The END of cable!?!

Tomorrow I cancel our cable. I have mixed emotions, but Comcast and I are lifelong enemies. For those of you who have cut the cord, did you go cold turkey or have crutches like Roku? I still haven't seen the RHONY reunion!

Re: The END of cable!?!

  • I have never had cable since moving out of my parents house, and they had the full package--hbo, etc. I don't remember if I had netflix right away, but if I didn't, it was shortly after. Then hulu. I don't watch either one much, though.

  • Loading the player...
  • We just quit cable. We have hulu, amazon prime, and netflix, though. I'm not sure how necessary netflix is now that we have hulu and amazon prime. Also, DH got an antenna and set it up so we get the over the air tv, co like, fox, nbc, cw, pbs, etc...and we have TiVo.

  • Following this thread. For those who don't have cable, how do you watch football? If I could answer that question, I could convince my husband to ditch cable.

  • We haven't had cable in a long time now, we have Netflix and amazon prime but don't watch either very often. Some networks stream their shows a day after they air also
  • The only cancelling we've ever done is every two years followed by immediately signing back up to get new member pricing. How do you watch football? Or is that not big in your house? I don't watch much TV but during football season I pretty much always have ESPN on.

  • Oh and we don't watch sports.. Not really sports fans so it works for us

Over the air. And for specialty games, etc, finding it online streaming and hook it up to tv.

  • About to watch the RHOOC part 1 now. We are thinking of Apple TV or Roku, then we can watch some sports. My husband is a basketball guy, but we watch all sports. My mom also has cable, so I know we can log on with her info to watch, sssshhhh... I legit haven't read a book (does Baby Lit count?) since DD was born. Cable must go.

  • We just have antenna channels and hulu and it's plenty. When I go to a hotel or something, I get excited about getting to watch cable but then I just find myself watching network shows anyway.

Not that this is what we're talking about, but something about this thread reminded me of how people who don't have a TV love casually mentioning in conversation that they don't have TV. But then they watch a ton of shows on the internet.
  • We haven't had cable in probably 7 or 8 years. We've got Netflix and Prime and we aren't really sports fans, so it works well for us. We also have an antenna but it's not very good. Dh keeps talking about getting a better one, but I'm not sure I see a point. Between Netflix and Prime, there are more shows than we could watch in a lifetime.

DH streams ESPN somehow. He's been streaming a lot of baseball since we cancelled our cable.

  • Until I was on maternity leave, we hadn't had cable in 4 years. If we wanted to watch football, we'd go to a bar. Football and hockey are important in our house, so we did get cable after DS since it was 1. Winter in New England, 2. I would be home all day (hello HGTV), 3. Football and hockey season and it being frowned upon to bring a baby to a bar for HOURS on Saturday and Sunday (football) and throughout the week (hockey).

We are eagerly awaiting the end of 2 years to cancel cable again!

They're probably just glad about all the money they're not sending to Comcast :)
Ha -- yeah, but I don't have cable and I have a TV! Comcast gets none of my cash money either!

We have Netflix and have the HD antenna for local stations as others mentioned. We have Prime but I've never checked out their streaming. DH made a computer and hooked it up to the TV for streaming. If we ever want to watch any (recent) shows, we download them from... somewhere. The bowels of the internet. We maybe turn the TV on once a week, maybe. Oh and we don't really watch sports. DH occasionally likes to watch the Red Sox, so that is about all he misses.
This is amazing and we need to do this immediately.

  • Am I the only one confused by the title?

i think it's "the end of cable". i read it as that before i realized it didn't say that.

  • If you watch as much sports as we do, I don't know how you don't have cable. I think DH and I would die.

  • Totally didn't realize that about the title, whoops. My newbieness is showing!
  • Oh yeah DH hooked up a computer to our tv too.. It's just always plugged in and I forget it's there.. It's the only way we watch tv
  • We have DirecTV. I would LIT-rally die without cable.

  • We have never had cable. We have netflix and prime and a roku box. I do wish we could get basic channels though. Fox usually works and pbs. Abc is super spotty and no cbs or nbc.

  • We have Netflix, Hulu, and amazon prime....which together has more shows than we could ever watch, BUT the football thing is a big deal, so we have my parent's direct tv login so we can access the ESPN app on the apple tv and watch all the games that way. Before we did that we would always go somewhere else for the important games.
