Glucose test fail :( ***UPDATED****

I'm on mobile so no search function, but I did do a quick scroll over the past week or so and didn't see this covered.... So I just got word that I failed the 1 hour test, and need to take the 3 hour :(( any one else in the same boat? Or any words of encouragement from STMs that have been there/done that? I realize it's common to fail the 1 hour and pass the 3 with no issue but in still bummed & nervous. I know this sounds selfish and I should gladly do anything to ensure the healthiest baby possible, but I've had such a sweet tooth since being preggo, that I'm afraid if I have to cut out my sweets I may just spend the next 3 months pouting in the corner!

UPDATE:  so I failed :( (Although i prefer to think of my numbers a more of a D- than a fail, but I digress...)  I took the news pretty hard at first (the 3 hour reading was only 4 points above the cut off!), as I thought I was doing really well with my diet, even though I really, really enjoy my sweets these days.  But I guess some things can't be helped.

Monday I have an appt with MFM to get another u/s to check on baby's size, and meet with a nutrition counselor.  It sounds like I will be regularly monitoring my blood sugars from here on out, and am hoping I can just manage this with diet, and some increased exercise.  And I need to find a good sugar free ice cream.... (Any recommendations? LOL)

I failed the 1hr with both boys. My Dr's cutoff was 130 and even with fasting I got a 187 and 183. I went on to pass the 3hr both times.

This go around I talked to my OB and will be going straight to the 3hr. She said the 1hr is more of a screening and the 3hr is a much more accurate test.

    GL!

ETA: Oops. Cutoff was 130 not 190 lol.

  • I have failed the one hour and passed the three hour with every pregnancy. It happens all the time. Unfortunately, false positives and "borderline" results are extremely common with the one hour test. :(

This is exactly why there is a second test. Hang in there lady, all hope is not lost! Even if you "fail" the three hour test, you may just have to check your blood or do some simple diet adjustments.
  • i failed too.  womp womp

  • I failed my 1hr. Last week and am going in tomorrow morning for my 3 hour. I failed the 3hour for my first pregnancy and 'borderline failed' for my second, so I followed the GD diet for both... (But honestly I stuck pretty close to the GD guidelines for my entire second pregnancy and it didn't 'fix' the issue when it came down to test time.) The way I see it, if I have to cut out sugar and cut carbs for three months to keep my baby from being dangerously large or having breathing problems, etc. then it's a very small sacrifice to make!! (Believe me! I'm a 'sweets' person... But it's not worth risking the health of my baby to have some cookies and ice cream!!)
I agree 100%, but still had a good "Woe is me" moment after I got the call.  FX that the 3 hour goes well and it becomes a non-issue :)  Thanks everyone!
  • I just found out I failed my 1 hour test too. Ugh. Bummed. :(

Will definitely let you know if I pass my 3 hour test. Fingers crossed!
  • I failed my one-hour at 172, cut off is 130. When I thought back to what I ate before the test there was a lot of fruit and some carbs. Anywho- I passed my 3 hour with flying colors. Just make sure you can get food ASAP when you are done with the 3 hour...my blood sugar dropped to 49 and I almost passed out.
  • @PacoCat33‌ those were my numbers exactly! LOL. We must be GTT soulmates or something ;;)

    @BdblZ‌ hahaha!

Seriously though, think back to what you ate before you took the test...that really can make an impact. Good luck on the 3 hour!

Eta- b/c what you ate is very different than what you are. :)
  • What is this for ? I have one at the end of the month but i guess they assumed i knew what it was ..

  • I have mine in a little over a week. After you take it how soon do you typically get results back?
  • I had mine today so no word yet. I drank a big glass of chocolate milk before I went which in hindsight might not have been the best idea.

I took mine Friday, and they called me today.  Guessing it took a bit longer with the Monday holiday.
  • I had to take mine today, but it was fasting. Hopefully it goes ok, I can't imagine waiting 3 hours on an empty stomach!

I past the 1hr my first time and now it's become standard OP with my OB for all pregnant ladies to take the 2hr.  Going in tomorrow and not happy about it either.

Just watch what you eat the day before; ie sugars, carbs etc.

  • I failed the 1hr but passed the 3hr with my first pregnancy. I didn't realize that I was taking the 1hr test and ate a huge bowl of cereal right before I went (I'm sure that didn't help my numbers). I just took the 1hr yesterday so hopefully I passed this time!

  • Failed and failed... I've been taking my sugars for a week now. At least it's manageable, with my first I had it as well, but I also had a kidney infection that kept me in the hospital for four days
  • I failed the one hour so horribly at 9 weeks that I just failed. It's not the end of the world, though it does suck. I had GD with DS so I tested early. Had it now for 17 weeks :-(

  • Hooray for quick labs and online test results! I already have my answer and don't have to wait for a call on Monday, thank goodness. I don't have gestational diabetes! Now I can stop stressing and losing sleep. Hope to hear an update from the other ladies taking their 3 hour test this week! Wishing you all the best and keeping my FX for you guys :)
  • You guys are making me kinda nervous i go for my test on the 10th. Wish me luck!!
  • I had my first test yesterday and failed at 165!! I had a bowl of Cheerios before my appointment, but didn't think that would matter. Who knows. Soooo.... I have the three hour test on Wednesday. Crossing my fingers!

I had my test at 9am and found out the results via phone call at 3pm.
  • Just failed my one hour. I was right at the cusp. Now I have to do the three-hour test. I guess living off of bagels and fruit isn't the best diet.

I failed the 1 hour yesterday and I am taking the 3 hour next week.  I took an early 1 hour because of family history and passed but I don't know something changed.  Funny thing to me is that I have no sweet tooth whatsoever - either before or during pregnancy. I don't add sugar to anything and generally stay away from sweet things. So all these sugar drinks for these tests are more sugar than my body or baby has had the rest of the time!
  • I checked my 1 hour test results and I "failed" it by three measly points! I totally beat myself up over it and then went on to pass the 3 hour test. Don't get too worked up over the 1 hour test ladies!
  • I passed on the whole sugar-drinking. I never consume 50g of sugar in five minutes (sometimes not even 24 hours...) so why would I do that? I'm taking my blood sugar in the morning and 2 hours after my meals for a few days instead. I'm fine with it.
  • I'm not sure if anyone else has to do this? I live in Ontario, Canada and I was told by my OB that they're just making everyone do the 3 hour test the first time around now... :( I guess it's nice because you get to completely skip the first test...but it still sucks lol.
  • I failed my 1 hour test as well. My 3 hour is on tuesday. I really hope I pass because like you I have been craving everything sweet. The next 3 months will be miserable lol. But if it'll ensure my baby is healthy then I'm all for it. Good luck!!
  • They told me no news is good news I had my first test on Tuesday and it Saturday so I am guessing I passed it... How long did it take to get results back?

I had my test on Wednesday and they gave me the results on Friday. I would still give them a call to get the results bc sometimes they get lost in the shuffle.

  • Took the three hour test today. Make sure to take a protein/granola bar or something to eat right after the last blood draw. Also go right when the lab opens so you don't have as long without food. I actually slept well last night for the first time all week and got to the lab a couple hours later than planned. By the time I finished, I was going on 15 hours without food and started to feel pretty sick before I got home to eat.

Big planning fail on my part. :(
  • I have my 1 hr. tomorrow... wish me luck!!!
  • @Hufflepuff42‌ : I just had adobo last night! Taking my glucose screen today. Hope all goes well!
  • Had my test Monday, haven't heard back yet, but I have an appointment in two weeks so I figure no news means I passed lol. I guess I'm crossing my fingers I dont hear.
  • I just finished mine about 20 minutes ago. I better pass but I'm just glad to be done! I shoved some animal crackers down the minute the blood was drawn. Don't mess with me and my food!!
  • BdblZ! Totally stinks. I'm sure you'll get on a plan that you will be comfortable with. Good luck!
  • I haven't read previous comments. First of all, you're right, you didnt fail. I HATE when docs and nurses say that. That word shouldnt be uttered to a pregnant woman. You arent even diabetic. You are glucose intolerant as a result of pregnancy. We all are but some worse than others.

Second, nothing you could have done prior to the test would change the results. It is not an indication of a poor diet.

Third, you can eat real ice cream! Dont load up on sugar-free treats. They are gross. The diet is all about moderation. It is common for gd mothers to eat ice cream as an evening snack (paired with some protein). In fact, the extra sugar helps some women with their fasting numbers and avoid medication.

Fourth, i hope you learn as much about nutrition as I did. I learned eating habits I will continue for the rest of my life. I felt so great being so healthy my third trimester. No more sad faces when you mention your diagnosis, ok? There is a lot flexibility with the diet. PM me any time if you have questions. I was on the diet from 28 weeks last time and since 12 weeks this time.

Oh, and lastly, dont let the scare tactics get to you. A high blood sugar level now and then doesn't mean you'll kill your baby. It is most important to have good control of levels close to delivery so your baby's blood sugar doesn't crash. But even if it does, all you have to do it feed him/her. No harm done.
