Juliet Elizabeth was born 3 days before her due date at 1:01 am on August 18th! She was 8 lb 4 oz, 20.5 inches long, started nursing like a champ, and has a full head of crazy, funny, dark hair.
Details: I started having contractions early last Saturday morning, 5 days before our EDD of August 21. They fizzled out then came back in the afternoon and didn't stop. They picked up to 5 minutes apart very early Sunday morning. After talking to the on-call OB, I decided to wait at home until they were 4 minutes apart and tried to sleep (not very successfully), and the contractions slowed down. By Sunday afternoon, I'd been laboring at home for a good 24 hours, talked to my midwife, and decided to head to the hospital to get checked. My contractions throughout labor never really matched up with the "normal” patterns, but they were 6-7 minutes apart when I sat/rested and 3-4 minutes apart when I walked or moved around and had been getting consistently stronger. When we got to L&D, we found out I was 5 cm dilated and our LO was posterior. We walked around the halls, a within about an hour and a half my midwife had arrived, said I was at 8 or 8-1/2 cm, and broke my water. It was several more hours until I started pushing, and then I pushed for about 90 minutes before Juliet was born. I was really fading towards the end, but I didn't have much of a choice!
I got the med-free birth I'd hoped for with no major complications and two very small tears (no stitches). Apparently we also had a very large, healthy placenta. They did give me pitocin after the delivery because I was bleeding more than they liked, and I had some issues with dizziness whenever I got out of bed during the first 12 hours or so after her birth, but overall everything went well! We're just learning our new routine at home and enjoying this sweet baby. I feel very blessed and grateful to have this little one in my arms.
