OMG. I just meant women shouldn't feel like they HAVE to use a bf room just like they don't have to use a cover. Tis all.

Unfortunately until recently breastfeeding mothers had few legal rights in Michigan. We were on of five states (I think) that had no protection beyond not being charged with public nudity.
I agree that women shouldn't feel like they have to a nursing room. Nursing rooms seem to be the norm for many women here though. I would think the lack of protection and the desire for privacy by some mothers contribute to that.
In the last few years the news has done a few pieces on women being booted from public places for breastfeeding. I'll admit that until the new law was passed that I did not feel comfortable openly nursing. I still don't sometimes due to the lack of knowledge of the law.
As someone who lives in the metro Detroit area, most of our malls have bathrooms with nice separate sitting areas with comfy chairs for moms to nurse. So, pointing a mom to the nearest restroom isn't "ignorant" or "offensive" (even if this particular employee was being rude).
This is a good point - i'm in the boston area, and all of our malls have a totally separate space from the toilets that have couches etc for nursing. Maybe this is similar to the bathroom that she was referring to?
This is a photo of the bathroom at the mall that I go to:
Only on page two, but yes, some larger department stores have a separate room next to the bathroom for nursing mothers. I use the one at Nordstrom all the time when shopping. It's pretty nice.
I go out of my way to use the Nordstrom bathroom. And I don't nurse. I like to pee in elegance.
Newb mom to be here (who plans on trying to BF) and I am feeling a little ignorant here...
I just want to make sure - If she had been NIPing on a chair or something, then the manager could not have asked her to leave, but the manager also does not have to give her access to use a dressing room to BF in private.
So, in reality, the manager could have refused to open the dressing room and then OP could have decided to sit in a chair or something inside the store and just NIPed.
I am not judging or side-eyeing or anything - I just literally do not know what my rights will be when it comes down to this issue...can someone clarify for me pleeease
