Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Nursing and Solid Foods

My little one is now 6 months old and has been eating solids for about two months now. She has continued nursing about every two and a half hours, but doesn't seem to nurse for quite as long and at times just seems uninterested. She is currently eating solids twice a day (once an hour to an hour and a half after her first feeding and again after her second to last feeding for the night). My question is should I be nursing her less often now? This is my first child so I really have no clue. As I mentioned above I do feed her every two and a half hours, but she isn't always acting as if she's hungry. Any advice in this area would be appreciated! Thanks!

Re: Nursing and Solid Foods

  • Hi! I totally had this same question. I attended a session given by a nutritionist. It is normal now that your baby is on solids that he is nursing less often. She said that you are probably going to go down to about 5 feeds per day, but should always continue to feed on demand if you wish to keep your supply and not wean right away. If you want to wean, take about 3 weeks and slowly replace your feeds with an appropriate amount of formula and solids.

My baby is taking 3 meals a day now and he just turned 6 months. He started at about 5 and a half months. He now is taking one meat/substitute meal at lunch and the other two meals are cereals, about 1-2 tsp. of food at each meal. Then we will add a "meal" of veggies at the same amount in a week or so, then a "meal" of a fruit. We nurse 30 minutes before a meal and after as well, water during his meal.

Your baby will naturally feed less often.
