Northern pregnancy....maternity winter coat?

My EDD is April 1st, and I live in Michigan so I am going to be in my last trimester during the worst months of winter. Any moms out there have experience with this? Wondering if I should buy a maternity winter coat, or just a regular one but maybe a size bigger?

Re: Northern pregnancy....maternity winter coat?

  • I'm in NY. Not sure what I will do. I don't normally wear a winter coat unless it gets down to single digits. I was pg in the summer last time so this is new.

  • I live in Pennsylvania and our winters can be long, snowy and cold. I'm planning on buying a maternity winter coat. There is no way a regular coat would have fit me in the third tri with my DS (it was summer so I didn't need one). I'd rather be cozy and comfortable not trying to squeeze myself into a regular coat.

  • I'm wondering the same thing - with my last pregnancy I was biggest during warm months (DD born in October) and I didn't need a coat at all. I'm thinking of getting one this time around as Boston gets quite chilly in the winter!

  • I don't spend more time than I have to outside. I just leave mine open and run from my car to the building. I'm too cheap to buy maternity coat.
  • My 1st was due March 25th. I could zip up my coat until sometime in January. Seeing as there is a lot of growing that happens in the 3rd tri I don't think one size up would have been enough to get me through. I did sort of carry straight out with him which would make a difference. I bought an old navy maternity coat that was great, but looked sort of like a hefty bag. For better or worse they don't seem to have it right now!

  • I also live somewhere that gets brutally cold winters. My favorite coat is pretty stretchy and does ok to about -20. I found it on sale and got it in a size larger last week. I just couldn't bring myself to spend the money on a maternity coat where the one in a size up I could still wear if I needed a lot of under layers. I am a first time mom though and a bigger coat might not be the way to go. I'm interested in other replies too :-)

very interested in this as well, I take transit to and from work everyday so I will be outdoors a lot-was wondering this and I see some big box stores are starting to bring out last years jackets and put them on sale

I am outdoors a lot during my commute too so leaving my coat unzipped isn't an option! I've also seen some good deals on coats right now so I'm getting anxious to purchase one. Plus you never know when winter is going to start around here!

  • We're already starting to get cold and I was avoiding this as much as could so I could continue in denial. I won't have a choice but to buy one since we get snow starting October and it doesn't stop till April at the earliest. -30 doesn't leave room for having an open coat while running to the car.

Thinking a maternity coat will last the longest for me.

  • I'm in Michigan too and wondering the same thing. Especially since we had such a horrible winter last year and it's apparently supposed to be just as bad this year. I found a couple on Zulily but they're 100 bucks. :-/ Not sure if I can justify that just yet.
  • There are companies that make inserts that zip into a regular coat! Also something to consider, if you plan to baby wear at all in the winter months, maybe look for a multi purpose coat if you are going to spend the money anyway they make ones that can work for both!
  • Personally, I am getting a maternity coat. I had one from last pregnancy, but I bought it too small and it diesnt fit anymore.

I agree with PP about a regular coat in a larger size looking sloppy.

Zulilly had maternity coats at 50% off original price right now and they've got a good variety. I'll probably go to Old Navy again, though. Not warm enough for the supercold climates, ie, Boston or Michigan, but they're well-priced. And I live in Richmond, VA, so it never gets below 10 degrees.

If you live somewhere it's cold from November - April, you'll want one. I used to live in the Boston area, so I'm familiar with those winters.
  • I have seriously been trying to figure out what I'm going to do about a winter coat also. The last time I was preggo I bought one just one size up and it worked fine. This time my starting weight is more than before and I'm actually eating already (which usually I lose weight before I gain in pregnancies) so I've been thinking that i may have to invest in a maternity coat. I'm not trying to spend a lot though so I'm gonna try look around a lot first.
  • https://www.kokoala.ca/index.php/extensions.html here's one brand of insert that can be tightened in different places to accommodate either belly or outside baby. I've seen them on etsy too!
  • I'm ins michigan too and since we had multiple days that were -40, and this winter is predicted to be the same... I was planning on buying one that could work for the whole winter.

  • My last two pregnancies I wore an extra coat of my husbands. This time I bought a wool coat from pinkblushmaternity.

  • I live in Canada, and my 1st was due at the end of March. I did get a maternity coat, but mostly used my regular winter coat. If I were you, I'd wait until it got closer to see when you will "pop". Some of my coats were too tight, but my big poof one was fine until the end.

  • I'm planning on wearing my regular coat and just not zipping it. I can put on a scarf that can hang over my belly if need be. When you're that pregnant the baby is basically a little heater anyway, IMO

  • I was due in January last time and didn't think I needed a mat coat because I live in NC. Well, I was awfully cold when I grew out of my coat and really regretted not getting one. I think I will spring for one this time just in case.
  • Im gonna need one I live in Minnesota. So it gets pretty cold.
  • I got through my first pregnancy without one. I didn't get huge until about the last 4 weeks so I did just fine. I'm going to hold off this time (I also live in mi) and see how I do, I can always get one later and it will prob be on sale later in the winter.

  • Just buy one.  You'll be happy you did.  We will be pregnant the entire fall and winter.  I had my first in February and loved the down coat I got from Pea in the Pod.  I also had a wool coat that I just bought a few sizes bigger.  Both were great investments.

  • I'm a teacher... With recess duty... In Manitoba... Who was due in January. So, needless to say, a winter maternity jacket was not optional. I ended up scoring a really good deal off Kijiji (like Craig's list). If you spend any amount of time outside, I'd say get one!

  • I have been thinking about getting some good winter boots that slip on ( I fell 3 times last winter in my uggs) but I haven't even thought about a maternity coat! Teacher in Massachusetts, I will definitely be making that purchase too!
  • I found this cute one on Pinterest and I will check Zara as well as they have affordable on trend coats. The whole menswear trend is in our favor. I know helmut lang and Vince do as well but are more pricey.
  • I didn't get one my first pregnancy (also due in April).  I was able to use an old coat that was a size larger.  I'm taller(ish) and didn't have a huge bump out front.

I would wait and see, but I don't want to spend money on things this time that I don't absolutely need.

  • I borrowed a coat from my mom that was a size larger. I plan to ask again for this baby as the due date is 2 weeks earlier than my 2012 baby.

  • Luckily I have a Columbia coat that's way too big on me. Otherwise I can layer some of my husband's hunting clothes, they're so warm. I always steal his fleece sweatshirts. I definitely don't want to buy a coat that I'll probably only wear for one season.
  • Hatch maternity has the most stunning coats on sale now! It's wayyy pricey but totally worth it I wear all my hatch pieces regularly!
  • I got one of these extenders for my last pregnancy. I was due in February in Chicago so I definitely needed to be able to wear a winter coat. https://makemybellyfit.com

  • I live in NY this will be my second winter pregnancy, I bought a cute coat that was button down and it had elastic right below my boobs lol. From the boobs down it went A line. I got it at Sears on sale for $45 :) it's not maternity so I got lucky. Also by April I'll probably be wearing sweat shirts anyway lol
  • I live in Saskatchewan, prairie winters of -50C = taking any measure to be warm. With my other 2, I was in Alberta where we had mild winters and chinooks that came in so I got away with having a thick wool jacket that I could keep open a bit. Saskatchewan isn't that lucky, unfortunately. Maternity jacket all the way!
  • I live in the snow belt of Ohio. Thanks for asking this question, I didn't know they made maternity winter coats. It's good to know-and I probably would not have thought of asking this until I couldn't zip up my coat. Lol
  • I just realized I'm in the same boat. We live in Maine, (my screen name) and I'm thinking of just wearing my regular coats but using one on my will shawls like a scarf so the ends are super long and wide to close the gap.
  • Last time I delivered the end if January and I just used my husbands coat in the third tri. He's a men's large.
  • Last time around I got a maternity coat from Old Navy. It was pretty cheap and comfortable and it lasted me the whole winter.

That is the one I had from last time. I am sure they will have something similar again this year.

  • I'm having trouble finding anything plus sized maternity in Canada. I'm thinking of getting a poncho.
  • I'm short and already a size L or XL (on the heavy side), so I didn't want to get a plus size coat with room to grow in the tummy. I ordered a maternity coat on amazon from Momo maternity, it wasn't that expensive and it's really thick and comfy and elastic-y!! Since my other coats are probably going to be tight by the time it's cold enough to wear them, I will probably just wear this maternity one and grow into it!
