Breastfeeding

Better nursing = worse pumping?

Hi Ladies,
My DD is finally weaned from the nipple shield (6wks) and she has been nursing much more efficiently which is fantastic but now she wants to nurse from both breasts every feeding. Before I was pumping the opposite breast to get a little bit of freezer stash but now that's out. How long do you have to wait after a full feeding to get a good pumping session?

  • Congrats. Yes, if she's nursing more, you'll obviously pump less. You run the risk of creating on oversupply if you are pumping for a freezer baby. I'll let others chime in about how best to start building a freezer stash. I had a unique experience starting with no milk to being able to EBF twins and donate 1000+ oz so I don't know how to advise :)

  • I pump immediately after the morning feed, and my body figured it out- this is usually my highest volume pump of the day, even though LO just nursed.  During the week that milk goes with LO to DC. On the weekends I put it in the freezer.
  • To build my freezer stash I pumped both sides after her first feed in the early morning. I'd get 2-4 oz that way. I didn't pump any other time unless I had to replace a feed. I went back to work with about 70 oz in the freezer.

  • congrats to getting off the nipple shield! isn't it such a relief not to have to fumble with it anymore?

great advice above. i personally pumped one side while DS nursed from the other. i'd let him nurse from the side i just pumped afterwards if he was interested. i did it in the morning, since your supply is generally highest then. in general, you're not going to get a lot if you're pumping and not missing a feeding. i generally only got an ounce or two.

also, remember that you don't need a ton in the freezer. you really only need to cover your first day back at daycare, so just 12-15 ounces. if you have more, that's a great bonus, but don't stress about not having dozens of ounces in the freezer when you go back to work.
