So I would like to continue to breastfeed after a year or as long as possible. I work part time and currently pump three times a day the three days I work. I know most people switch to cow's milk after the year, but are there any benefits to continue to give breastmilk while they are at daycare/babysitters? Since he will be eating more solids I'm not sure if he will be needing the same amount of milk. Does anyone have any experience with this that would know how much milk they will need after a year while eating solids? Anyone ever maybe combine breastmilk and cow's milk? Maybe give one bottle breastmilk a day and the rest cow's milk? I want to continue to breastfeed but don't want to have to pump 3 times a day... TIA ladies.
Re: extended breatfeeding and weaning pumping after a year
you could continue to pump, although it's a pain so most people want to stop when their LO is around a year. also, the older your LO gets, the less milk you will likely get, so it may not be worth it anymore past a certain point. i would start by cutting back to 2 pumping sessions a day for a week or so, then cut back to 1, and then stop. you can transition down to 0 by doing a couple of days of quick pumps (just enough to relieve engorgement).
if you have frozen milk, you can continue sending that until you run out. you can send all frozen BM, or you can mix it with whole cow's milk. and yes, your LO will need more solids and less BM. you could send a cup of BM/WCM or combination for each nursing session your LO will miss, along with solids.
if you are still nursing on demand when you are home with your LO, and they are eating a balanced diet with good sources of calcium, they honestly don't need any cow's milk at all. you also don't want to overload them with tons of WCM, because it can fill them up and make them not want to eat solids.
