Like I said, so be it. I guess I never had a problem with my dog barking all night (no one has ever complained). I know it can be annoying, but I wouldn't call the cops nor would I bring him inside. There is more to worry about in this world than a dog barking.
Ugh this response makes me cringe. I'm a dog person, I have 2 of my own and my entire company is based on dog care. To not acknowledge that your dog barking is annoying to others is one thing, but to refuse to bring him inside if/when he does it is a whole different level. It's just completely disregarding the comfort and feelings of everyone around you. It's incredibly self- centered. My neighbors have 2 dogs that they let out at 4am every single morning and they HOWL. Trust me, when you're woken up in a panic because it sounds like someone is being murdered, there is NOTHING else "more important" to worry about. And if your dog is a barker there's something more to the story. They bark when they're bored or not exercised enough or need attention. Leaving a barking dog outside is NOT ok. Ever.
I am going to take a guess her dog never gets walked either.

  • Completely off subject of all the dog posts, but I just received the most random email at work. We send samples out to reviewers and one of our reviewers found out that I'm pregnant.
I guess he thought he was the last to know or something because he just sent me a congratulatory email asking when the baby had been born. The amusing part is I just saw him about 2 months ago and obviously didn't look pregnant. I know he doesn't have kids, but he has to know it takes 9 months.
I read his email and just like, "Yeah, I wish this kid was here already." (Not born at 14 weeks obviously, I just can't wait for Feb!)

No, @bhjones1980, my dogs get regular walks. He also has over 3 acres to safely run around all day with my aunt's dogs. He also is has fresh, clean water and gets fed regularly as well. Would you like to see his last vet visit to make sure he got his shots and heart worm prevention medication?

I'm scratching my head at you. Just because I have never had a problem with my dog barking all night and do not bring him in makes it ok for you to assume I don't care for my pets or that I'm irresponsible? Did you read any of the other comments? :-?

That wasn't referring to you, it was meant for the OP.  The comment on her leaving them outside at night since they work all day hinted at a bored dog who probably doesn't get any outside socialization or exercise.

  • It is not at all my intention to WK this, but @psychobutthead is just like the rest of us and does what she thinks is best for her dog and does her best to raise and care for her dog just like we will all do what we think is best in raising our kids.  The point is that a ton of shit is happening to one of our own right now and it REALLY sucks for her.

That being said, my dogs stay inside and are extremely fit.  I'm more upset at fat dogs than I am at outside dogs.  Fat dogs lead to dogs with health concerns.  Both situations can be controlled.

And yes, let's all be friends even if we don't agree.  :)

    LOL!  Hey, YOU did!
Just yesterday, I had to tell a very nice obese lady that her dog is obese.  THOSE are the hard ones.

I work at an animal hospital....don't think that I go around telling random strangers that their dog is fat.  Although I would.  I hate when dogs are fat :)

  • In keeping with the dog theme but on a lighter note:

I took my dog to a park yesterday, and was standing in the grass with him. There were like 4 other large dogs there and they were all sniffing and saying hello to each other. Mine and another were standing behind me doing sniff circles. when, all of a sudden, the other dog sniffed my leg, lifted his, and peed on me like I was a tree or something !!! It was disgusting. We were in the middle of a field of grass. I pushed him away but he totally still peed a good amount on me. It went all down my calf and onto my foot and shoe (luckily it was old navy flip-flops). WTF!? This dog was an adult and definitely old enough to know not to pee on people. It was the first time a dog has ever tried (and SUCCEEDED) in deliberately peeing on me.

So, despite the fact that the stream in the park has sewage overflow + no swimming signs all over it I totally washed my leg off in the toxic creek. Then again 2 more times when I got home. The offending shoe was left outside overnight.

He is actually putting on a few lbs, still thinner than most dogs i see but I am not happy with his weight right now.

He eats too much toddler food that gets given to him from the high chair.

You'd probably die if you saw how thin my dogs are.  But mine are athletes.  I don't expect your dog to be as thin as mine.  That'd be odd.  (this is my youngest - what nice ass muscles he has!)

Actually he looked similar when he was younger, competing in dock diving and swimming constantly in the summers.

He is getting older though (turns 8 in a few weeks), he is lazier, and I am going to let him be a little thicker in the middle...

  • Sometimes I think we should move somewhere warmer for our pit. He loves Wisconsin summers but is so miserable in the winter. He goes outside to go potty and right back to the door. He refuses to go for walks and always gains extra few pounds in the winter. My mom made hime a coat and we have tried the little booties but then he just prances and tries to get them off and wont go. FI mom has a big pole shed so a few times a week we go over there and let him run in there but I feel bad we cant do it every day.
  • Everyone is horrified of our dog who is a 60 pound pitbull. She's extremely loving and sweet especially around children. She only barks if the doorbell rings or if she's playing fetch. I've taken her to PetSmart and a lady ran out of the store screaming because she thought my leashed dog was going to kill her. My dog was too busy picking out her new toy to care. Ignorance is a hard thing to deal with especially since we are temporarily living in a state where she is illegal. *sigh*

NOT responsible Pit Bull owner behavior, I know you said temporarily, but ignoring BSL laws is not helping the breed image.   What would you do if you got "caught" and your dog was the one who had to pay the ultimate price?

Good, it sounds like you have look into the rules.

It is a huge pet peeve of mine people just disregarding BSL laws (getting Pits when they know they can not have them in their county/state/etc).  I live near a county in MD where they are strictly illegal and it breaks my heart to see the Craiglist posts over and over about "getting rid of my Pit since animal control said I have to".  So irresponsible.

  • BSL is such bullshit, but agreed it shouldn't be ignored.  I live in the ONLY county in GA where they are considered to be "dangerous", but aren't banned.  Believe me, my whippet mix and my golden retriever will take you out faster than my staffy mixes.  Luckily, #1 I live in the county so no registration is required and #2 they are simply considered mixes (correctly) at the vet (where I work), so there is no danger of being "found out".

@psychobutthead‌ - so your neighbors called the cops for no reason at all randomly at 4am? What in the? What did the cops say when they got there? Did they at least acknowledge the dog was quiet? That's the weirdest thing I've ever heard. Can't they get in trouble for abusing police resources?

Unless there WAS a dog in the vicinity that barked, and Neighbor With The Bug Up Their Ass immediately ASSumed it was @psychobutthead‌ 's. That's my educated guess. Neighbors fkn suck.

  • When I first read the op I automatically presumed the dog was inside because I don't get having a dog to put them outside. Not to mention the risks for your pets health and safety when left alone outside.

    * except working/ farm dogs. Many of them prefer to be with their 4 legged herd and I get that.
Love is like infinity: You can't have more or less infinity, and you can't compare two things to see if they're "equally infinite." Infinity just is, and that's the way I think love is, too.

  • @psychobutthead we had a neighbor from down the street come over one day when DH and I were heading back to work from lunch and tell us how our dogs barking at night were keeping her kids up.  She was like 4 or 5 houses down.  I told her our neighbors on either side had never complained so we didn't know it was an issue.  My pups USED to have a doggie door.  But then I thought about and looked at her and said, "Our dogs are closed in our room all night.  It would be pretty crazy if they barked loud enough to wake up YOUR kids, but not us.  I think you have the wrong dogs."  She said she was sure it was ours because she had heard them during the day at one of our neighbor's houses and it was the same barks.  I still think she was crazy and we've never heard from her again.  Maybe yours are crazy AND assholes!

@bhjones1980 we have an 85 lb Doberman/Boxer mix who is also terrified of small dogs!  She got out the front door on DH one day and he chased after her.  She ran up to a neighbor out with her Yorkie who barked at our girl, who then turned around and high tailed it to DH.  He picked her up and carried her home laughing.  We laugh about this every time we think about it...big ol' baby!

  • @mmariel‌ your dog sounds like me! I moved from a moderate climate to one with extremes (-40 Celsius happens in the winter) and every year I'm here I gain more weight because outside is intolerable! I used to be an avid runner (long distance) but now I can't keep it up and had to switch to indoor swimming!

  • I have a 70lb Pit Bull, I am hyper aware of keeping my dog on his best behavior with the neighbors and being an ambassador for his breed.
I wish my neighbors had this attitude. They don't have a gate on their fence and their pittie leaves their yard to come into ours and try to attack my chihuahua who (thankfully) is never outside without one of us. I spoke to them the first time it happened, but when the dog charged DH and Killer one night at 10pm (again, in OUR YARD), we called the police. In my town the only way to get animal control after hours is through the police. Our dog is very protective of me, especially now that I am pregnant.  I worry about him being hurt trying to defend his domain/mama.  I have nothing against the pit bull breed as a whole, I have known several that were big teddy bears.  I just wish more owners would be responsible like you are!!
that makes me really sad, those owners suck.

on a funny note, my neighbor I mentioned (we share a fence line) has 5 small dogs, a few of them are Chi's or mixed Chi's

the smallest one is constantly coming into our yard since it is small enough to squeeze through the fence, if I let my big bad Pit Bull out there when he is in our yard (if I don't notice) as SOON as my dog sees him he high tails it back to the deck to "hide", he is terrified of that 3 lb dog.

That's hilarious! My IL's 85 lb golden retriever is scared of my tiny dog too. Their llewellin setter (snootiest dog in the world) just pretends like he doesn't exist.

I used Afrin nose spray or Vicks vapor rub to breathe easier, but your doctor may not recommend them. Where's @psychobutthead‌ anyway? I think it's a little odd to post a thread about controversial drama and not come back. Why bother posting at all?

Team I'm calling someone if your dog is barking at 4am. How are you even surprised the cops were called? And why is your dog outside all night anyway? I guess I get it for farm dogs, but it doesn't sound like you live on a farm

  • My baby (1 year old cane Corso) was hit by a car and killed a couple of weeks ago. :( he was the sweetest dog ever, I'm really heartbroken and feel so guilty about it. What do you all do with your dogs while you are at work? Do you crate them all day long, leave them outside, leave them in the house, or have a doggy door and fence? We have a chain link fence, and we also had a shock collar so we thought it would be impossible for him to escape. We normally left him in the crate when we leave for work around 8am, then my mom comes over and let's him out at 12 when she gets off work, then my husband gets home around 2-3 and let's him back in. Was I an irresponsible owner because we left him for 2-3 hours? I thought I was a good owner because we had him fixed, microchipped, had food, water, and shelter outside for him, and walked him almost daily. But I can't stop thinking that I failed as a doggy parent and I'll be a terrible mom.
HUGS!  that is horrible, my heart breaks for you.

Don't beat yourself up, accidents happen.

Jumping in for the day, here. I don't think you were irresponsible. I could never leave my dogs outside for 2-3 hours, but that's because I live in Texas where it gets ridiculously hot. You took all the precautions necessary, but accidents can still happen. It would be one thing if he repeatedly got out and you know about it, but it doesn't sound like that was the case. Don't beat yourself up about it.  :-<

I'm so sorry to hear this. Try not to beat yourself up over it. My 7 year old miniature pinscher was hit by a car and killed October of last year. I let her out to go potty, unleashed in our yard. She got out and before I could find her, it was already too late. I feel this guilt every day of my life and feel that there was SO MUCH I could have done different. I should have leashed her, although she was in the yard. But our routine was the same for 7 years, unleashed. Tragedy happens and there's always going to be the guilt. I'm so sorry to hear this and I share your pain. It's like losing a family member and is one of the worst pains I have ever felt, in my ENTIRE LIFE. You aren't a bad mommy. But you are also not in alone in feeling that way. I wish there was more I could say.

    RIP to your sweet baby.
