Vaccines - not a debate thread.

I was reading one of my pg books and had completely forgotten about Hep B. I know it's fairly common now around here for babies to get their first round of Hep B while they are still in the hospital. I'm not sure how I feel about this, I lean with waiting until the first set of shots at 8weeks. Does anybody have any recommendations on this or knowledge to pass on? Is this fairly standard everywhere now?

Re: Vaccines - not a debate thread.

  • We did it for my daughter. Honestly we just follow the normal schedule and vaccinate whenever she is "due"

  • My understanding of it was that it's an STD and was added to the schedule at that time for instances where the mother is unaware that she has it. For this reason as well as due to the fact that DS1 would not be traveling or otherwise at high risk for exposure, we delayed that one. He still got it, just not in the hospital.

  • We are not getting Hep B. My
Pediatrician said if the mother has a negative Hep B blood test before labor, it is not needed nor recommended. The only shot we are getting at the hospital is vitamin K.

  • We also skipped it at the hospital. Actually, she still hasn't gotten it yet. I don't have it, and I guarantee she won't be having sex or sharing needles anytime soon, so this is one that can be delayed for awhile, IMO.
  • We didn't do it with my son until 8 weeks. We will delay further with this baby. (I am on baby aspirin, so we did do the Vitamin K shot--it's a law in NYS to have it, so no opting out of that).

  • I don't think they do that in Canads. N was with us the entire time and I don't remember her ever getting a needle. Heel poke, yes, needle, no.
  • We skipped it for out first two and we will skip it again for this lo. Actually my 19 month old hasn't Even gotten the vaccine yet and won't for at least another year.

  • LO will get the HepB in the hospital. And We'll be getting all immunizations when LO is due for them.
  • We're passing on the HepB in hospital and will probably hold off for a long while. Both of us are negative and I don't plan on exposing the newborn to anyone that is. I read about it a lot and weighed the risks, and I just don't see were we can't hold off for a bit. I'm still trying to decide about the Vitamin K though. I can actually see that in some cases it is needed, and I can't find any compelling info so far that it's really harmful...I'll probably end up going with the Doctor's suggestion on that one.

Do they not routinely do a Vit K injection in the hospital in Canada?

One reason my midwife and some friends suggested doing the Vitamin K was because we do at some point have to drive home from the hospital. And as awful as it would be, car accidents do happen, so their thought was "Why not go ahead and make sure the baby has the ability to clot blood, just in case." Made sense to us, so Vitamin K is probably the only one we'll do at the hospital. Just a thought :)
We'll probably start the Hep B when we start the other rounds of shots.

I honestly have no idea. I should ask my doctor on Thursday and make it clear about what I want. I super pro vac but I don't think a newborn needs something quite that early.
  • I was supposed to have the hep B vaccine for my job that I had when I first became pregnant. (Healthcare related job) I couldn't have the vaccine because I was pregnant so I guess I will be getting it for my baby when they are born?
