Which diaper pail?

I used the Munchkin Arm and Hammer one with my first. I liked it fine but when I bought another one to replace it after our house fire, I had a lot of trouble with it. It still stunk, and the lid was incredibly hard to close.

Ive been using a small trash can with a lid and it works great for wet diapers or when I can empty the poop into the toilet but other times I cant stand the smell, even with wrapping them up in a plastic bag before putting them in the trash.

Our church nursery uses the Diaper Genie and Im not real crazy about that one either but I guess I wouldnt rule it out.

With 2 kids in diapers Im thinking I definitely want a diaper pail of some sort. Any other brands you all like?

Re: Which diaper pail?

  • I was wondering the same thing. I am so glad you posted this I will definitely be following this thread. I had the diaper genie 12 years ago with my son and was not impressed. I was wondering what was new or different that had come out since then.

  • We have always used a diaper genie and it has worked okay for us. We moved a couple of weeks ago and the last thing that didn't end up in the truck with us was our diaper genie so we diapers have been going into a lid trash can and poop has either gone to toilet or into a small bag (Got a couple of boxes of the ones meant for picking up dog poop on walks from the $1 store) and right outside to the trash.

Those little $1 store baggies really contain smell well!
  • Since I am cloth diapering I'm just using a heavy duty trashcan with a step lid. I made sure it had a good seal on it and I'm using a wet bag. Idk if this helps with disposables but seems like you would just use a trashbag instead of a wet bag.
  • I had done some research and ended up getting the ubbi. It has a rubber gasket that's supposed to keep the smell down and you can use regular kitchen garbage bags with it. I've haven't had a chance to use it yet but I have high hopes.
  • I got the Tommie tippee one. Haven't u send it yet but other moms have told me it is good.
  • We bought the ubbi, partly because it's metal and uses normal bags so if we really wanted it could be used as a garbage in the garage or one of the basement rooms at some point.

  • Also, you can always sprinkle some baking soda in your can/diaper pail to help absorb some of the smell.

  • We just got the ubbi diaper pail. A lot of people said they loved it so that's why we went with it. We really only plan on using it at night, during the day we'll just take the diapers right outside.

  • @pnwlover12 I probably won't buy a new one either. When I lived in an apartment on the third floor it was nice to have I suppose but now I can take it right out as well.
  • I really like our diaper genie, but it's the only one I've ever used...so not much to compare it to. ;)

  • I will be using the Dekor diaper pail... I like that it is a step to open (hands free), easy to use, can use regular kitchen bags, can be later used as a regular pail and comes in fun colors.

  • I think the Diaper Genie was great and really kept the smell in. We ended up buying a Diaper Champ just because we'll sion have two in diapers and you can use regular garbage bags opposed to the expensive Genie bags. It seems to keep the smell in but it's just putrid when you're changing the bag! I had no smell when changing the Diaper Genie bags.
  • We bought The First Years Clean Air Odor Free diaper pail. We haven't used it yet, but it has good reviews and I like that it uses regular kitchen trash bags.
  • We got three separate diaper genies at our shower so it looks like that's what we are going with! No experience with it yet.

  • A mom of two gave us the munchkin arm and hammer pail at our shower even tho we registered for the genie because she said they've had both and liked it so much better. So I'm going with it...

I got the Tommee Tippee 360 sealer. Have not used it on a poopy diaper yet but did lots of experiments with smelly stuff in diapers, like lots of garlic, and it worked great!

  • We use the Arm and Hammer pail. No issues with it at first but I will say it gets stinky and needs replaced after some time. I figured that is normal as it's an inexpensive plastic pail and holds in a lot of super gross odor.

  • Anyone heard of or used the safety 1st diaper pail? Its only 16.99 at BRU and gets surprisingly good reviews. It also uses regular trash bags. Im thinking I may try this one...
  • The Diaper One and Done gets a lot of good reviews, but as far as I can tell, it's just an open can that hangs off the side of your changing table and holds small trash bags. You toss everything in, then tie it up and throw it in a regular can.

I'm thinking about using a two-bag process: first putting the dirty diaper in a plastic grocery bag or small garbage bag, then putting it into the Diaper Genie Elite.

  • On the dog bag note: I nannied for a family recently who used a Ziplock baggy for every yucky diaper. (The family had 2 year old twins and a 13 month old.)They threw the bags in the kitchen, in a normal garbage can (don't think it was covered. And it was out in the open) and there was ZERO smell.

  • I got the arm & hammer one because I liked that it sprinkled baking soda onto every diaper, but I guess I'm not anticipating miracles...it's plastic and it's holding poop, so I assume it's going to stink regardless.

Zip lock bags can get expensive... I save bread bags whenever I can. They work just as good.

  • Another Dekor here. I mainly got it because it came in a color that matched our theme. But I like that it has a spring loaded lid part that locks and has the little foot thing to open it.

I bought the tommie tippee one. We tried using it with DS1's dirty diapers, and found it was awful. I'm praying it works better for smaller diapers. It didn't fully seal around about 50% of his diapers, so we had to stop using it because the odor when you opened it was enough to make a non-pregnant person puke.

  • Diaper champ!  We have one upstairs right now and will be getting a second one so we have one on both levels.  We spray ours with lysol when we change the bag and use the glad febreeze scented bags- super easy.

In all honesty- diapers were not smelly until our son started eating solids and toddler diapers are all kinds of smelly in ways that baby diapers were not. If anything, you'll want a good pail once your kid is 12 mo and over!

  • We use a regular old bathroom step can with lid and I line it with grocery shopping bags or the small garbage liners.  We take the bag out to the bin just about every other day.  I had the genie and didn't like it.

We just use dog poop bags too and put them outside. I know I'm in the minority but I think the diaper pails are a waste of money.
We do the same. We have a SimpleHuman step can that works for pee diapers.  We didn't need to take them out until DD really started eating all solids around a year and a half. Now? Holy hell, I can't believe how much stank a tiny turd can make. Straight outside.
