NCDR : Car seat question - Nana?

@Nanaosaki06

Do you know if it's safe to use they chicco keyfit seats without the newborn inserts if the child is still in the 4-11lbs range?  The manual says to absolutely remove it at 11lbs, but doesn't say anything like "the seat is safe to use with or without the inserts under 11lbs."

Not for me - I work in a NICU and we have car seat positioning questions from time to time - this one came up recently.

Re: NCDR : Car seat question - Nana?

  • I would think not. I mean, the car seat is safe enough without it. The problem is not the car seat, it's the size of the babies. Since they are so tiny the insert acts as like a space filler. That way little itty bitty babies can sit safely inside the seat. Otherwise there would be tons of empty space and the baby would be more prone to flopping about in the seat in a crash. You can do things like rolled up blankets, but that has not been crash tested. The insert has. That insert is one of the reasons why it's one of the few seats out there with a 4lb minimum rating and is great for preemies.

  • @nanosaki06 I have a question, too. We have a Graco Snugride 35. When we installed it per the directions using the level indicator so it only shows blue, it seemed like it sits DS2 up too straight. As soon as he falls asleep, his head falls way over. It's so extreme, I worry about his airway. And since we're not supposed to add aftermarket pads or cushions, the belt is digging in his neck. I don't know what to do!

  • @unaveragejane We had this problem too.  We found that there was quite a bit of leeway in the level indicator, and had to readjust the base.  Also remember that this phase doesn't last long, and he will be holding his head up really soon.  Not that this fact changes the safety, but just in terms of anxiety over the future.
