  • I think it is silly to spend all of your adult vacations in Disney or only with family.

I am talking has lots of disposable income and goes on 3+ vacations a year. All Disney, all with family. None just as a couple.

  • It is gift grabby to only invite me to your kids birthday party and nothing else for the entire year.
Maybe?  Maybe not?  Unless they don't throw a lot of parties and this is the one that they have...  I guess it depends on what is typical for your group of friends / family.  Some people use kids parties as a chance to go all out and have a big party with a children's event included.  could this be the case?

For our circle of friends, who started having children later it was typical to have large birthday parties which included the parents friends.  Especially when the kids were little, it was more a party for the parents who maybe couldn't get out as much as they use to.  We always saw it as a fun time.

If I want LO to have another $15 toy, I'll buy it for her. Why on earth would someone think their invite is about gifts at this age? It's not like a 12 year old girl invited the kids she never talks to.

Baby shower? Sure, I could agree. It's more intimate and a party all about the gifts.

I was afraid of coming off that way. I just invited everyone I knew with kids because it's going to be a fun party and I thought they'd enjoy it. Hopefully it didn't come off gift grabby, but some people probably took it that way. My sister thinks I should invite everyone that is coming to DD's party to my baby shower in a few weeks. I said no because that is gift grabby. She thinks it's rude that I'm not.
This is cool. We were not invited for a cool party. Just to keep up appearances.

You are absolutely right - depends on the group. Abnormal for our group. Lots of events, we only get invited to the gifty ones to bolster the numbers.

  • I was told it's rude to request no gifts in the wrong setting. People like to give gifts. I think it would be acceptable to note no gifts please if the party is freaking huge, but inappropriate for my tiny intimate party.

I didn't want gifts for my wedding or first child. Apparently my decision to forego the baby shower really upset a lot of people. I figured I had the money to buy my own stuff, and that it would be rude to have a shower. People felt pushed away and excluded by me.

  • Dang I actually have one! At a casual lunch of say, 4, if three plates are delivered and the fourth is told it will be a couple minutes, that person should tell everyone to please start their meals. Especially if anyone has a hot plate. Eta: and ESPECIALLY if that person is a male and there is a female at the table with a hot plate.
That seems to be the polite thing to do. :)

especially if one of the women is pregnant (although you might not have told people yet) but still! when i was pregnant i would have eaten my left arm at meal time.  i was always starving!!!

When waiting for other people's food to arrive, I don't think I've ever had someone NOT say, go ahead and start without me.

Maybe he isn't up on etiquette or he didn't notice you all were waiting?
I've been around several who didn't say to start, and I always make a harsh judgement about the person. I can't help it.

  • This really isn't an UO but I'll put it here anyway... We went to a restaurant similar to Hooters. Though they wore smaller "uniforms". I've never had a problem with women making money with their bodies. We used to go to topless clubs quite often. After eating at this restaurant all I could think was Thank god I have a son and not a daughter. I feel really hypocritical about this.

It is gift grabby to only invite me to your kids birthday party and nothing else for the entire year.
This entirely depends on the relationship. I only invite the kids at daycare to birthday parties for the most part. A couple we have done other things with but for the most part, only parties.

We also don't have a ton of friends here so we stretched the invite list for Leo's first birthday in order to have a fun party with people. It had zero to do with gifts but did have a lot to do with people having kids. All the kids had a blast. I attend kid parties so my kids can have a couple hours of fun, not so I can have fun. If I happen to like the other parents, that is a bonus.

I have this internal struggle all the time. I agreed to a small wedding and baby shower (for James) but it always makes me uncomfortable. I absolutely love that my bff still sends me a birthday present but it is different to get a package on my door out of the blue than have a party hosted in your honor.
Also, we requested no gifts for James' first birthday because we flew back to TX for it and didn't want to deal with getting them back home. Everyone still brought a gift.

I very rarely go ahead and eat unless the kitchen messed up and it will be a bit, but I have never been in a situation when someone didn't tell us to go ahead.

  • I think as a pet owner, you owe it to your pet to at least try to figure out if something is wrong before shipping them off to the humane society.

This brought to you by a friend who got rid of her cat yesterday after she saw him pee on her kitchen floor.  She called the vet who said it was probably a reaction to stress and there was this, that, and the other thing they could do.  She took him to the humane society instead.

As someone who has been dealing with a cat peeing in the same fricking spot in the dining room for almost 5 months and has finally been almost a month pee free, it's annoying to me.
Unless there's more going on that she didn't share, I think she's a shitty person. Giving your pet away and knowing they could possibly be put down is heartless. Again, unless there are more serious circumstances, eg way bigger than your cat peeing on the floor once.

Her DH said that he can't deal with having a cat (that he didn't want in the first place) that has behavior problems, so it would be best to get rid of him.

  • @BobKat22 I'm sorry that you're feeling that way. When I was younger, my dad went through a lot of depression and anxiety issues. For some reason, one of the things that was driving him over the edge was our dog. We ended up giving him to my best friend, that way my dad didn't have to deal with him and we could still see the dog all of the time. Do you have any friends that might be willing to take your dogs temporarily or possibly forever? I'm not cool with people that just get rid of their pets because they're a nuisance or too much responsibility. But I think that if it's a mental health issue, it's different. Good luck with whatever you decide and I hope you find a way to calm your mind.

These are the treats we went with.  She gets 1 a day.  We did the cat prozac for 2 weeks and it was at the point where she wouldn't come out because she didn't trust us, so we stopped.  She hasn't peed anywhere since!!  I don't know what the deal with the treats is, but they've been a lifesaver for us.  I'm still keeping the bottle of cat prozac just in case we would need to start using it again when the baby gets here.  I have no idea what she was "stressed" about, but she's totally back to normal now.
