Breastfeeding strike. Any experience?

Hello everyone! Hope all is well. Our summer had been so fun, and busy, and crazy, and now im getting a classroom ready the first time with baby is tough!! Anyway, I need some advice and pick me ups. I'm having a super rough day, LO (7 months) is either sick or teething (or both- I have a cold so were thinking it's that but I also see swollen gums on top) he's extremely congested. Since yesterday He won't nurse. He looks eager, latches on, sucks a few times, and latches off screaming. I'm guessing this is a nursing strike. Think it's due to teething or being on pain? Anyone have similar experience? If you have, what can I do now and did your babies go back to nursing? I made it this far and I really don't want to be done now as we made it through so much at the beginning and worked so hard to get here. any advice would help!!

  • DS2 went through a nursing strike.  It was hard and confusing.  I remember just pushing through it.  I think I did offer a little formula here and there, and I bulked up the solids I was offering, but he did go back to nursing after a week or so.

I'd say push through for a week or two and then reevaluate.  Good job making it so far!

  • Thank you for your reply! I'm glad to hear that you made it through and continued to nurse. I have a pretty big supply and I'll also pump but it's so frustrating. Luckily were at the solid point so I'll do that as well. Thanks again :)

  • We went through this at one point also. I was SO frustrated and almost gave up BF'ing. If you can- try and hang in there- it usually does pass. I did give LO a pumped bottle here or there just to make sure he was getting some food. Otherwise, we had luck nursing in motion (I would nurse him as I walked and sang to him). I know it sounds weird- I was hesitant to try it but it really helped. Not sure if your LO is too congested for this but it may soothe him enough to keep him going longer than just a few seconds. Hang in there mama- you are doing great!
  • I went through a random nursing strike with DS1 that lasted about 5 days. Then it was like a light switch turned on and he was back to normal. DS1 also refused to nurse when he had an ear infection so just watch for any ear pulling or fevers. I hope this passes quickly for you!

Have you tried ibuprofen to take away some of the pain/inflammation of his gums?

ETA: ibuprofen also helps with congestion....helps with the inflammation in the sinuses too.

We've only done Tylenol! At what age can you start ibuprofen? Tylenol doesn't seem to be touching it. Poor thing :(

  • Been there, it's not easy!! But hang in there! LO went in strike around 4 months maybe a little earlier, and refused to nurse. If I pumped, he would take a bottle and it was so frustrating! My LC told me it could be due to the weather- babies don't adjust to climate change as easily as we do, but not so much that as it is feeling hot and sticky and not wanting extra body heat while nursing. We pushed through it but not without difficulty. Lasted about a week it two.
  • Also, we were only able to nurse when he was sleepy.
  • @Nikkijo1022‌ How'd your day go? Any progress?

  • Thank you so much for the tips!!! Nursing while sleepy has been working! He nurses well in the middle of the night! He nursed twice today better than he has the last few days. We started a warm mist humidifier. I found this plug in in the baby aisle that says it's for congestion, smells kind of like Vicks when plugged in. (Didn't want to use Vicks on his skin as he has pretty bad eczema)
IVe been using saline and the nose Frida. I can't get much out it's all stuck in his head. I think I'll try a warm shower with him tomorrow night instead of his bath. Then try the Frida. Thank god for that btw.
I was worried today this is the start of him wanting to wean but I'm hoping as his cold goes away and he can breath better he starts nursing again.
