Success after IF

Sorry to hijack today, but...

The doctor just called me to tell me that they gave J an extra Hep B vaccine! She said there's no adverse affect, but now I can't seem to shake this panic I feel about how much he's received. She apologized, and I was friendly enough, but I am really upset by the oversight and wish I would have said something. What do you think I should do?

  • Like he had 2 in one day or just an extra dose overall? 2 in one day would make me really irritated because that's a lot on his little system. An extra does overall doesn't bother me as much. I might research it a little bit. Dr. Sears has info about vaccines as I think CDC does too. But eh, I would think he would be okay overall.

  • I would totally be pissed even though my guess is that it will have no ill effects. If you are still feeling like you want to say something, I would definitely call your pediatrician back (when you're feeling calm) and telling her that you're upset; as pp suggested calling the office manager is an option too.

  • I would be pretty upset.  I would want to know how this happened, what their corrective actions are, and what methods they will use to prevent this in the future.  As far as how it happened, it makes a big difference (to me) whether it was 2 in the same day or 1 extra overall.  The one extra overall could be written off as a clerical error (although still a big deal that needs to be investigated) but if LO got the same vaccine twice in the same day, what happened?  Was he supposed to receive a different vaccine and got the wrong one?  Were they supposed to give the 2nd vaccine to another child, and that kid missed their vaccine?  There needs to be some investigation, some correction, and some retraining.

  • You know what?  The more I think about it... You were uneasy about your pediatrician questioning your milk supply and LO's growth curve, and then this happened.  Perhaps it was just a really bad day, but perhaps you might want to look at other pediatricians.  Your baby's doctor is too important to mess around.  You need someone you can trust 100%, and I don't know that I would after this.

  • I agree that you should maybe look into it a little more and perhaps talk with the office manager about the oversight. That is something that definitely shouldn't happen. I would want to make sure that it was investigated a bit more as to how that could have happened.

  • Last night, I was panicked that something terrible would happen to him. I got in touch with a friend whose husband is a pediatrician and he talked me off a ledge. I still am leery that there's a potential for a reaction -- whether now or long term -- but for now I think I'm okay with accepting the likelihood that it will be fine. (Did I not learn from IF to avoid Google at all costs??)
That having been said, I am pissed at the oversight and even more so, the capricious nature of the phone call from the doctor. It was as if she was just shrugging it off and hardly apologetic. What if that was something else that could have potentially been very dangerous?
So thank you all for your advice and guidance. I will be calling the office manager tomorrow and making a complaint. That coupled with the uncertain feeling I got from the pediatrician regarding my milk supply and J's growth has convinced me to find another doctor.
I'm so bummed because I loved the practice we were at before we moved cities. I am thinking of just going back, but it's at least 35 minutes away with no traffic. I'm so annoyed.
