AW: "Perfect" 6+3 ultrasound results! :)

So I haven't properly intro'ed here because I wanted to wait for a heartbeat. I think I know many of you already, though. For those on mobile, this pregnancy came after FET #1 following IVF 2.1 (had a cycle cancelled before ER, so I never know if this was my second or third round of IVF). We've had two losses, including after IVF #1, which involved ultrasound hell. I have been severely anxious for today's scan, and got almost no sleep last night.

But today's ultrasound was described as "perfect" by all involved! Still looks like a little blinking blob to me, but I'll take their word for it. Measured at 5.9 mm with a heartbeat of 120, which the doctor said was exactly spot on for 6+3. That's better than the last pregnancy ever got, even though I made it to 8 weeks. I thought my dates worked out a bit differently, but they said IVF dates don't quite get counted the way you'd expect. Whatevs. They also did bloodwork for HCG and progesterone, but I have no idea why and I don't really want to know the results in case they make me worry.

It was also nice to see my old RE (I'm doing distance monitoring at my local clinic), who I always liked very much, even though he couldn't get me through a stim cycle without a crash. He really is gifted in the bedside manner department, and he was very sweet and professional today.

I wanted to flag @chucktgirl here to ask about the idea of not getting another ultrasound before being graduated. These things make me sooooooo anxious, and I'm not 100% certain they're risk-free. Has anyone else asked for fewer scans before graduation?

I think I'm ready to admit that I'm PREGNANT!! now, and I'm actually going to do that ticker thing.

I don't know what the m/c rates for a CCS'ed embryo are after a heartbeat is seen, but I'm assuming the chances of a live birth are 90% or better. (Anyone know??)

US have been used for a very long time. I believe they are safe. I love seeing baby. But anyway, congrats again!!!! I am soo happy you made it over to this side. Once a heartbeat is detected, things are definitely in your favor!

@pblge I am so glad that you feel comfortable enough to join! I have never experienced a loss, and I am so sorry for your previous losses. But I also only felt comfortable graduating myself until after my ultrasound (which was at 6w1d).

I wasn't even expecting a HB, but when they told me what it was I immediately wanted to start obsessing over if it was good enough. I (well, my RE) stopped me. She said, when people tell me congratulations, I have to stop thinking what if and realize that yes, I AM pregnant, and just say thank you! (My mind was blown) $:\$ ">

Congratulations, on a great update!!

As far as the scans go - I struggled with something similar, but in the end, I decided to take all the scans they were comfortable giving, since seeing the baby did more for my peace of mind than worrying whether or not it was causing harm (nothing has been proven that it has and they've been doing this for decades).

Ditto what @bayareagirl2011‌ says, I will take as many ultrasounds as they will give me. I'm amazed at what we see at the ultrasounds, and it's very comforting to see their heart beating and seeing them change. I've been so spoiled with ultrasounds, it's going to be hard when they stop giving them to me so frequently. Congrats to you!!

Congrats! Usually my re gives one u/s and if everything looks good then you graduate. That's how it was with ds and everything worked out fine.

This time around since it was twins I had a couple more u/s. I don't think the u/s pose a health risk to the babies. I can't count how many I've had this pregnancy.

Congrats again! What a great feeling! Have you found an OB/midwife yet? If you're fine not having another u/s for 6+ weeks (examples: my midwife couldn't fit me in until 11 weeks, and they don't have an u/s in their office, the other OB practice I called doesn't do u/s before 20 weeks unless a problem is indicated), then just let yourself relax and enjoy this time! I had a second one at 8 weeks, which was graduation day for me. I won't have another until 20 weeks.

Well, big fat congratulations, @pblge! Yes, I was sick to death of weekly u/s, and I've also been reading more and more about potential risk (even though I still believe it is minimal.) I don't know when your RE graduates - 8, 9, or 10 weeks? If I was in your situation, I would ask for the next u/s to be at 8 weeks or later (whatever graduation week is for you). That way you can get one more u/s in before you graduate, and will have up to date info to bring to your OB/MW. It will also actually relieve your mind, as 8wks is a loss milestone for you. If everything shows okay then, you can breathe a nice big sigh of relief. My final reason for making sure you get one more u/s in before you graduate is because I am having one helluva time obtaining another u/s. I am past my 10w milestone, and it's been three weeks since I've had an u/s to confirm whether or not I still have a developing fetus. You just never know what may come up with your OB to delay your next one.
But do I think you need them every single week? Nope, I declined them at my REs and they were perfectly okay with that.

For my own selfish purposes (see other thread) how many weeks past transfer are you? Is 6+3 meaning that you are two and a halfish weeks past transfer?

I'm just feeling pee-oed that I am being told I have to wait until four weeks past transfer (7+3 weeks) to do an ultrasound.

@chucktgirl - Thanks for your input! Where have you been reading about potential risks? Would love to see more about that. I think I have an obgyn picked out, and they don't have a waiting list. I just commented on your other thread, but I'm so sorry you're going through this!

It's a team clinic somehow affiliated with the supposed best hospital for births in the area (there's a birthing center, but they don't take insurance, so to hell with that). They use this
"centering" type of care that sounds really interesting:

But I have no idea when they plan on doing ultrasounds there. I was waiting to hear from my clinic before I called to ask these question, and unfortunately, the faxes didn't go through right, so I have to wait until tomorrow. The nurse said they'd likely want one more u/s at 8 weeks before they graduated me, unless there was reason for doubt.

@runawaylaurel - Are you saying that you will go three whole months without an ultrasound? Crazy!

Just wanted to add that my RE didn't do US, which is why I was released directly to the OB, where I had my first US at...I think it was 8w2d. I am not in the U.S., though, so things are in general a little different here.

yes! 3 months! It's driving me crazy, and I'm only halfway through the wait (week 14).

I really liked the 8 week u/s, the embryo actually starts having some features, like little arm nubs. My tech said it's like a gummy bear at that point.

Thanks. I actually wasn't searching it out... it came up in a few articles I was reading online. A couple of them were saying that doctors now are offering fewer u/s because they might have an effect. I never saw a link to a study or anything like that, so it could just be cautious speculation. Because I read it a couple times I'm sure if you search for it, articles will come up. I just couldn't justify weekly ones anymore for myself.

Congratulations!!! Very happy for you! I am guessing that live birth rates with genetic testing vary by clinic, but my clinic has an 84% live birth rate with PGS embryos for my age range.
