Trying to Get Pregnant

5 days late and a negative pregnancy test

My husband and I are trying to conceive. As of now my period is almost 6 days late. I've taken two e.p.t pregnancy tests, one of them was taken just yesterday and both have come out negative. I plan to take another one in a few days. Could I still be pregnant? I'm rarely ever THIS late.

  • How do you know you are late? If you aren't charting you could have just ovulated later this month.

  • I have an app on my phone to keep track of when my period will be arriving. I normally never go past 23 or 24 days tops.... right now I am at 29 days and still waiting for it to arrive. I'm trying not to get my hopes up.... but like I said before, I am never this late. I can't tell you the last time I went this long without getting my period.
  • If you aren't charting to confirm ovulation you don't know if you are truly late. You could have ovulated later this cycle. Our bodies are not machines and sometimes things go differently than "normal"

If the test is negative you are not pregnant at this time.

    It's a BOY!
  • Thank you guys. I'm still very new to all of this. I've been reading up a lot on charting your BBT and so on and so forth. I'm in no rush to get pregnant, when it happens it happens. I just find it odd that I am going this long without receiving my period. I know this question has been asked many times before, I read it all the time on here. I suppose it was foolish of me to even ask it. I just thought I would so I could get personal responses from people on MY situation, not someone elses. I'm gonna look at those links, thank you Pippacricket.
  • I don't get on here often... hence the reason why I haven't checked my other updates on topics. I don't understand how people can take it upon themselves to respond to women on this website that have honest questions about what is going on with their bodies and people like PenguinMG can be so downright rude in their responses. It really discourages women from wanting to ask these types of questions when certain people jump down their throat acting like they have all the answers. If you're not going to answer a persons questions with respect, then don't even bother responding to their thread. Not everybody can sit here all day at their computer on this website and not everybody is as familiar with all the TTC lingo. Show some compassion perhaps.
  • I think this is all. I appreciate some of the advice I received on here. You won't be needing to worry about me asking anymore questions. I just wanted a bit of advice is all... I see now that I came to the wrong place to ask for it. Thank you ladies, enjoy your day.

    1) If you aren't trying to get pregnant then I would suggest taking this time to revisit basic biology. You could have ovulated earlier or not at all. You are shooting in the dark at this point.

    2) I'm not sure how personal we can get here? We really can't know if you could "still be pregnant". If the test says BFN we can't know better, know what I mean?

Also, every poster that comes in with the "am I pregnant" business expects a personal response. I can't help put object because it's really presumptuous to expect anything from people you've done nothing for. We are not your personal search engine or oracle of the ute. I like to help, but I don't like to feel used.

I know that most of the posters are not meaning anything malicious by it. It's just the lack of awareness & self-centered attitude that drives me batty.

So yeah, I can't really do much else for you.

  • I don't get why lurkers think we're going to give them information beyond what they already know. Periods are weird things and can be late sometimes.  I'm not a doctor so I have no clue except to offer that advice, and I'm pretty sure most doctors wouldn't want to quoted on a diagnosis without seeing the patient's history anyway.  And why the hell are lurkers always convinced that a HPT (or 2 or 10) has inaccurate results?!?!  Trust the test results!

  • I was 5 days "late" too... that had NEVER happened before. I convinced myself that I was pregnant even though the tests said no. Until, of course I got my period. Lol

It's okay, @bzkneez.  It's a common question around here because it happens to a lot of women and no one is really taught anything in depth about their cycle.  So, a random late period that isn't due to pregnancy is confusing.  But, there are very legitimate reasons for it to happen.

I know it sees like charting is this "Zomg!  I need to get pregnant!!!". But, I actually don't see it that way at all.  Lots of women count their cycle days (as you are doing) to know when their next period is coming.  Unfortunately, that way is not always accurate, which you are learning right now.  Instead, I temp and chart so I know when my period will show up.  It's 99% accurate every single month.  It's fabulous.  Honestly, the pregnancy part is a second thought.  We have sex as we want and I check after ovulation to see if we hit the right days and if there's even a chance of pregnancy.

Temping and charting is just good for peace of mind.  Try to think about it in a different light.  But, if the end if, if charting isn't for you, then that's fine.  But, do understand the limitations of your tools.  You can count cycle days, but you'll probably end up in another limbo situation where you don't know if you're pregnant or not.  In that case - trust the pregnancy tests.  If you use OPKs instead, just know that ovulation cannot be confirmed with those - only predicted.  Ovulation might occur 12 - 48 hours following a positive.

If you want to learn more about temping and charting, buy the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility," take the tutorials on www.fertilityfriend.com or read The Newbie Blog.

I blame shows like "I didn't know I was pregnant."
YES.  This show makes people crazy.  Even people who are usually rational.

Darn you, @primrosemama, now I have to go watch Aladdin and cry my eyes out.

Oh my gosh it was on TV today and I was just tearing up at random parts and of course at the end when Aladdin tells him he's free. Also, they added an "in memorium" thing at the end too.

honey, our bodies chop and change all the time for whatever reason. Maybe you have been worrying more than normal or something, or maybe your body just doesn't want to ovulate right on schedule every month.. It would be impossible we'd have to be robots. I've been in the boat of just charting days.. Trust me hun it's exhausting and not worth it because when the chart says your supposed to be bleeding and you think your late.. Your actually not and it causes unwanted stress which then delays the period further causing more stress. If your going to chart anything you may as well do it right buy a thermometer and chart BBT. Listen to your body it will tell you when it's ovulating you'll know..

"Our bodies change frequently. Nobody ovulates on the same day every month. We aren't robots.

I have tried just counting cycle days. It's not helpful because you can't pinpoint ovulation. You may think you're "late", but in reality you have just ovulated later than you thought.

If you want to avoid this stress we recommend charting your BBT on an app like Fertility Friend. This way you can be in tune with your body and when ovulation is and from that, when your period should arrive.

    Good Luck!"

  • @icaughtfire @DarcyHermione‌ @FJM85‌ @wickedsugar‌ baby dust comment has been removed. I didn't think before posting silly of me what I was trying to say is relying on charting days only is not the best for reliability.. Suppose I should have just said that instead of ranting.
