Child Care Waiting List

I know this was a thread at least a month ago, but now that at least the early March due dates are entering second trimester, it's time to think about day care. What is the timeline like in your area for waiting lists and such? I emailed our top choice (the day care at our synagogue) and was advised that even as Temple members (priority admission), we need to get on the waiting list TODAY! This is happening a little sooner than expected!

Re: Child Care Waiting List

  • I've worked at more than a few child care centers and it varies depending on your location. I worked at one with the 9 to 12 month waiting list. Pretty much you weren't getting in till your child was 3-6m old. Which put a lot of parents and a tough situation trying to find care for a few weeks/months. If they told you need to get on the list make the deposit and do it if that's what you want to go.

  • We are already on two waiting lists, only because they are both within a block of my house. I walk to work so it would be ideal for me to be able to walk the baby to daycare, and then walk to work everyday, rather than driving to a day care, and then all the way back to work.  I jumped on that immediately!

  • I don't mind getting on the list now, but I actually thought I might be ahead of the game and just wanted to find out what kind of timeline I should be looking out. Instead of I'm filling in "TBD" on first name and birthday on this application.
  • When I was pregnant with my daughter I put her on the waiting list at my work's daycare at 20 weeks and when she was 18 months old they still didn't have an opening. The daycare I ended up sending her to seemed to always have openings and would rearrange the classrooms to make room for more babies as necessary. It really depends on the individual facility. If you have a specific facility in mind, I think it is always better to inquire sooner rather than later.
  • The daycares near our house have a 9-12 mo waiting list for all classrooms, infants all the way to the private K crowd. I can't even get my 3yo in one of them right now. I will be signing up this one after the NT scan next week and hope I can get my DS in there as well by this time next year. We shall see.

  • As a FTM my mind is kind of blown and I'm in panic mode... still waiting on NT scan results but I guess I need to start looking now -.-

  • We are on a waitlist for our top choice. We have 2 other centers to tour, but they don't have waitlists yet.
  • I'm kinda freaking out about this myself. I don't feel ready yet. We still don't know if I will go back to work after baby. I guess we need to start looking at all this ASAP!

How can a place have a year long wait list for infants? Are you supposed to sign up before you conceive?
  • I put down a deposit just today to get on the list at the daycare center affiliated with DH's graduate school.  It must not be too cutthroat around here, because the director seemed confident that I was getting my foot in the door with enough time that a spot would have opened for me by late April when I'll need it.  That's a change from NYC, where we just moved from (and where I'll still be commuting to every day).

  • I just put my deposit down last night for care that doesn't start until June! I'm on a waiting list on every center in town. Infant care is very scarce. Still not sure what I'll do because I ideally need it starting in April. I am trying not to freak out yet.
  • I have contacted 4: 1) has openings in August and September of next year (we are having twins) assuming no one leaves the babies just turn two. 2) doesn't take kids younger than 2. 3) doesn't take kids younger than 1. 4) won't take us because DH is active reserves and not active duty military. All this and we live in a really small town so not many options. Plan B is I take a 1 year LOA from work
