What will your newborn be sleeping in?

With my first she was in the higher part of a pack n play, but I'm thinking I might like a rock n play better because it's inclined, but not sure if it's meant for all night sleeping? Save $$ or is a rock n play worth it?

  • See, now I'm nervous about using a RNP according to what someone posted in the FB Group. A friend had purchased one for us because she swears by it and now I'm super nervous that it's a bad thing to let a baby sleep in overnight/extended periods of time.  :(

  • I know a number of moms who loved the rock n play. Their babies slept there all night, I'm pretty sure.

We intend to bedshare, but a friend is loaning us a bassinet to have on hand just in case this LO prefers his own space. DS was a snuggle bug, but some babies are not bedsharing fans, and I'd rather have something in the house for him to sleep in just in case. ;)

I'm not on Facebook -- what did they say that makes you nervous??

  • @Emerald27‌ what are you using for bed sharing??

Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • My first baby slept in his swing most of the time. I was hoping to get a rock n play this time, but I'm not going to spend the money on it myself. We will just use the crib or swing if no one gets us a rock n play.
  • Either the crib, the PNP or the RNP. From what everyone says here and what my friends and family say, pretty much wherever he will actually sleep.

Same as we did with DS: He'll just be in our bed, on my side on the outside (not between me and DH). We'll keep the blankets at about waist height. When he learns to roll over and sit up/crawl, we'll either put on a bedrail on the bed, a pool noodle under the fitted sheet, or we'll take apart the bedframe and put the mattress directly on the floor (this depends on his personality and how independent and adventurous he is) for a while.

Some bedsharing parents like to use a sidecarred crib with the mattress at the level of their bed to extend the sleeping surface and make a safe place to scoot baby when mom and dad want the whole bed to themselves. Like this:

If it turns out that this LO prefers sleeping in his own space, we'll buy a crib and do this.

  • Either RNP or PNP depending on what the baby prefers.

  • The only negative thing I have heard about the RnP is that it can be really difficult to transition the baby into their crib of they have gotten used to sleeping in the RnP. We will probably do with this one what we did with our first - have her in a bassinet next to our bed and with me in the bed sometimes.

  • My mom bought us a basinet - so if baby will sleep in it that is where he/she will go - but my best friend also gave me a rock-n-play barely used - so imagine we'll be using that during the day downstairs. Really - from what I hear wherever the baby will sleep should work.

  • We use the snuggle nest supreme in our bed and then transition it to the bassinet.

  • I have a co-sleeper, with a mattress that lines up with the mattress on my bed, but I also plan to bedshare. I have a RNP too but I really only plan on using it when we travel.

  • We're using the Arm's Reach Mini Convertible Co-sleeper. It anchors to the bed. We even bought the canopy to keep the cats out! :) It comes with a little mobile even.image

  • @Emerald27 & @MollyC20 They said that the Nicu nurses had a very long, in-depth conversation with her about the dangers of the RNP and that it's not recommended by the APA for night sleeping. Some of the other commenters cited torticollis, SIDS (which, of course, scares the bejeesus out of me), possible asphyxiation (even though the one we have has mesh sides), and the incline being hard on their breathing. Less people seemed to come to the defense of the RNP, so I just got all nervous. :(

  • This is TBD for us. DD hated laying flat on her back, so she slept in her swing the first 3 months and then we transitioned her to the crib. This LO will have options galore; the crib, pnp, swing, and we plan on getting a rock n play.

  • Plan on using a bassinet for upstairs and the newborn napper part of the PnP for downstairs.

  • My DD slept countless hours in a RNP with no issues. We will be doing the same (depending on if she likes it or not) this time around as well.

  • We have a cradle that DH's grandpa made so LO will likely sleep in that in our room for the first 6 weeks or so then eventually transfer to the crib in the nursery.

I have a RNP and loved it for travel and naps, I never had DD sleep in it but only because we got it later (specifically for travel).

Our cats love DS and are great with him (even when he's not so gentle with them) but when we brought him home, they were 100% offended and ignored us for at least 2 months. We couldn't even convince them to come into the bedroom anymore, much less come sit on our laps for snuggles.

I was worried about them trying to snuggle him or sleep near him, but this was definitely not an issue. Some cats do love babies, but ours wanted nothing to do with him. So you'll just have to see how your furry ones react!

I think Pete will be terrified and Todd will be like WTF is this thing?! They'll probably hang out in the basement. :( I'll miss my Pete snuggles at night.

I expect my prissy girls to be quite offended and to stay away for awhile but I have one very adaptable boy and he's the one I worry about. He climbed into the carseat with my cousin's baby when they came over back in April, so I'm anticipating some snuggles from him.

  • In theory, LO will go right to the crib. DS would only sleep well if in a bouncer or co-sleep for the first three months. Then he stayed in the PNP in our room until he was 9mo because the nursery was on a different floor next MILs room (and I didn't trust her to leave the boy alone).
  • Baby will start out in an Arm's Reach co-sleeper beside our bed until such time as he/she starts to sit up or crawl, then we'll have to transition to something else. Not sure what yet. I probably won't move baby to his/her own room until 8+ months.
  • We are getting a co-sleeper to put next to our bed where she will sleep to help with breastfeeding.

I may also have her take some naps in her crib so that she gets used to her room.

  • Pnp with the raised bassinet part. I am too afraid the dogs would lick him all night if he was in a rnp. I am worried about our cats this time. We got them when ds was about 6 months old and he was big enough to push them away but they loved cuddling with him. They still try but I won't let them in his room. I may put tape around the edges so they don't jump in.
  • Hopefully bassinet by the bed for the first couple months, then transition her into the nursery.

This is exactly how my son was. Swing for a few months then crib. The swing was a miracle item. Sometimes he'd sleep in the bouncer. He had reflux issues so the incline was great.

  • We ended up using the RnP with both our boys.  We started out with the Arm's Reach Co-sleeper, but neither boy would sleep laying flat.  Out of desperation for sleep, we put them in the RnP and they slept beautifully.  It's still small enough that it fits beside the bed and is convenient for night time nursing.  The only concern that's ever been mentioned is the possibility for a flat head.  BUT that's only if they are spending all their time in it!  The same can be said for the swing, carseat, or any other surface that the baby spends a lot of time on.

With #3, we will try the co-sleeper again, but I anticipate going to the RnP.  Neither of my boys had a problem transitioning from the RnP to the crib.  DS#1 was around 10 weeks, DS#2 was about 8 weeks when we transitioned.

  • We'll start with a cradle in our room at night and crib in his room for naps.  After a few weeks, we'll move him fully to the crib.  Otherwise we have the pnp or swing if we get desperate.

  • Im not starting my baby out in a Rock N Play simply because I dont want them to get used to sleeping on an incline and then later have to teach them to sleep flat on their back.

We dont have much room so baby will be sleeping in our room in a bassinet I bought at Target. Its actually a travel bassinet but that makes it even better because it folds up flat when not in use. Plus it was only $50.
  • We will bedshare safely with our baby. Have done this with every one of my kids. I get fantastic sleep and so does daddy- we have a sidecarred crib on our bed for when baby needs more space or we need some space later on.

  • I'll fully admit that this baby will be sleeping in a laundry basket with a bassinet pad at night for the first several weeks.  Crib in the day time.  It's my last, and I am not buying a bassinet since they out grow them so fast.  But I'm a weirdy like that lol.

  • We are using the Arms Reach CoSleeper but also have a rock n play and will have a pack in play and a swing. So whatever works.

  • I was going to use the bassinet on the top of our Pack N Play, but it doesn't fit in our room well. And our pediatrician recommended not using the Rock N Play as a bed... she said she recommends a flat mattress.

So we got the Halo Bassinest. It's pricey but I can see how it will be super convenient for late night feedings.
    image
  • Whatever works for us: we have a bassinet, a RnP based on the feedback in our BMB, and I also have the PnP with the infant insert. I will try my best to have her do her daytime naps in her crib so she gets used to her room. But if we are all downstairs she can nap in the PnP which will reside in the family room. Ideally I would like to transition her to her crib before I go back to work.

This is our plan too. We're keeping our options open as this is our first and we don't know what to expect. It seems as though each of our nieces/nephews preferred something different!

  • Our hospital highly advised against bed share due to the suffocation risk. They said bed share deaths are considered SIDS. Up to each mommy to make their own decision on this.. That's just my two cents.
