Breastfeeding

trying to bf had a baby yesterday AM. help!

My son had his tongue untied this afternoon. He was born yesterday morning. He has had two really good feeds today but the last 4 to 5 hrs have been completely unsuccessful. I have pumped so that I can keep trying to get my milk to come in. My son is just so sleepy. He is either completely asleep if I swaddle him or a super crier if I unswaddle him to wake him up. Every time I bring him to me he falls asleep the second the nipple goes into his mouth. I have some breast milk in a bottle for him but he won't even wake up for that.

I don't want him to starve but this horrible nurse keeps suggesting formula. I have milk! Baby just doesnt want to eat. Any advice? Please and thank you.

Congratulations! You sound like you're already working really hard.  It's really normal for babies so young to fall asleep at the breast. Unless there is a medical reason for formula, I would just let the nurse know that it is really important for you to BF your son.  Is there a lactation consult available to work with you?  My LO fell asleep at the breast until he was about a month old.  Some things we tried with (and without) success: changing his diaper first so he was good and awake, skin-on-skin while nursing, using a wet rag to wake him, blowing on him, tickling his feet, spine, cheeks.  I spent the majority of my time in the hospital attached to my naked baby (he had his diaper on) with my shirt off so he had easy access whenever he was awake.  Good luck!

  • Congrats! Gently wake that sweet little up and just enjoy :). And lucky lady to have your milk come in to quickly and his tongue tie dx'd and fixed so promptly too!

  • It gets better! Dd didnt eat the first 16 hours after birth because we couldnt get her to wake up to eat and when she was awake she wanted nothing to do with it. They almost didnt let us leave since she wasnt eating that great but we did.If you have a leather couch at home its mean but it does wonders when they fall asleep duduring a feed to lay a naky baby on it. Eventually dd got used to the feet and spine tickling, even the leather couch!

For the first 3 weeks we had to wake her to eat every 3 during the day and 4 at night (but she was also on 5lb 6 oz after birth. Wasnt a premie either born at 39w) then she slowly started getting better about letting me finally know she was hungry! There is hope mama!

  • Try tickling his toes or wiping his face with a damp washcloth to wake him up! Glad the night nurse is more accepting of your feeding choice. Agree with asking to see the LC on call, most hospitals have them though some only have them available during day hours.l
