Drink to test Pregnancy diabetes?

So what do you ladies think about drinking that sugary drink to test if you have diabetes or not? How many refused to take it ?

  • If you are worried, I'd talk to your doctor about it.  I was given the choice (based on my low risk factors) if I wanted to take it or not.  That being said, I took the test and didn't find the drink that bad.  I like sugary things though!

  • It was awful last time (room temp orange drink)and I was given the option to opt out this time but am going to do it. We were given an option on flavor - fruit punch, orange or lemon-lime. I went dye free with lemon lime and it is waiting in my fridge for our appt next month.

  • I refused the drink, but I'm going the test a different way. There are options! I am going in first thing in the morning and getting my blood drawn, then eating breakfast, and going back 2 hours later for another blood test. If you don't want the drink, talk to your OB/midwife and see what alternatives they have.
  • I go for my test inan hour. The drink doesn't bother me in the slightest. Chug it and it's over. I really don't get all the hype. And as pp's have said GD is no joke so I would never skip it.

  • I had the fruit punch, which was in my fridge for a month before testing. Wasn't bad at all.

  • It's yucky, but you suck it up and take it...I should know, I've done the 50g 3times and the 100 g once.
  • The 50g 1 hour test isn't bad. It's the two or three hour tests that can make you feel/get sick. The later requires fasting so all that sugar on an empty stomach can be challenging for some women. As a pp said, you may have options but if you have any risk factors, don't skip the test.

Are you planning to refuse it? Or are you just looking to get our thoughts?

By the way it looks like you are new...Welcome and congrats!

    Test
  • I had the orange it was ice cold and Delish! Taste just like orange Gatorade!
  • Just got my orange flavored Glucola drink yesterday to keep in my fridge... will be taking it at my 28 wk appointment. Call me weird but I don't mind the drink.
  • Forgot to post my response...don't want to be accused if being unhelpful or a meanie. If my doctor says it is medically necessary and I have no known other medical conditions that would suggest that I not do it...you bet I am going to do the test. Haven't had the super sugary drink but I am sure a couple of those aren't as bad as the jug of solution that is required for colonoscopy.

Ugh- I was eating breakfast when I read your bit about the colonoscopy prep :-&  That shit haunts my dreams.

  • FTM here. I wasn't really given an,option, but I also do not want to refuse it. As PPs have said, GD is no joke! And very few signs with very big risks to you and your baby. I would risk a nasty sugary drink that might put me in a funk for a couple hours to know that I and my baby are safe.

That being said, I am not looking forward to drinking it! !! It has been in my fridge since I got. Advice has been it's better when it's cold. Still have about 2 weeks until my appointment

    Good luck to you!

Skipping the 1hr and going straight to the 3hr.

As gross as the drink is and how horrible it made me feel the other times I have taken both the 1hr and 3hr with my other two, there isn't even a remote chance that I would try to get out of it. My mom had GD with my baby sister and I saw all the complications that it can cause. Definitely not worth it.

  • I hate the drink but I do it anyway.
  • Mine is in 3 weeks and he gave me the least sweet one (per my request) which is the lemon-lime. I do get to drink it cold, room temperature would have been pointless because no matter what would've come back up.
I am so low risk I'm pissed he is making me take the test. I have fought low blood sugar all my life, I'm very thin, no history of diabetes in the family, and eat very healthy.
I wanted to check my sugars for a week instead, but FTM he said I have to take the test. I can flat out refuse it, but I really like this doctor and would prefer to stay in his good graces.

  • There are other ways of testing if you truly don't like the idea of the drink. Talk with your doctor/midwife and see what they have to say.

    @SerenityAE‌

Exactly. GD doesn't discriminate. With my first I was pregnant at the same time with this chic that participated in bikini competitions. She had no family history of diabetes, didn't have it with her first, was super thin, ate super clean and healthy, and was very active during her whole pregnancy. She ended up with GD with her second pregnancy... Then like 5 months after her pregnancy went out and placed top 5 in a bikini competition. I hated her LOL!

@MaineMama - Oh yeah... it still haunts me.  One of the worst parts was feeling exhausted (won't state why in case other people are eating breakfast) and looking over at the jug only to see that you still have 1/4 of the jug left to drink.

Its disgusting and I hate it, but it would be stupid to refuse. Stupid and irresponsible. Gestational Diabetes has few symptoms, and can affect anyone, no matter your history, eating habits, body type, or eye color.

    Drink up.

    Yep.

  • I don't know whether you mean refuse the test entirely or to eat a regular meal instead of the sugary beverage. From what I have read eating a regular meal is a more accurate measure of your bodies ability to manage your blood sugar, but the drink is a "standard" that allows your doctor to assess your blood sugar in an unbiased way.

The absolute best method is, if you have a blood sugar monitor to test your self in the morning after fasting and after meals. You would need to do this over the course of a month, and to be safe do it throughout your third trimester. However, you need to be doing this under doctor supervision so they can advise you on diet, etc.

This is what I have turned up in my research and in my discussions with my OB.

You do have options but not testing or following through with any of these methods is very dangerous for your baby.

  • I just took the 3hr last week and came back abnormal. :( so no I would not skip the test!! Good luck!
  • @sysakbaby‌ I say the hell with all that I'd much rather drink a sugary drink and get my blood drawn than prick my finger four times a day for a month. 1-finger sticks are more painful IMO. 2-Much rather have a quick answer.

  • I am debating refusing it. I may just deal with the 1 hour and if I fail, then go to other options (will speak of below) in place of the 3 hour. Here is why: Those drinks do a number on my system. It took 3 times for the Dr. to actually take it seriously and admit it is prob the drink. I get shaky for over a day, headache, and my stomach revolts and I have intestine issues. It really causes issues for a day or 2 on my system. No BS.

I have 5 kids 10 months -7 years in age.  My 7 year old is autistic. My SO has Cerebral Palsy. It effects his legs and one arm (yes, he supports our family. Disability doesn't mean inability). I need to be functional. Yes, I am functional coming home after a Csection.

With #4 they did the glucose test in office (I never had it in office before) and they saw what it did to me. SO freaked out and we even came back the next day. Funny thing, my test was lost some how. They remember taking it, but it never made it to the lab. So they did an A1C test? I think that was the name. It was just a blood draw. I also know they can have you monitor your blood sugar for a week. I am willing to do this. Even if we were to go to a diabetic diet, the only thing that would change is "Pasta night" at my house. We eat a pretty diabetic diet anyway. :-) I had a ex boyfriend who had diabetes and I got use to cooking that way. I am a creature of habit. So over the last 10+ years not much has changed... outside of homemaking it more and not using highly processed boxed items.

I humored the OB (new OB ) last pregnancy and took it... Yep, still took me out for a day and a half even though she insisted it was in my head. Ok, well, considering I had to keep up when I had pneumonia, so I know there is no break, somehow I don't think I would do that to myself and make my life harder.

Oh I scheduled my sugary drink fest for next week, so Im with you :)

But I over-research everything and like to know my options. My entire moms side of the family are diabetics (type II) so this test especially was very important to me. I don't have any of the other risk factors other than family history, but no way am I taking any chances.

I would rather prick myself. Then again, I was on Lovenox/heprin for 3 pregnancies and had to stick myself 2-3 times a day so....

  • I dont want to do it for the simple fact I still get morning sickness and Im pretty sure the half hour drive to my doc without food is gonna make me puke alone. However, im going to do it and as quickly as possible. Im actually very interested what the results say.

-----quote box fail----- It's gotta be better than the stuff you have to drink for a CT scan too. A liter of that foul stuff is just so awful!! I got the orange Glucola, and I'm hoping it isn't that bad. I've heard orange is the best one.
Are you talking about the Barium drink for CTs? Colo prep is worse (in my opinion) but mostly because of the sour taste and intended side effects, lol! The Barium is bad if you don't drink TONS to flush it out so it doesn't turn into the white brick of death ;)

I also still get morning sickness and was worried about this too. If you are taking the one-hour test, you are still allowed to eat before you go in, I would just avoid anything with excess sugars/carbs. I had some cereal to keep myself from throwing up the orange drink (was still hard 'cause blargh). For me drinking it wasn't that bad, it was the wait. I'm very happy that I passed the one-hour because I'm not sure I'd survive the three.

Yeah the Barium drink was not fun... but I would do that again before I do colo prep again.  8 ounces of drink every 10 minutes.

    Test
  • I didn't think it was that horrible.  Is it PLEASANT? No.  But it's low on the list of things that suck while pregnant in my personal book.  :)

Harsh words alert:  I think it's silly to skip it - it's important for your health and your baby's that you do this test, just to be sure.  It's a lot less worse than losing your baby.

  • If I didn't have hypoglycemia I wouldn't care and would do the GD test with minimal whining. But as is, I'm testing my blood sugar 4 times a day for 2 weeks instead.

  • People make a big deal of the test, but for me it wasn't anything bad at all.

The drink is just flat soda. I don't drink non-diet sodas normally, but it wasn't bad. It's a small drink- like a child size juice. I think mine was orange flavor?

I'm normally very jittery after sugar, but it wasn't even as sugary as a piece of cake with frosting.

    Bring a book.
  • I had my test yesterday.  I opted for the orange flavor which was given to me ice cold.  I chugged it in less than a minute.  It wasn't bad at all - tasted like sugary orange gatorade.

  • I got the lemon-lime.  It tasted like Sprite syrup.  Just really super sweet.  I had a salad for lunch (which is fairly normal) and drank the drink at 2:30 for my 3:00 appointment.  They tested at 3:30 and it was normal.  The drink didn't taste great, but I would never refuse to take the test.  It's not a terrible experience when you think of the alternative.
