Constipation ....

I stopped taking the iron pills and still take the stool softeners and I'm still having the worst constipation ever. Anything work/help with you ladies!? It's so bad. I had to use my first enima ....

Re: Constipation ....

  • I've had this issue a lot in both pregnant and non-pregnant life since I've had to take iron quite a bit. Start drinking a glass of Metamucil every day and slowly increase until you get up to two or three glasses a day. It can be just as uncomfortable to start consuming tons more fiber suddenly, trust me on that one. Someone said apples and they do seem to help as well. Really any foods high in fiber.
If you haven't had issues with heartburn you can also try squeezing a lemon or lemon juice in a glass of warm water. Sometimes I put a little honey in it to make it more drinkable.
I've had pretty good luck with these in the past, but if all else fails bust out the big guns. Prune Juice. Bleggch.

  • Personally, apple juice works. Not just with me but for my daughters too. I eat tons of fiber one bars so those help. I can only imagine how uncomfortable you are:( hope you find relief soon!
  • Constipation is the worst. I've had it bad since the beginning. Its getting slightly better. I think I can go every 2 days now.

Apples are good. Fibrous vegetables like broccoli can also help. Chase it all with a lot of water. Fiber wrapped up in water = poop.

When all else fails...cigarettes and coffee??

  • My doctor told me that she would rather me not use any type of medicine to regulate myself. She said to eats tons & tons of "skinned fruits" & to also eat lots of vegetables. She also recommended to make sure to eat some type of whole grain cereal for breakfast. I had asked about a daily stool softener because I was going days without bowel movements, but that is the advice she had given me. It has helped a lot too. Oh, & she also said not to be eating bananas for a bit until I become more regulated.
  • Prune juice saved my life. I wake up, mix it with a little water and chug. A glass a day turned my once a week poop into a more normal, pleasant, recurring experience.
  • Three words: Warm prune juice!

  • Water & prunes daily! I have it too. Seems to be getting slightly better now at almost 11 weeks.
  • since Ive had such bad ms the past 6 weeks, I asked my doctor about having a protein drink in the morning because ive had such a hard time with food. I can get the drink down and keeps me full for most of the morning.

Ive been drinking the special K breakfast protein drinks. since I have started them, I have been very regular. ;)

  • Prune juice. Also Metamucil in smoothies so you can't taste it! I was super constipated in my second pregnancy and that was the only thing that helped.
