When will/have you stopped rooming in?

DD is 7 wo and I've been sleeping on a twin bed in the nursery. I'm certainly not ready to move back into the master but I've started to wonder, when will I? To those of you rooming in with baby or with baby rooming in with you, when will you stop?

  • I'll move him to his room when he's around 3 months or has outgrown his RNP. He will be sharing a room with 3yo DS, so I want him to be as good of. Sleeper as possible.

    1st pregnancy: m/c began 1/12/09 d&c 1/13/09 8wks. Baby stopped growing at about 6wks.

  • I'm not sure when I'll be ready to move LO to her room, but I just know not anytime soon. She sleeps just fine in our room and I like that if she gets up to eat she's right next to me so it makes it easy. I'm guessing if she can start sleeping long stretches consistently I'll be more ready to move her. Her room is on the opposite side of the house as ours so that plays a big part in it all. I don't like the idea of her being over there by herself, yet, and I don't want to walk that far to wake up in the MOTN.

  • I would say that we will wait until she outgrows her bassinet, but LO is (at 10 weeks), the size of many of the other babies here at birth! She's a whopping 7 pounds and 19 inches long. She may never grow out of the bassinet ;-) (though we are getting excellent mileage out of newborn size clothes!)

Since my original criteria is shot, I am aiming for 4 months. Hopefully, by then her growth will have been on track for some time (she's a slow grower), so we will be off MOTN feedings (she's on a every 2 hour schedule for growth) and won't need her so close.
  • I had been sleeping in the nursery until this week. She sleeps for a 4-5 hour stretch at night now, and I missed sleeping in the same bed with my husband, so we are making good use of the monitor now. She's 5 weeks.

  • Cosleeping has worked well for us so not anytime soon.  DS1 slept with us until 18M, this LO I'm guessing will be similar but we'll follow his cues.  Although I don't think I'd want to go much past 18M; I remember we were feeling pretty crowded by then and DS1 was a squirmy sleeper. :)

  • We are in the process of transitioning now at 7 weeks. He has been in the newborn napper in the pnp up until recently. Now we are getting him used to laying completely flat in the main portion of the pnp. I will probably start next week with naps in the crib, then once LO is waking less during the night we will move him over at night. We decided absolutely no later than 6 months, but my goal is 4-5 months.
  • Dd moved when she started sleeping through the night at about 6.5 months. We will probably do the same this time, especially since his nursery is on the othe side of the house and right next to DD's room. I don't want him to wake her.

  • We moved her out of the bedroom around 4 weeks and she is almost 7 weeks now and it was seriously the best thing we've done. Now I can honestly say we have a little night routine going on where I'll take her up to bed around 8 for bath, change, nurse, swaddle, bedtime song, all white noise objects on, paci, and bed. By 9 she's been sound asleep and won't wake until 6. I love the hour or two I get to spend with DH once she's asleep and the fact that we have our bedroom back.
  • I stopped rooming in when DS2 turned 6 weeks old. Could be coincidence, but he dropped one if the MOTN feedings, when I moved.

  • DS will be 6 weeks old tomorrow and we moved him to his crib this weekend. He goes down at 9, and like PP said, it's been nice for DH and I to have our bedroom back, and have some time before we go to sleep to watch some tv and just relax again. He wakes up around 3, but is usually fed, changed and re swaddled in 30 minutes, so I don't mind having to walk to his room across the house since it's just once in the MOTN.

  • DS went in the crib in his room at 4 weeks, it was easy. DD is much fussier and its easier for me to sleep in the same room with her. I've moved in to the guest room with her so dh can sleep. I'm on leave from work. I hope to get her in her room sleeping in her crib at night before I go back to work in 2 months. Right now she's so gassy and fussy I feel lucky to get her to sleep at night at all. Sometimes its in the bed with me, in a co sleeper, in a bounce chair, in this other bassinet thing, but rarely is it in her crib in her room. We go to the dr tomorrow and I think she may have reflux and I'm hoping for some relief.

This. 3-4 months old, we'll make the switch. Since she'll be sharing a room with her sister, we really want her sleeping well at night. She does great right now (sleeps through the night, only waking once to eat)...but grunts a lot. So I'd like her to get over the grunting so she won't wake her sister.

  • As of right now, the plan is to have him continue sleeping in our room until around 6 months.  I'll be on break for Christmas vacation, so the tentative plan is to transition him to his crib (in his nursery on the other side of the house) then  :)

  • I am planning on transitioning her to her room around 6 months. Part of me is looking forward to having her in her own space, but another part of me is scared to be so far from her all night. We are just starting a nighttime routine right now where she should be in her PNP alone for an hour or so while DH watch tv together in the living room, but I'm just so tired that I end up going to sleep when she does anyway!

  • DS will room with us until he is able to sleep through the night without nursing. For DD, that was 9 months. I anticipate going that long or longer for DS.
  • Already have for her first stretch. After her first MOTN feed, I will sleep on the futon we have in her room. It's mostly because I don't want to disturb DH and it's easier for me.

  • I think it was around 9 weeks.  She had been in the RNP next to the bed.  Our house is pretty small, so I can hear her through the wall next door.  Her crib is right against the wall to my bedroom.

We had tried putting her in the crib for a couple of weeks before, off and on.  She'd last maybe an hour or two and I'd bring her back in the room.  Now, she's doing 4 hour stretches, wakes up to eat and then is down for another 1-3 hours.

    She's 11+ weeks.

The day we got the monitor was the day we decided that she could be in the crib.  She was a lot more alert and stuff too, so I thought it was a good time to move her out.

  • DD1 moved to her crib around 6 months do I'm guessing the same for this LO. I really don't like having to get up and out of bed in the middle of the night so it's just easier to have them right next to me.

  • No clue. We are happy bed sharing for now. I guess I would like to transition LO to the bassinet beside our bed in the next month or two. She can sleep with us until she outgrows her bassinet for all I care. I do miss having the bed to just my DH and myself, but we both like the time we have with LO. She will be our only baby. Soaking every minute up!
  • DD slept in our room for about a month (she's 7.5 weeks) and now she sleeps in her room but she's still in the PNP. I need to work on getting her to sleep in the crib because it's silly to have both beds set up in the same room.
  • 3-4 months, or sooner if he starts doing longer stretches. Whenever he starts rolling we'll have to move him out of the RnP anyway.
  • DD is 4 1/2 weeks and she sleeps in a bassinet in our room. I will put her in her room around the time she is 6mo, just like I did with DS.
All of our rooms are upstairs but our bedroom is on the opposite side of the upstairs floor from the kiddos' rooms.

LO splits nights between nursery and our room. I wanted him to get use to his crib but wasn't ready to move him full time.

LO is a good sleeper and I normally get 4hrs in between night feedings. I put LO to sleep in his room as part of our night routine and DH (who gets home from work around midnight) will bring him to me 3-4am feeding then LO spends rest of the night in our room.

I'll probably leave LO in his crib when he cuts out that last feeding.

  • LO is 4 weeks on Tuesday and we started transitioning her a couple of days ago.  Currently she does her first 2 stretches there, 8-12 and 12-4.  Then, after the 4 am feeding, she is usually fairly alert and so I just put her in the RnP in our room because she tends to be content just sitting in there for a while.  Where, in the crib she fusses when she's not asleep.  It's mostly selfish because I know I could get her to sleep in the crib after a little rocking and being patient, and I just don't have the patience right now.  Mama needs her sleep!

The goal is to have her in the crib all night by the time I go back to work.  I would love for it by 6 weeks when I go back part time, but definitely by 9 weeks when I go back full time.

  • LO moved to his crib at 5 weeks old. He makes a lot of noises in his sleep, and so does DH. Everyone sleeps better, especially me. He's actually started to STTN, so the rest is easy to come by, which is great, since I return to work on sept. 2. My pedi encourages to have DS2 sleep in his own room.

  • Probably not until she's consistently sleeping through the night without waking to be BF.  With DD1, this was at 13 months.  I'm anticipating that it will be sooner than that this time, but we will see.

  • Right now baby is in a PNP in our room.  Once he's reliably waking up only once a night or so, I'll move him into a real crib in his big brother's room.  The last thing I need is my 3 year old getting woken up too.

  • I have no plans really. She's in the RnP next to us for now (at 7 weeks) but I think once she outgrows that we will sidecar her crib until she's completely done with night feedings, even if that's beyond a year or two. I'm really not trying to get her out though.
  • DD has been in her own room (moved out of the PNP in our room) for the past few nights. She's 4 weeks and has been sleeping 6 hours at night. She's a grunter too, so I have a hard time sleeping when she's in our room!
