues and went to the doctor. He did a paper test and an internal and determined it must have been urine! He said if my water breaks, it'll be more like a gush and keep on coming.
