Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Should baby's schedule go out the window when they're teething?

We were doing great on a nap/bedtime schedule (after reading Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Baby). Now that Lyla is teething, it's like everything has gotten way off track. It takes me 20-30 minutes to put her down for a nap, and sometimes won't stay asleep for more than 30 mins. She's been waking up crying because of her teeth, so I know she hasnt gotten any restful sleep lately. This AM she was awake at 5:45 (she's usually up around 6:30) and would NOT go back to sleep. I know I am super tired after last night's interrupted sleep. Should I just put her down for her naps when I can see she's ready....and not go by her regular schedule?  Will this mess her up once she stops teething to go back to her old schedule?? I put her to bed at 7:30 last night and she looks like she didn't sleep a wink!

  • Teething puts it all out of whack for most of the LOs.  Help her get some restful sleep and once teething has passed for this round you can get back to schedule.  It may throw the schedule off by the time you try getting her back to it but that happens every little bit any way.

  • I love Humphrey's Teething Tablets...my DS is having the same problemo's right now. All I have to do is give him three of those little tablets and he is calmer and more comfy.
  • Yes, I love the teething tablets too! Last night she was so inconsolable around 11pm that I had to give her Tylenol. She still didn't sleep well though. I just hope this tooth pops through soon so we all can get some sleep!

  • Also, since your baby is over 6 months they can have Motrin. I am boycotting Tylenol until they get all this recall stuff handled!
  • I'm glad you posted about this. ?I feel like I just ruined 2 months of good sleep habits/training in just one night. ?LO had a fever hovering around 101 for 2 days. ?I held her for her last nap last night. ?Then, I dropped our monitor and it stopped working. ?So, I had DH drag a mattress into the nursery for me to sleep on last night (We have window units for A/C and there is no way I would have heard her otherwise.). ?She kept waking up, at first I would get her up and rock her and she would go back for about 20 min. and up again. ?I wasn't comfortable letting her CIO because of the fever. ?Anyway, I ended up just having her sleeping on the mattress with me and basically nursing her all night long. ?The exact habit we worked so hard to break 2 months ago. ?I know it is going to make things 100 times harder tonight but I wasn't sure what else to do. ?She was so out of sorts and just not herself. ?She seems to be back to herself toady but still no teeth.

Sorry, to answer your question... ?IMO, you should follow her cues and put her down when she is ready.?

  • I'd just try to put her down at her normal times, but don't force it. Teething is a miserable time for everyone...good luck!

Motrin is owned by the same company (McNeil) as Tylenol.

  • Pretty sure DS is in full blown teething right now.  He took at least 4 naps yesterday and one was longer than normal.  I say if they are tired lay them down and go from there.  But lucky us he is still STTN - 6pm-6am!!!  But you could tell for sure he wasnt happy ...he seemed better this morning ;)

So to answer you I say go with the flow and try to follow the schedule but for naps if they are tired they are tired.   DS was barely lasting an 1-1.5 hours yesterday without being upset or tired.
