NCDR: hand foot mouth disease

Guys, talk me down here. This is going to be long...

Tomorrow is my first day back at work. First time leaving Alex all day. I'm going to be a wreck anyway, but just to make things even worse, we just got a call from MIL that SIL got hand foot and mouth disease while they were at the beach this past week.

My niece had it the week before. MIL had both my niece and nephew just days after niece's symptoms went away. SIL was there too. Then they were all together for a week at the beach.

And I know it's common for adults to be carriers of the virus without showing symptoms. So of course I'm freaking out b/c I'm about to send my 2 yr old and 3 month old to her house full time during the weekdays.

What's a Momma supposed to do?? It's not like I can call in and say I need another week of leave. And having DH stay home for a day isn't going to do any good.

Ugh, I would definitely be worried. DD1,DS and myself all had HFM a few weeks ago. DD2 and H didn't get it.

We got it from a friend's kid. She didn't know he had it. He did have a fever when we saw them But she thought it was from teething.

Our doctor said we should be fine if there are no more symptoms. We went to my nephew's birthday party that weekend after I was sick and my sister's family never caught it. I was symptom free for four days before we went.

I would just have your mil constantly wash her hands and hope for the best.

I wouldn't call it off or anything. My sisters kids just had it and it was really rough for her two year old, her six month old had one bad day and that was it, and neither adult got it. I don't know about being an asymptomatic carrier, tbh, but I don't think the odds are high enough your kids will get it to take any drastic action, personally.

Like you said, there isn't anything you can do. Except good hand hygiene and a prayer.
I'm sorry you have to go back to work and leave A alone. I went back Thursday. Wasn't as bad as I anticipated, but I missed the girls like crazy. Good luck tomorrow.

Thanks guys. The thing I am most stressed about is that the CDC website says adults can be asymptomatic carriers for weeks :-\ Ugh I'm going to be a wreck

I know this is a little late. But our daycare had it going around about 2 months ago.

I don't think my kids caught it (at least they didn't show any symptoms), so we were pretty lucky.

Our daycare was really strict about cleaning everything really good and they made sure all of the kids washed hands at drop off. We also made sure to wash both my kid's hands and mine as well once we got home. (shoes off, hands washed)

And know that it can take up to a week for symptoms to show, but the kids can be contagious at that point.

Thanks all for the moral support.
MIL said she washed her hands a bunch. And my manager told me to work from home to keep the kids away from the germs for the week. And Hubby's boss is letting home work from home a day or two to help tag team the girls.

So baths for both tonight and hopefully next week the germs will be gone (if MIL can stay away from SIL and kids)

Wow! That's so nice of your bosses. I just wanted to add that my DD had it when she was about 3 yo and it wasn't anything more than a rash for her. It made her feet itchy, she may have had a low-grade fever, but that was about it. It just went away within a week or so. Good luck! hope no one catches it!

That's amazing that your bosses are so understanding! I can't believe how much HFM is going around. My moms daycare has had 2 now and I'm just hoping that DD doesn't get it, poor girl has dealt with enough lately.
