Any other moms Rh Negative?

My doctor informed me that since my blood type is negative, at 28 weeks I have to be given this shot so my body doesn't attack my baby? He made it sound common, but it sounded very scary. After googling, I read that at anytime my baby's blood mixes with mine we could have trouble. I'd love to hear if anyone else knows anything about this.

It's pretty common and not too scary. If you do have any bleeding, even light, I would call your doc though. I had some bleeding in my previous pregnancy and they had me come in the next day to get a shot just in case. This time around I haven't had a shot yet, and asked just to be sure since I have had a MC, but my doc said I will be good to wait to get it at the regular times unless I have any bleeding.

ETA: Autocorrect changed bleeding to breeding hah! I guess both kind of work...?

  • I am. It was no biggie for me. Just got two shots. Everything w lo was just fine.
  • Very common, nbd. I'm Rh negative, and already had a rhogam shot due to bleeding. My mom is also Rh negative, had 3 kids, rhogam with all of us. Because you are Rh negative, if your baby was Rh positive, and if any blood "mixed", for lack of a better phrase, your blood would view the positive antigen as foreign and attack it, and then build up antibodies to it. The rhogam essentially prevents that immune reaction.

  • Thanks guys. I really do feel better. I've just never heard of that before.
  • Think of it like being left-handed. ;) NBD.
  • I am rh negative too and was also wondering about it! Dr. Google makes me paranoid!

  • It's just important to tell your dr if you've been spotting. I had some that was very light and brown so I almost didn't mention it but when I did she decided to give me the shot now.

  • It's incredibly common. And super easy to fix. Shot in the ass and you're good to go. No need to worry about the baby's blood after.

  • Very common. If you are negative and baby is positive your body could attempt to reject. I'm rh neg. I had spotting after my first trimester and they made me get the shot (which doesn't feel awesome) once you get the shot they give you a card in case you have to go to the er or something you can share the info. However if daddy is also negative they might not have to do the shot at all.
  • I'm RH negative and have had three healthy pregnancies. No problems.
  • RH neg here too. With my first, they acted like it was a big deal so it made me nervous, but it is easily dealt with and other than a sore bottom (after the shot), it is uneventful.
  • I'm also rh negative. No biggie. My dd is also negative so I didn't need the second shot after she was born. Although I've read it's important for others to know, in the unlikely chance you need a blood transfusion, you can only have other rh negative blood.

  • I'm RH negative and the doctor said the same thing to me and told me not to worry at all! My mom is RH negative and had 2 healthy baby girls...no miscarriages or bleeding at all! I wouldn't worry about it!
  • Do you know if the father is positive or negative? If the father is negative also then the baby will be. They still have to give you the shot to cover their butts but just thought I would let you know. I am negative and have had the Rogham shot many times. Not a big deal. They will give you one after the baby is born also.
  • Me too! A shot in the butt and you're good to go. NBD
  • Not much to add, PPs basically covered everything. I'm O- so also rh-. I just make sure to let the dr know of any bleeding. And the rhogam shot hurts like a B! But I'm a big baby. They always give it to me in the side of my thigh...I'm gonna ask about the butt next time. I feel like that wouldn't hurt as much.

Just want to say I had the shot in the arm and it hurt like hell. I was sore a few a days.

Otherwise, nbd and I didn't need it after birth since DS is also negative.

  • I know this is completely random but I recently had a dream that I was Rh- and was freaking out in my dream because my OB hadn't given me the Rhogam shot yet. Needless to say, I'm Rh+ and I wouldn't need the shot until I'm 28 weeks anyway. This probably didn't help but thought u might appreciate the weird anxiety dream. (I'm in the medical field and sometimes too much knowledge can cause anxiety...)
  • It is common, but not scary. You'll get your rhogam shot around 28 weeks (or earlier if you have bleeding). Try not to worry :) You'll also have another shot after delivery if your baby is Rh+

  • I am O-. However, because we have documentation that my husband is also O-, I have not had Rhogam with either of my previous 2 pregnancies. Due to the laws of genetics, my children have a 100% chance of sharing our same blood type. I have a new OB, but she is ok with no Rhogam this time either. Also, my family is very popular with the Red Cross!

I am O- as well... But DH is O+. Yay for extra shots! Lol
