Pumping at work

For those of you back to work and pumping, how's it going? This is my third week, and I'm struggling hardcore. I'm pumping three times, and only managing to get sometimes 3-4 ounces per session. When pumping at home previously, I could pump 8 ounces no problems after LO ate. I'm super frustrated by this output and have a call to the lactation consultant for tips. I feel like my supply is going to go away and I won't be able to feed LO at all. I have no problem feeding him or pumping at home so what gives?

Re: Pumping at work

  • How often are you pumping? I am a teacher and pump twice while at work during the day. First time is about 2.5 hours after I feed DS and the second time is 4 hours later. I am keeping up with him but my output varies everyday. Sometimes I'll take home 20 oz and sometimes only 12 oz. I notice that if I go longer between sessions I sometimes get more. This isn't always the case though. Also I was told by a good friend that milk production is up between the hours of 4 - 10 am (I have no research to back this up) so I pump on the side that I don't feed DS on before I leave in the morning. I usually get about 5 oz then.

  • Loading the player...
  • I feed LO and pump in the morning before work. I will get 8 ounces. I start at 6 am and end at 6:30. I then pump again at 9:30, 12:00 and 2:30. Should I go longer at work? I was afraid of doing this because I didn't want my milk supply to go down if I went too long between pumping sessions.

  • How long are your pumping sessions?
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • The first time I went longer than normal was by accident because I was in meetings all day and not on my normal schedule. I was really full when I pumped and I pumped until I was completely empty. I got 11 oz that time! I would normally get 5 oz. I am only able to take two pump breaks at school so I try to spread them out the best I can to maximize my output. It's a work in progress trying to figure it out. This shiz is hard!

How much does your LO eat while you're away?
  • When I was ep-ing for C, I used to pump at 6, 9, 12:30, 4, and right before I went to bed. I essentially went a little bit longer between each session as the day went on, as you fill up faster in the mornings and slower in the evenings. I had oversupply, though, so that may have made a difference.

Leaving my desk to getting back to my desk was a half hour, so I pumped for maybe 20 minutes. While signaling let down I would look at pictures and videos of C on my phone because that is supposed to help. Toward the end of pumping when I noticed things slowing down I would do massage and compressions to help get as much as possible out.

    Hope that helps!

  • He's eating 4 oz about every 2-3 hours.

I have had a huge supply of milk since he was born, choking at let down and I never had a problem pumping while at home. Maybe I'm not relaxing? This whole thing is hard to figure out, but I'm determined not to give up although I feel super frustrated. Don't quit on bad days, right?

  • Pumping is a horrible struggle for me. No matter what I do, I can not pump more than 2 oz every 3 hours. It doesn't even seem worth the 20 minute breaks I have to take at work. Sometimes I lose track of time and forget to pump until it's been 4 hours, and I know I'm just making my supply worse... I hear other people saying they pump 8 ounces at once and it just doesn't even seem possible to me :(

  • I have low supply. I pump 3x at work. At 10, 1, and 4. The first week I got an oz or less each session. I followed the advice of an LC to boost supply and the 2nd week I got about 2 oz a session. That is a huge win for me. We have to supplement with formula due to low supply but I am really glad I have doubled what I get.
If you pump 3x and get 4 oz each that should be enough to feed LO while you are gone but that still sounds very frustrating based in what you used to get. Hang in there!
@LaurelJoy91‌ I set 3 alarms on my phone, one for each pumping session. There are days where I totally would have forgotten a session if my alarm hadn't gone off!

@whoberry What did you do to increase your pumping output? I have pretty low supply and I would have to go seven or eight hours to even hope to build up to 3 oz., so I'd love to maximize whatever I can get once I start pumping next week.

  • I honestly have a lot of respect for you ladies. I am nervous to go back to work for this exact reason... I dont know how i will get time to pump. To pump 3x at work is basically taking 1.5 hrs away. I know legally they are required to give you that time but sometimes it is just not realistic. The first week i return to work is my team's global meeting and we have back to back meeting for 4 days and the fifth day is a half day outing which I need to find somewhere with an outlet to pump.

@chickpea912‌ I am up to 9 Fenugreek a day, I eat oatmeal for breakfast every day and try to have a cup or two of mother's milk tea every day. I try to drink about 100 oz of water a day and eat a lot. I also pump after every feeding (except MOTN I am just too tired). LC said the key is to empty the breast so it signals the body to produce more milk. So I BF baby on one side and do breast compressions when he starts falling asleep and stops swallowing to make sure I empty the boob. That wakes him up for a few more swallows. (Sometimes he doesn't fall asleep but gets angry at my boob pulling on the nipple and I will do compressions then). Then I switch sides and repeat. Then we give him a 2 oz bottle of formula and I pump for 15 minutes. This was all on her recomendation.
I pump about 6 times a day during the work week. The first week I got maybe 4 to 5 ounces the whole day. By week two I was up to 10 to 12 a day ( so about 6 oz at work). I am on week 3 now and it's stayed at that level. LC recommended doing it for a month. At that point you have kind of done everything you can. She said to expect a 25 percent increase in supply but I got lucky and mine has doubled. I will probably never produce enough to stop FF but at least I feel like pumping at work is worth it now and he gets some BM so that is good.
Here is what my work days look like now ( keep in mind DH is currently home with LO)
4 am: BF only. No formula, he goes back to sleep.
7:30: pump while blowdrying my hair and eating breakfast. Sometimes BF a little too if LO is up and I have time. DH feeds him a bottle of BM or formula depending on what we have around the time I leave.
10, 1 and 4: pump at work (lo gets mostly pumped milk while I am gone and some formula)
6 or 7ish: BF, FF 2 oz, then pump
10 or 11ish: BF to sleep. Sometimes he needs formula too sometimes he doesn't. Then pump.

On weekends I BF, FF and then pump for all feedings except MOTN. All the pumping sucks but it's only temporary I hope! Good luck and sorry for the novel!

  • I'm having oatmeal every morning and it definitely helped me. Together with increasing my water intake it went up from maybe 1-2 oz per pumping session to almost 4 oz.

  • I'm worried about going back to work too bc I'm not pumping nearly enough compared to what LO will eat. Pumping has been very frustrating for me. I have on occasion gotten 4oz per pump but usually it's between 2-3oz total. I have only been pumping about 10 mins per session, bc by about 8 mins nothing is coming out anymore. I will have to try oatmeal and such and see if that helps increase my supply.

I usually get most of the milk after the 10th minute. A little bit at the beginning, then it stops for like 4 minutes and then I start getting more. Have you tried leaving the pump on for a few minutes after milk stops coming?

  • I would definitely try to relax and not watch the clock if you can. Where I pump, I'm able to take my laptop and keep busy. Maybe watch a video of LO to. I pump at 430(lo gets a bottle) then, 9/1230/330.

  • I usually pump three times at work.  Once when I get here, around 8, then around 11 or so, then again around 3 or 3:30, just before I leave for home.  Total in a day, I get between 14-18 ounces with all those pumpings.  Some days it's more and some less.  On days it's less, I tend to worry, but the next day is good again.  I agree with another response to try pumping longer if you have the opportunity.  I try to go 15 minutes each time, and sometimes an extra few minutes if I feel a letdown coming on right at the end.

Sorry, I don't have much advice for increasing supply. I remember with my older son, when I first started pumping, I'd get maybe 8 ounces a day.  That got better over time (as my body got used to it?).
  • I'm working 12 hour shifts and can only pump 3x a shift. So I pump at 2am when LO wakes up to eat, 5:30am before work, 9am,1pm,4pm, nurse LOwhen I get home at 7:30pm and pump afterwards, and before bed at 9pm. I've noticed that I really dry up in the evening and barely get anything from the last pump. This didn't happen til I went back to work so not sure what the deal is. I produce more on my four day weekends off because I can pump more. So my supply lessens during the work week, and I power pump during my days off to get it back up. Really wish I could still take fenugreek because that made a huge difference. I'm still making enough to feed LO and have some to freeze, but still disappointing because it's less than what I made before returning to work.

I will say I expected it to be more difficult to pump at work, but every one has been great about making sure I get my breaks.

  • Pumping at work is so freaking hard! I'm a teacher and have it worked out that my plan periods are evenly spaced... but by the time I leave my classroom, go up to the little office, pump, clean up, and head back down to my class, my plan period is practically over.  Plus, during one of those plans each day, I am supposed to have a meeting... So I basically roll into the meeting 30 minutes late.  I basically pump just enough to feed LO while I am gone for the day.

Last year, teaching while pregnant sucked... this year pumping while teaching sucks!  I need a nap!

  • I'm jealous of those of you with multiple opportunities to pump.  When I go back to work I'll get to pump once and that's during my lunch.  I'm also a teacher, but if I were to pump during my prep, I'd never get to go home at the end of the day. (ie. nothing would get done)

I'm not sure what your prep entails, but any chance you could use hands free bra and do your prep? I love my hands free bra. I pump while doing dishes, doing my hair and makeup in the morning, etc. If I can stay in one spot near an outlet for 15 minutes I can pump.

  • Do you just wear the hands free bra all day, or you change into it before you pump? I feel like it's a hassle to get in the bra since I have to take everything off and put them back on after, but the bra doesn't provide as strong of a support to my boobs.
  • I prefer the hands free straps. Then you can wear any bra you like.

We had no idea so the first couple days we were winging it. Now we know he takes 4 oz a feed and eats 3x while I am at work. So 12 oz will cover him.

Most babies this age eat every 2-3 hours and take about 3-4 oz per feeding (the general rule of thumb is 1-1.5oz/hour.  So, if you're away from baby for around 8-10 hours baby will probably need 3 bottles with 3-4 oz per bottle.  So, you'll probably need to leave around 9-12 oz of milk.

I leave at 8AM and get home around 6PM.  My DD (now that she's finally taking a bottle well) is eating around 9-10 oz total while I'm gone.

I just change into it to pump. It's a bit of a hassle to strip down, but my hands are free to massage more milk out.

  • Does it matter if I pump 2 or 3 times at work if I get the same volume? I need 12oz for 3 bottles and my LO eats every 3hours but if I can do 2 pump sessions and get same amount as 2 am I okay? Just worried about supply and continuing to nurse when not at work.
  • If your LO eats every 3 hours, I would still continue to do 3 sessions even if you're getting 12.

I'm in the same boat, and will drop to 2 pump sessions soon.  With DS, I did the same and had no problem with losing supply or continuing to nurse at home.  You can always try it out and add the pump session back in if you see your supply starting to dwindle.

  • @JulieSmiles‌ I went back to work last week. On the first day I pumped 11 oz. for the rest of the week I pumped 9 oz per day.

I'm having to pump when I get home, before I go to bed, and when I have time before work just to keep up with LO. This week she ate anywhere between 11.5 oz and 19.5 oz. My MIL is babysitting and I've had her feed on demand using paced bottle feeding. I worry about keeping up with LO especially on days when she eats 19.5 oz while I'm at work and I only pump 9 oz.

Do you guys have your baby eat on a schedule while you're at work or do you have the sitter/day care provider feed on demand?
  • I feel so envious of y'all getting so much out of your pumping--what pumps do you have?
