What's your top highchair. I'm looking for something small/foldable. Also, I have a counter-height table, so it has to be tall... I wasn't planning on getting one yet, but apparently, you start using these things sooner than I realized.
We have the counter height table too and got a space saver high chair like this: High Chair
None of the other ones sat high enough and I really didn't want something else on the floor.
That is definitely an option. You feel like the space-saver one is sturdy enough on the chair? My chairs have cushions. I wonder if that would matter...
Anything that "clipped" onto something just made me worry about stability and safety. space is a HUGE issue in my kitchen so we went with the Graco Contempo highchair. It folds down to almost nothing and I've been storing it in my kitchen since we moved to the booster seat and haven't even noticed it. There's a newer version now but I don't see that many changes. The seat covers, (yes you get two!) were easy to remove and machine washable and the tray insert fit in the dishwasher but was easier to just wipe down.
We paid like $72 for ours but it worked from 4months up to 2yrs. granted my 2yr old is the height of a 3yr old and needed more leg room, hence the earlier move.
This is the newer version of the one that we have for DD. I like that you can adjust the angle of the back support and that the top portion of the tray is dishwasher safe.
I've only ever used the Space Saver with my 2 girls. And honestly I ended up taking the wipeable cushion out and just using the hard plastic seat. So much easier to keep clean that way! I hated cleaning crumbs and junk from under the cushion (I'm sure a problem with any highchair...). Never any problems with seat stability! Loved it and will use the same one again for #3!

Highchairs in general are they a must in the begining when baby is brought home , more so for when its being fed solids and baby food right ? Dont want to buy one untill baby needs it.

That's what I thought, but it turns out you're feeding cereal around 3-4 months anyway. So, if I'm going to use it that soon, I might as well register for it and hope someone wants to buy it for me.

Well, some people do, but it's recommended to wait until at least six months to feed anything other than breast milk or formula because of allergies, etc. Any food before a year old is "just for fun" to teach how to eat.
We have a FP Space Saver too. We've used it on several different types of chairs/stools and never had any stability concerns. There are straps for around the back of the chair and under the seat.
We used a Fisher Price booster seat strapped to a dining chair and never got a regular high chair for either of the girls. Planning to do the same for this one.
We also have cushioned chairs, and we had no problems with the stability of the booster. Now, the grossness of the food in the fabric is a different story.
If you use a space saver and don't plan to pull up to a table to feed and use the tray only I would be weary. My DD had chunky legs and we were not able to use the tray at all.

I have a space saver one as well and though they do have the strap that secures them around and under the chair we removed the cushion it just didn't seem stable enough for us. Can you remove the cushion?

My DD had the chunkiest legs and we were fine with the tray.
My DD doesn't have chunky legs but used the seat with tray until she was 2. I don't really how its possible for the tray not to fit.
We were not able to use the just the seat pulled up to the table, it wouldn't fit under and was too far for DD to reach. We had to use the tray.
I have a super cheap one that stays at my mom's house. Maybe that is why I wasn't able to use the tray due to chunky legs. Maybe the little more expensive ones can accommodate chunkier legs.
We have one very similar to this one, just a different print.
@Beansjjo IMO, feeding should be based on the baby. Once baby is able to hold their head up and is interested in food, they're ready.
DS started cereal and pears at 3 months. By 6 months he had 8 teeth and was great at chewing. He's been eating everything we eat (except honey) since then. Our ped guided us through it. My goddaughter didn't eat anything other than breastmilk until 6 months. Both situations were best for the individual baby.
Having guidelines is great, but you'll be able to speak with your ped and figure out what's best for your baby.
We are thinking about going with the Graco Blossom, how do you like it?
I love it. It's so easy to move and clean. I love that the booster is separate so it's like having two chairs. The chair can be used on the rolling base or on it's own too.
Huh. I've always seen the ability to sit unassisted touted as one of the main developmental signposts of readiness to try solids. My babies held their heads up before 2 months, and interest in food is hard to distinguish from normal interest in everything.
I'm blaming pregnancy brain. Hold their head while sitting. Our ped said sitting assisted was fine as long as he held his head up in his own.
Our pedi gave us the OK with my first at 4 months. We started shortly after and he loved it. My second wasn't ready until 6 months.
Honestly even if we get the ok again at 4 months this go around, I'm going to wait. After the first feeding or so it's just a messy pita especially since it's more for practice than anything else till later.

If I had it to do over again, I wouldn't get the one we got. We'll be using it for this baby too, but it's pretty much a pain. (literally, as I have broken two toes on it because the legs go out so far, lol)
It's so pretty and looks great in our dining room, but function should outweigh form in these cases.
We have a Fisher Price one that is a total PIA. I got my MIL a $20 IKEA model that is a million times more compact and a whole lot easier to wipe down. I am thinking about getting rid of the Fisher Price all together.
We will hold off on solids until 5-6 months. My older son got a few tastes of various purées at about 4 months. We waited until 6 months with my second son and he pretty much skipped the baby food altogether and ate actual solids right off the bat. It was a lot more convenient and saved a ton of money and time. My pediatrician has stated that babies need to get their "meals" in the form of breastmilk or formula until a year. Food is great for "tasting" and "snacks" after 4 months (and only if baby is able to handle it).
Edit to add: We never did any type of cereal. The pediatrician says there is no nutritional value to most cereals and baby doesn't actually digest much of it anyway (it comes out in their poop pretty much the same as it went it). So it is better to give them actual food or just wait until they are ready for real food. Unless baby is overweight and you are just trying to make them feel full without actually giving them nutrients, it seems like a waste.
Health Canada (I live in Canada) recommends not introducing solid foods until at least 6 months, so I hadn't even looked at high chairs yet. We have a small apartment though, so I'll probably look at getting something like the space saver.
I haven't talk to my OB about recommendations on feeding at all yet. We've yet to talk birthing options, so horse before the buggy I guess
We received a Phil&Teds high chair:
I'm a FTM so I can't vouch for it from personal experience, but it seems
easy to clean and transitional. We'll see!
I would never talk to my OB about how or when to feed my child. Most pedi's recommend 4-6 months, but really, it is a parent duty to do the research and ultimately decide. DD's pedi doesn't get to dictate when I feed my child fruits and veggies.
Good point! I don't have a pedi yet and am a FTM so still have lots of learning to do.

*some pedis recommend mixing a SMALL amount of cereal with formula to help with reflux. This is obviously not what I mean.
Interesting! Both of the moms I talked to about this had babies with reflux issues. So, they both started mixing in cereal at 3 months... that makes sense. Anyway. If I'm going to use the chair for feeding in 4-6 months (possibly), then I want it earlier. Plus. I like the idea of the baby sitting with us when we eat from the time s/he can sit.
Ladies, I think the important thing to remember is that the introducing solids guidelines are just that- guidelines. They also often change. I think it depends on baby's development - specifically their ability to swallow food. I mean back in the day (my grandma's day) they fed kids table food when they were a few month old (gravy, mashed potatoes) and they did just fine. I"m not saying we should do that now, I'm just saying each person should research and do what they feel comfortable. As far as high chair- find one that looks easy to clean and has the least amount of crevices to dig food out of.
I'm not registering for a high chair at all - when I was born my mom got the stokke Tripp trapp and it is still in perfect condition! So, baby will be getting my 29 year old hand-me-down high chair. I really highly recommend them - it's great too because you can adjust seat height as the child grows.
@gradschoolmom1234
Yup!! I'm getting the. Stokke Tripp a Trapp as well, it's such a lovely chair and very durable.
Highchairs in general are they a must in the begining when baby is brought home , more so for when its being fed solids and baby food right ? Dont want to buy one untill baby needs it.
We didn't use ours until DD started eating food, which shouldn't be done until 6 months whether you do the cereal, baby food, or BLW route.
We have the Joovy standing high chair and love it. It's easy to clean and really nice looking. We also have the Fisher Price Delux booster seat, which is great for traveling.
ETA: The problem with starting babies on any sort of food before 6 months is that there bodies physically aren't ready to digest food. Sure, they may sit up well, hold their heads up, seem interested, etc. but those are all visible signs. Their digestive systems physically aren't ready until close to 6 months. I realize that every parent will do what they want and most simply go by pediatrician recommendation (though any pedi that is up to date on their research will say to wait until 6 months), but as with everything, I HIGHLY recommend doing your own research on an appropriate time to start solids.
