Re: Weekly GD Check In 08/19/14

  • Fingers crossed that the MFM finally found the right NPH dose.  For the last three days, my fasting numbers have been in the 80s!  First time I have had fasting numbers below 95 for more than one day.  Only takes 36 units of bedtime NPH and 750 MG of Metformin ER to do it.  I think the MFM has abandoned the plan to take me fully off of the Metformin, due to how much insulin it takes to get me to acceptable fasting levels with still taking half of my regular Met dose.

So far, aside from letting me know that they won't let me go past 40 weeks, neither the OB or MFM have commented about when they will want me to deliver.

  • I am starting to see my number creep up over 100. So I am needing to again cut back on the soda (which has worked for a day or two and then I am drinking it again like no other.)
My pre meal numbers at dinner time are and round the mid 90s to 100. Also bed time numbers are in the low 100. So I think my Glyburide dose is getting moved up.

QOTW: OB has said that they will induce me a week early. Not letting me go past 39 weeks. How that will happen I am not sure yet. Hopefully I can get more details as I meet with more providers in practice.

  • The diet is going ok.  My numbers still love to see-saw.  About to test for my post-breakfast numbers and then call MFM.  They were giving me a few more days to improve my numbers before increasing my glyburide again.  I thought I was making some good progress but this morning my fasting number was 115.

Both the MFM and my OB said this baby needs to come out before 40 weeks.  He is growing great still (50th percentile, last Friday he was 4.12lbs).

My OB hates to induce so as I mentioned in another thread she will attempt to sweep my membranes past 36 weeks to get my body to naturally jump start labor.  Which means that I could have this baby anywhere from 3-6 weeks from Friday.

  • Check In:   How is the diet going?  Any challenges that we can help out with?  Any new recipes/ successes that you want to share?  Rant/Vent about the lack of ice cream?

Starting to get a little stressed out over my diet, fighting off my cravings is hard. (Thank you again to the ladies that helped me this past weekend!) I've noticed I've had higher numbers on a daily basis, but they haven't been over what the guidelines are. I am so sick of eggs!!! 7 more weeks, right? :(

QOTW:    Has your doctor talked about the timing of delivery yet or are they taking a wait and see approach?

My doctor said that as long as I am measuring correctly that they will let me go to 40 weeks, but not after that. If she starts measuring larger they will take me earlier.

  • The diet is going ok. Still purely diet controlled. I am nervous about my fasting the past 2 days, 101 and 99 and my after breakfast his morning hit the 180's. I think I need to watch how much bread I am having. Hopefully the rest of the day and tomm will be better. as i am really trying to finish this thing out unmedicated.

QOTW: Has your doctor talked about the timing of delivery yet or are they taking a wait and see approach?

Initially they said a lot of their GD patients are induced at 39 weeks however with my LO measuring only in the 14th percentile last week so I am thinking there is no reason to induce so we will see.

    Anniversary

  • Finally figured out the timing of the glyburide and eating so as not to drop my sugars, and they have been great since.  The only high post parandial I've had was after my shower and I ate all the foods! Today was the first time since Friday my fasting has been >95 and it was only 96. that may be because I slept more than ate yesterday.

I asked my Dr. at my apt last week (since it was the first chance I've had to talk to her since my diagnosis) and she said we would probably deliver around 39 weeks, but definitely not past 40. I'm hoping I can push it to at least 39w3-4d as long as she still looks good.

One quick question... How do you vets handle eating out with family when you can't find ANY nutrition information for where you're going?  Going out for my niece's bday on Saturday and I can't find anything anywhere.  I may just grab something I know I can eat on the way and not eat there.

  • Diet/exercise going well. Had an appt yesterday at 33 weeks and fundal height was 34 so that's not too bad!

Dr has made no mention of any early induction, and I would fight anyway if he did. He said at this point he is "not concerned about the size" and basically said everything looks great, so I'm hoping that means he is just gonna let things happen as they happen!

@heathera1979, I usually just load up on veges and protein and limit the carbs. For example, we got sub sandwiches from Firehouse Subs the other day, I got wheat bread but still took the top part of the bread off and ate everything else. My numbers were fine.

  • Diet is going well - in fact I'm wondering if my meter is working. :) I just got back from a lunch place where I ate a big plate of salad, a bowl of soup, some soft serve and a couple of bites of pita bread and my 1 hour post lunch number was 97. Thought it would be higher than that.

Loving single serve Haagen Dazs ice cream cups right now - my local Kroger has them for $1 each (cheaper per oz than buying a pint) and it's easy to control the portions. Loving the strawberry flavor ones and I look forward to it every night.

I have a C-section scheduled for 10/1 which is 3 days short of my due date. I picked the date because my insurance resets that day and I need to figure out if I should move it up or not. Still on the fence if I should do a VBAC but LO is breech right now so I'm keeping the C-section appointment, just in case.

  • @heathera1979  I also load up on the protein and veggies and eyeball a small portion of carbs (as many places have hidden carbs in their meals).  We have also been trying to go to places where I can at least review the menu beforehand so I have some idea of what I can eat before we get there (even if the nutrition information is lacking).

  • My numbers are getting better, although that's primarily because I keep increasing my insulin dosage on my own. I did have a really low crash (35!) after dinner last night that was the lowest I've seen since starting insulin. I'm not at all sure why that happened, but thankfully nothing terrible happened other than soaking my pajamas with sweat.

I started twice weekly NSTs last week. The machine print outs look pretty much the same to me, but the different OBs at my practice seem to see vastly different things on them. The OB I had on Friday told me I was having contractions and checked my cervix. The OB I had today said everything looked great, but I could see the same patterns that the OB from Friday got so freaked out about. I think I'm glad I don't see that doctor very often.

My MFM and my OBs are waiting to see how things look as I get closer to my due date. I'm really hoping that it looks like I'll go into labor on my own around 39 weeks so that I don't have to be induced. I don't want an epidural, and I'm afraid of the extra pain induction can bring with it.

  • My numbers have all been in the right range.  It's crazy to me though that I can eat the same exact thing for dinner one day and lunch the next and my numbers be very different.  I want chocolate so bad it is driving me crazy.  I actually dreamed last night about making and eating brownies.  That's just pathetic.  I have sneaked in a bite or two every once in a while, but I just want to pig out right now on some chocolate.

Does anybody know anything about Stevia?  I am completely against using artificial sweeteners, but this is not considered to be one and I was wondering if it would be a good way to satisfy my sweet cravings.  Everything I have read said that it is safe during pregnancy, but I will ask when I go to the doctor tomorrow.  If you had had success with it, what all have you eaten?

I have not seen my OB since I was diagnosed.  I have only seen the midwife.  The dietitian told me that I probably wouldn't have to worry about delivering early if my numbers stayed good because the baby really wouldn't get any bigger than the average baby.  On a side note, thank you so much to the midwife who didn't call in another prescription for testing strips.  Who doesn't give refills for that stuff in the first place when the patient still has 8 more weeks until the due date? Fifty strips won't last long when you are testing four times a day.  SO Annoying!
  • My MFM delivers @ 39 weeks if a patient requires meds to be controlled and if their A1C falls within a certain range.  Otherwise, as long as the baby is not showing signs of macrosomia, he will schedule for 40 weeks exactly.  The A1C and LO size also determines how often he does NSTs (1x vs 2x/week). We will cross this bridge in 2 weeks at around 33 weeks.

I had an ultrasound today, but sans growth measurements since they were taken 2 weeks ago; he prefers to wait 3 - 4 weeks between growth scans.

    Otherwise, blah GD.

  • Check In: How is the diet going? Any challenges that we can help out with? Any new recipes/ successes that you want to share? Rant/Vent about the lack of ice cream?

So far so good on the diet, my numbers have been good. I am getting a little board eating so many of the same things all the time. I'm missing fried foods and dessert a lot, and getting pretty tiered of having to check the carbs for everything before I eat it. Sorry, I'm sure I sound pretty ornery at this point, I'm just ready for baby to be here and to go back to not having to constantly think about what I'm eating all the time.

QOTW: Has your doctor talked about the timing of delivery yet or are they taking a wait and see approach?

OB hasn't brought up timing of delivery but she was pleased with my numbers so that's good. I'm still hoping we can proceed as originally planed, I really don't want to be induced. I've been hoping for a fully natural child birth, but when it comes down to it, my biggest concern is having a healthy baby. FX I'll still be able to go all natural!

  • @cmcookaln‌ I've been using stevia for years and didn't stop for this pregnancy. My preference is for the liquid stevia extract, and I never use the stevia for baking since it usually has dextrose (carb alert!) added to make it bulky like sugar. I use xylitol in combination with stevia for bulk when baking.

You may also want to google a few paleo brownie recipes. I substitute the high-sugar dates in paleo dessert recipes with prunes and stevia.

This morning I ate the same thing I always do, I did the same things I always do. I took my glyburide the same time which I have taken since 20 weeks now

    Well I tested at 8:30a and I got a 119

Around 9a, I reached for my meter feeling off and dropped it .... Before it even hit the floor I passed out on the main radio channel at work. Apparently I said "take 1, I need a medic)

Ya the fireman in the room carried me to the back couch and called an ambulance. My blood sugar was 39. They gave me 2 gel packs and a dr pepper...and got it to a 59. I then ate a
Glucerna, oatmeal with milk and 1/2 banana. I got it up to a 113 about an hour later. I refused to let them transport ( haha you just don't at a police department)

Called the high risk which I see Thursday and he said stay off the meds for 24 hrs. Weirest day!!

What is most odd is my numbers have all been 130 and over for the most part and I haven't seen below 110 like 1 time in 2 weeks except fasting
  • @Cantisa I would try to eat something with protein. That may help to cancel out the extra glucose.  Definitely don't skip a meal because you don't want to bottom out during the night.  I feel like my life revolves around eating right now and not things that I want to be eating so I really have to force myself sometimes to eat, especially that last snack before bed time.
  • @Justabean3‌ ...yikes. at least you were able to call for help. Hope your numbers level out and give you a break.
  • I work for pd/EMS dispatch with a fireman in the room... Those turkeys better call me help!!

  • Check In:   I'm still having a hard time with the sugar thing.  After heaving for so long that "fake" sugar is terrible while pregnant it feels like I'm doing something wrong reaching for the diet soda instead of regular.  My numbers have been pretty good (even after chipotle!).  My fasting was a little high, but I've been trying new bedtime snacks.  Does anyone make pizza at home and have good luck with it?  We used to have homemade pizza once a week but I got a high reading after trying it.

QOTW:    My doc said she'll do a couple growth scans and as long as everything looks ok she won't let me go past 40 weeks.  I'm hoping LO keeps cooking until after 38 weeks so that my maternity leave will last through new years so I can spend time around the extended family for once.

  • @PC0909  While I haven't tried this, I have read that some women with GD will make a pizza crust using roasted cauliflower.   I googled it once and it didn't look too hard.  DH doesn't like cauliflower and I haven't been craving pizza, so I haven't been brave enough to try it yet.

If you do, let us know how it worked out.

  • @PCO909, I used to make a GD friendly "pizza" using a whole wheat tortilla, pizza sauce, cheese and toppings. It actually wasn't too bad. The tortilla gets a little crispy and it tastes pretty good - DH would actually eat it and he hates anything "healthy". :)

You can also try reducing the portion of pizza you eat and add a big salad to fill you up. I do that when I eat something like pasta or lasagna. DH and DS can still have the pasta but I will make myself a huge salad on the side.

I just started the diet last night. Can't figure out what to have for breakfast other than yogurt and fruit. Any suggestions ladies? Thanks!

QOTW: Has your doctor talked about the timing of delivery yet or are they taking a wait and see approach?

Since I just started it hasn't even been brought up yet. Next appointment with OB is Wednesday so I figure we'll discuss it then.

I was told to avoid fruit and milk before lunch. I eat one slice of law carb toast with a wedge of laughing cow cheese smeared on top.

  • So I went the MFM today. Baby is 5.5 lbs and looked great but this time the doctor said my fluid was high.

He has me coming back in two weeks to recheck. I will be 36 weeks. This freaked me out since it is the first time anyone mentioned there something off about my levels.

Your levels can start getting messed up at any time. If is one of the reasons they check with GD besides just growth. I have to go every week..
They do NST and fluid check... Then every 2 or 3 growth.

I hate the dang appointments, right now!!

I have been getting weekly us for the last month. They still haven't started the nst yet.

Lots of appointments! I even get to see my endocrinologist next week just to spice things up!
  • @mickeydoo I think breakfast is the hardest because there is only so much you can make.  I have had lots of eggs paired with half a bagel/cream cheese or a slice of cheese toast.  I have also had sausage biscuits all this week because I was so sick of eggs.  My frozen biscuits have 20g of carbs in one, and I put a big piece of sausage on it and my sugar has been fine.  I even had some fruit with my breakfast yesterday and my numbers were great.

What is this extra fluid thing?  I have had an appointment every week since I was diagnosed to check sugar and diet, but I haven't had an ultrasound since the anatomy scan. I am meeting with a perinatologist this week for an ultrasound though.
  • I made these cheesy biscuits this morning, and they were pretty good (a tad salty, but no big deal): https://www.satisfyingeats.com/breads/cheesy-cheese-garlic-biscuits/. I enjoy baking with almond and coconut flour, but some find the texture to be less than satisfying if they're not used to it.

  • @cmcookaln and @starla487: I appreciate your help! This morning I changed to light and fit vanilla yogurt with granola in it and it was within the carb parameters (and mentioned in my appointment) and it was still 144. I'm wondering if there is more going on in the morning with this as the rest of the day is fine. I did put an email in this morning to the educator to get her insight too.

There could be something else going on, but I'm surprised the above fit into your carb parameters... I basically eat a 0% Fage plain or 2 hard boiled eggs for breakfast because I'm much more comfortable staying away from the max # of allotted carbs for breakfast.

If you don't want to do eggs all the time I like cottage cheese with a little vanilla extract and cinnamon. I have ready to cook bacon and my morning coffee and am staying under 100. I added 1/2 and English muffin with peanut butter this morning and still 99. I would definitely add more protein in the morning though - it helps balance out the carbs.

I just want to say I had a personal best this week in pricking - last week I was having the worst time pricking, getting errors on the regular and then today I had to 'prick on the go' at a Target and did it with no issue. Treated myself to a lunch box set so I can bring my GD food to work in style. Because these days THAT is what is considered a treat....
  • Thanks for the morning tip; I'm going try for lower carbs. I ate 4 oz of the yogurt so only 9.5 carbs there. The granola brought it to like 31. My parameters are 26-35 for breakfast. Not going to tell DH that more protein was suggested though because he's been saying I need more protein all along. Haha love that I can ask these questions here and get great answers. Thanks!

I'm not losing weight (I'm not gaining a ton, either), but I can feel it when I lose muscle. This baby likes protein, apparently, so I'm trying to eat more of that.
