ISIS released another video supposedly not unlike their last. It targets Steven Sotloff, another American journalist. I won't watch the video, but I read at the end they target a British civilian, David Haines. I can't believe this shit.
what the fuck guys. What is the consensus? That we are wrong for continuing airstrikes against ISIS in Iraq? That we should've backed down? Are we doing the right thing here?
This is so scary.
It is so scary. I think their tactic is to rile up Americans into thinking they are wrong for doing the airstrikes. They bring these videos to social media (a good reason to not traffic them). The first two airstrikes issued were to save 40,000 civilians. I don't think that is wrong. ISIS is literally terrorizing EVERYONE who opposes them.
Well, shit, why don't we just let them have what they want? Appeasement worked so well for Europe in 1939.
I'm not suggesting for a milisecond that I know what I'm talking about, or that I believe that's what we should do, just so we're clear.
My initial reaction is FUCK. Could we have spared this life? And how many more? What is the right thing to do? Is there an end to this? And how do we get there? So many questions.
It is really scary. I not sure what the policy should be, but this is not just about those 2 Americans. ISIS is committing, what is considered by some, as genocide against the Yazidi. They are selling Yazidi women and children into "marriage" aka sexual slavery. The pictures of the Yazidi streaming into Syria are heartbreaking.
It is also scary because it is estimated that 500 ISIS soldiers have European passports. Some are American. It makes it easier for them to come in and out of our countries.

I'm not saying you think that. I just think that so many people have stuck their head in the sand for so long that it feels like all of a sudden this is a problem. This has been happening under our nose for a long time. The west can't deny it's part in the current crisis, but further appeasing this scum, and those who agree with them in our midst, will only make the situation worse.

It is hard to not feel about the death of these men - someone's son, brother - someone loves them. However, negotiating with this group will not be beneficial to the bigger picture. All they want is domination. They have shown they will do anything to get it. They will not spare our lives anymore than they will those innocent civilians (mind you men, women AND children).

This is so true. This cycle of religion/politics/power/war has been going on for a long, long time. ISIS just happens to be dubbed the most terrible.
The world is going to hell in a hand basket. I wonder if it felt the same way during the late 1930s. 'Cause this is some scary shit.
Oh, I wouldn't doubt that at all. Not one bit.
I think that with the internet and social media it is probably worse. Before it took so long for news to disperse and they never had to deal with as much propaganda as we do now. Its way easier to extremists to reach civilians directly now and terrorize them in their homes and minds than it was in the 30-40's
Well, we can ignore ISIS all we want; they aren't ignoring us. If anyone thinks they are going to stop at "just" killing the Yazidis, you are wrong. Take a look at what is going on in England, Norway, France, Italy, even our own country. There are violent protests happening in the name of Sharia law being instituted in these countries. Regardless of whether or not they are successful, there will be trouble. Why fight it in our countries when we can fight them there?
@acaudill75 are you saying France., Norway, US etc are instituting Sharia laws and people are protesting it? Or people are protesting bc they want Sharia laws introduced? I haven't honestly heard anything about either scenario, would you mind elaborating or linking info? Have to say I'm especially surprised at France being on that list since they recently outlawed religious symbols, no?

Yes, in France it's forbidden to wear a muslim head cover at schools and public buildings, such as city halls. I believe they are moving to additionally ban them at hospitals.
Is it ignorant though? Why would you go to someone else's country, where they have an established rule of law and demand that your mysogynistic dogma replace it? ISIS is basically doing the same thing, except at knife point, convert or die. Just because those protests don't have beheadings doesn't mean that Sharia law wouldn't mean honor killings for rapes, stoning and dismembering for stealing, etc. America is so doomed if people don't see a connection. These things aren't happening in a vaccuum. Why are the Jews leaving these countries? Probably because they see the writing on the wall, when you get beat up coming out of a synagogue.
And I never said that ISIS is necessarily related to what is going on in Europe. It's like saying Ebola and avian bird flu are the same. They are not but they both pose a very dangerous threat to us.
It's hard to remember everyone on this board...is she real? I must be niave because I can't believe someone would agree with those linked articles or believe them. They are conspiracy theories. So I think the pp is a troll.
I'm not going to read it but I am already pissed considering we have a Muslim on this board. Don't be insulting. I will not tag her into this shit.
Off topic, but I find it interesting that it's not ok to offend one religion, but I regularly see "Jesus" used around here in ways that are offensive, but have never seen that addressed. Now, I don't think we should offend anyone, but it would be nice if that mindset was shared more. Just an observation. ETA - haven't read the links, but they have nothing to do with my point.
We are so thankful that our second daughter, Lillian Elizabeth "Lily", was born healthy and happy on February 11, 2013. We love her to pieces.
We lost our first daughter, Hannah Grace on May 4, 2011. She was buried on May 14 during a beautiful service at my home church. We are grateful that if she could not be here with us, that she is healed and whole with the Lord. We look forward to the day when we will get to meet her. We love her so much.

How do the links have nothing to do with your point? This is not akin to saying Jesus in a way that offends a you.S
STUCK IN THE BOX
First, you don't get to dictate what offends others, and the use of Jesus the way I see it from time to time is really offensive to me. You are free to do what you want however.
And are you telling me that if Muhammad was not regularly used in the offensive ways that Jesus is that there would not be one word said here? I highly doubt that. I mean, there have been actual riots over this in the world.

Nobody is saying that Christians are crazy extremists who are going to destroy the country. There are times when I feel that Christianity does come under fire a bit here, but the use of "Jesus" doesn't qualify. The big thing to remember is that Christianity is still the majority religion here (edit: I mean the US not the board), and in the United States, people are not persecuted or discriminated against on a systemic basis for being Christians. In fact, most of our political leaders identify as Christian. So, even when people poke at Christianity a bit, it is not the same as poking at Islam.
All I will say on this is that I do not think Christianity is the majority religion in this country, not by a long shot. I think cultural Christianity is very prevelant and could even be considered a majority view, but that is not the same as the faith that is described in the New Testament.

I am saying that if instead of the lovely acronym JFC, people started reguarly using MFP, then I think there would be a lot of people getting up in arms, whereas that doesn't happen with JFC.
I think the comments on my point prove that I am right, frankly.
What got my attention was the initial "we have one muslim on this board so stop being insulting" post and I'm thinking, um, many don't seem to care about insulting another religion here, so why start now?

Sooooooooooooooooooooooo not CHRISTIAN Christians, just Christians then?
wtf.
There is an absolute difference in said faith versus a real faith. It is regularly discussed in scripture and regularly seen in this country. I would be happy to discuss this further, but this thread is probably not the place for it.

So people who identify as Christian might not be Christian because they don't interpret the New Testament the same way you/true Christians do? Hmm.
Nope, not what I was saying.

I think if your recent president and those running for president routinely quote scripture in their speeches, you're pretty safe to say the country is a Christian majority.

Except you did.
No, I didn't, I am talking about what Jesus said his followers would behave like, and what a lot of "Christians" look like in America. I think a lot of those in churches don't seem very Christlike to me based on the words of Jesus. There are tons of books written on this and why some are just leaving the church all together, which is sad. I am hardly the first person to make this observation.
Beyond that, if our country actually was a majority Christian nation, our entertainment would look a lot different. That is one indicator of what a nation values.

So, while we're on the subject for the poor persecuted Christian majority, why is there no white history month?? And if there's a women's rights movement, why can't there be a men's rights movement? And why do I have to press 1 for English when I call customer service?? Persecution!!!
I can't get the ticker to work, but I have two sons:
I truly love American Christians who think they are being persecuted. It's so cute.
I don't think that, and I actually follow the work of Voice of the Martyrs and am working on becoming an area rep for them to share stories of those who actually are persecuted around the world for our faith....actually persecuted. I have ranted before about Christians here claiming persecution for nonsense like the nonexistent war on Christmas.

I truly love American Christians who think they are being persecuted. It's so cute.
Is there, like, a Buzzfeed quiz to figure out who is Christian enough?
