GTKY: Animals in your yard

When we got married we moved about a half hour away from where we grew up.  The only animals we had in our yard back "home" was squirrels and at night we'd see possums, skunks and an occasional bat.  Where we live now, we get deer in our yard and once, I pulled up to our old apartment and there was a fox in the driveway.  DD goes nuts when she sees the deer!  I think it's funny how much a half hour can make a difference.  Since we have women across the country, and in different countries, it got me wondering, what's in your back yard?

  • Birds, squirrels, neighbor's cat. We live in busy suburbs, so not much interesting. Where I grew up in Pa, we had a lot of what you have now.

My favorite is all the cardinals and morning doves we see (I call the morning doves country pigeons).

  • We have squirrels, birds, cats, neighbors dog every now and then. We have seen bats, owls, possum, raccoon, bunnies, and sometimes a horse. We have neighbors down the street that have horses and sometimes they get out. I live in the city if that matters.
  • I live in an apt complex in town, but there are rabbits I see pretty frequently in the wooded areas. My dogs take notice.

lol the combination of living in a city and having loose horses put a funny image in my head.  By city, I imagine NYC but clearly that is not what you're talking about.

  • Our goldfish, frogs, squirrels, birds, snails, raccoons, feral cats and bats. We actually have a bat house that was here on a huge tree when we moved in.

Yes! we also have a big collection of birds.

Also, we have an (unofficial) animal refuge under our deck.  There used to be a family of groundhogs that lived under there, then a couple skunks and now there are a couple cats.

  • At my parents house which is only like 5 minutes away I never saw half of the things I do now! We have really scary squirrels who I think are out to kill me, we have skunks, gophers, random cats that I try to scare, blue jays and robins (which I want to mate so we can have purple birds) and TURTLES!

snails?!  That really surprises me.  I'm not sure why.  I guess I've always imagined them in more tropical locations.  The only time I've seen them is in an aquarium and Jamaica.

Yup land snails! They hang out near the pond. It's pretty cool watching them climb up and down the waterfall.

  • we live in the suburbs, and close to a private airport, so not much.....we get some neighbors cats on occasions, hummingbirds, bluebirds, robins, and a couple other birds i can't identify. i might've seen a squirrel once.

at my parents house (20 mins away), we used to get squirrels on the daily, and racoons a couple times a week.

  • We technically don't have a back yard.  We live in a townhouse community so our backyard is the drive throughout the townhouses.  But generally in our front yard we get birds and the occasional bunny.  We are more in town so no deer or anything would wonder this far.

At my parents house, they get squirrels, birds, and deer.  One time when I was there I went out to grab something from my car in the early evening and a deer jumped out from the side yard between my parents house and their neighbors.  Scared me and the deer both probably because when the deer jumped I am pretty sure I jumped and made a noise as well.
  • Oh, and I forgot about this little lady who took up residence in our front yard a week or so ago: image

  • Birds, squirrels, a chipmunk, and for a couple weeks every spring we have a bunny.  I am in the suburbs between 2 small cities.

  • We just moved.. so far there has been a flock of turkeys, squirrels and some other small birds. I am kind of scared of the turkeys.

oh yeah! we have pesky mole-hills, but haven't seen any moles. at my old house, a baby mole somehow made it into my garage. it scared me. i moved. (not literally, it was unrelated, a few months later)

  • We're in the burbs so we get lots of skunks, tons of rabbits, we had a fox on our deck last week. Lots of hawks. I saw a hawk swoop down and get a little mouse or something in my front yard last winter. We have have a bird feeder so we get lots of birds - mostly house finches, chickadees, nuthatches, sparrows and titmice. Sometimes a woodpecker.

Nothing like NYC for sure! And I live in Louisiana so horses are everywhere. Our house used to be in the country so the lots are around an acre or more and people still have crazy backyard animals even though we are in town.

We're in the suburbs and have tons of rabbits and occasionally a bobcat, hawk, and a few crows.  We also have one crazy squirrel.  As far as birds, I see quite a few doves and mockingbirds.

  • Quail, snakes, frogs. Skunks hang out nearby but luckily none in the actual neighborhood.

Although, when I first moved into the neighborhood I was driving around the corner and I saw a big hairy thing scurry down into the storm drain. No idea what it was but it freaked me out. My friend was with me and we decided that it was a shrew, as neither of us have any idea what one is. Or a ROUS.
  • WOW! @beernifer I feel like you could sell tickets for people to drive through your neighborhood like the sixflags safari!

We have the typical neighborhood cats and dogs, but also deer, skunk, squirrels, Jack rabbits everywhere(!) and all kinda of birds. I can hear coyotes sometimes.

  • Our yard in Utah is boring, so I'm going to talk about the home I grew up in instead. We used to have like 5 parrots in trees behind our house, a peacock would always come to visit. Tons of skunks and opossums. Deer, bats, raccoons, and squirrels too. In Utah, we have deer in our neighborhood but never in our yard.
@snowboarderbritt where did you grow up?

  • There are deer everywhere around here.  They don't get in my back yard because we have a high fence, but the open area across from the houses has them.  Other than that, we have birds and they occasional curious cat that hops on over.

  • Birds, skunk, rabbits, and cats. We live in the city so not much wildlife to see.

  • Squirrels, birds, stray cats, an occasional opossum or skunk. I live in a city so there's not much. I can't even imagine what our beagle would do if he saw some of the animals you ladies have wandering around.

  • I'm gonna really answer now. We have a ton of deer. They are always in our "yard". Also, skunks, opossum, squirrels, snakes, spiders. We live in Salt Lake City but the city is built on a mountain. We have a lot of wild life.

  • I forgot about the geckos! I've been seeing them in my house. They don't bother me, and they give the cats something to do. As long as DS doesn't catch one and eat it...

@deedee1017 Javelinas are very cool! They look like wild pigs but AZ people get very touchy if you say that bc apparently they have no relation to a pig.  They are more closely related to hippos and rhinos than pigs.  All I know is they are really stinky and cute.

Before I googled it, I was going to include a lion king gif because in your picture, it looks like a wharthog.
