Pgal mommies who have had their first ultrasound

Hi everyone I am new here and had a couple questions. I had a early mc (they call it a natural abortion but I don't like the way that sounds) in feb. since I work in a hospital and have a great boss, when I had some brown discharge, she told me to see if my doc could squeeze me in. So I went downstairs and saw my doc she still said everything could be fine but wanted to schedule an ultrasound today while I was working just to make sure. I thought at this time I was 9 weeks. So I went on my break and had the ultrasound done. Worst ultrasound ever! They obviously knew something was wrong since they don't let you look at the screen and don't tell you anything. I am doing this whole thing without my dh. Then they told me the horrible news and I just went back to work. I officially had my mc on valentines day. So my real question is I have my first appt on Tuesday and for all pgal mommies out there, when did you have your first ultrasound? Did they treat it like a normal one where you can actually see the screen or do they not tell you anything?

I had an ectopic pregnancy that my body tried to miscarry end of 2010 And because of that my OB wanted labs done ASAP when we got a positive, so I went in at 4 weeks 3 days had us at 5 w and again at 6 w to verify placement and heartbeat all was good with both of those. I wish you all the best and don't worry. We got to see the screen both times, it was exciting to see and know it was ok.

  • I had my first one for this pregnancy at 9 weeks. They kept the screen turned away & didn't tell me anything. It was a horrible flashback for me. Just before I left the tech says "don't worry, there's a baby & a heartbeat".

I had to have my u/s done through the hospital because my doctors office doesn't do them. It's hospital policy to not show the screen or share information. It sucks.

It probably depends on the policies of your office. Mine turns the screen away at first while they check things, then turn it so you can see.

ETA: I had my first ultrasound when I thought I was 8 weeks, but my dates were off and I was only around 6 weeks.

  • I had my first at 6 weeks, aprox. Transvaginal and our doctor does let us see, and take pics of the screen. I am so sorry this has happened to you. My heart goes out to you.

  • I think the screen policy depends on the practice.  My OB's office uses a large tv as the monitor and it's always in view.  I went in for my 1st appointment at 8wks and was told that I was measuring 5 days behind but we have a great heartbeat and everything else looks great.

I know it's nerve wracking, but try not to worry. Sending you good thoughts for your 1st u/s on Tuesday.

  • I had my first ultrasound at 7 weeks. They kept the screen turned away from me the whole time and would not allow my husband in the room. After the tech had gotten everything she needed she then went and got my husband and turned the screen towards both of us she explained what we were seeing and answered any question we had. It was very nerve racking to have to wait until the end of the appointment to see the screen and know that everything was ok.

  • For this pregnancy, my first u/s was at 8w4d, for the last pregnancy it was about. a week earlier. This pregnancy has followed the same protocol as those without a loss history, because I've only had one miscarriage.

My Dr does an in office u/s and keeps the screen turned toward her until she has seen or not seen what she needs to know. For the last pregnancy, I was not measuring on track so she sent me for an intensive ultrasound where the tech similarly gave no feedback until she had made the necessary measurements. They did bring me back in at the OB on the same day to talk to me about the results.

  • I had my first ultrasound at 9 weeks 2 days.  It was a normal appointment just like it was with my first (my DD), although she did do the ultrasound first and we talked second because I was nervous.  I saw the screen the whole time.

With my missed miscarriage I was sent to the hospital for an ultrasound since I had been spotting for a few weeks and had a bit of pain.  It was in one of those rooms with a TV screen so I could watch everything, that was horrible.  Didn't need a doctor to tell me there was no heartbeat.

  • The ER is more likely to turn the screen away from you, because the chances of you getting bad news there is much higher.  With this pregnancy, I went in at 6 weeks with pretty bad bleeding, and they started the u/s with the screen pointed away from me.  The technician was amazing, because when I asked her if I could at least see my baby, she let us despite the rules stating she couldn't.  She might not have if the development looked bad however.

With my second u/s at the gynos office at 7 weeks, they started with the screen pointed at us.  If it had been bad news, we would have seen the fetus already.  Luckily it was good news so I never had a chance to have them turn it away.

As far as my first pregnancy goes.  It wasn't a normal m/c situation, so I can't really help with that part.

  • I had a m/c at the end of August 2013. I'm pregnant again and I'm at 10w3d I believe. Last time I m/c at 8 weeks with only knowing I was pregnant for a week so I didn't even have time for an ultrasound. This time I recognized the symptoms right away and knew I was pregnant atleast a week before I even got a BFP. (And I never get my period) This time the dr had me do an ultrasound when she estimated I would be 7-8 weeks. They measured baby as 7w2d at my first u/s, and they have a monitor on the wall in front of the table so unless they disconnect the image the patient and visitors see everything, which was great. And I actually just had a second u/s as I ended up in the ER with heavy bleeding on Thursday. They did an u/s after a couple hours and the bleeding slowed and somehow there was a 10 week old baby with a strong heart beat..who wouldn't sit still! lol

  • @Peledreamsofrain‌ did they ever tell you what the bleeding was caused by? I went to the ER Thursday @10w with heavy period bleeding. No clots or tissue and bled for a good 3 hours then it slowed to normal period, light bleeding, then almost nothing by Thursday night. But they don't know what it was. when I called my ob before going to the ER she was like convinced I m/c but they did see a moving baby and heart beat

No, they never figured it out.   When I went to the ER, I had like 4 nurses/doctors tell me I was miscarrying, after my OB nurse had told me over the phone I was miscarrying.  Everyone was pretty convinced I was screwed.

To make matters worse, the u/s at the ER didn't show the baby's heart beating.  We had to wait over week to find out if it was even alive.

Sometimes there is just unexplained bleeding.  It's frustrating, but better than finding out that you have a subchorionic hematoma or something.  It took almost three weeks for the bleeding to completely stop.  I will not be shocked though if I spot again too.

  • @Peledreamsofrain‌ wow, sorry you had to go through that. And yes very frustrating. The dr at the ER was super nice and pushed for extra tests for me (even when hospital code was to do some base tests and that's it) she even did 2 u/s for me and before we left she told me she had 3 previous m/c but now has a daughter and she was pregnant again, which was great to hear. But she said in her opinion she thinks it was subchorionic hemorrhage that was causing all the bleeding. But still no one has any answers.

  • I had my first u/s this time at 7w2d in my hcp's office and she started with the screen pointing toward me.

For those with unexplained bleeding, I had bleeding for 5 weeks with Jonah that couldn't be diagnosed. I had tons of ultrasounds and no one found anything, then at my last u/s they suddenly found an SCH that no one else had been able to see. My doctor explained that the MFM has more high tech machines and this is probably why no one else was able to see it. But I was left kind of feeling wtf about it because I bled heavily for five weeks and how could no one see that? So it's possible I guess that there could still be an SCH causing the bleed and usually they're not an issue!

They didn't tell me how big it was when they finally diagnosed it but it had to have been pretty big. I mean, I passed clots the size of my open hand every.single.day multiple times a day for 5 weeks straight. That sucker must have been giant.
  • I had my first u/s two days ago and they treated it like a normal one. I was able to see the screen.

  • I had my first US at 5 weeks to make sure it wasn't ectopic. (I had ectopic pregnancy loss last summer.) and I went again for another one at 8 weeks and heard the heartbeat and actually got photos. The first US there wasn't much to see yet. I am 9 weeks now.

My first ultrasound this pregnancy was when we had guessed I was 9 weeks 1 day, but the baby measured 8 weeks 1 day. Strong heartbeat, they didn't even change my due date. I had figured my dates would be off because I don't have regular periods, so no surprise there. My midwife's office has a tv screen and you can see everything the whole time which was really nice. The only downside was ultrasound lady acted like kind of a b*tch and didn't really explain anything that we were looking at. I had to pry information out of her and she acted like I was a total moron anytime I asked a question. For example I asked her if the screen was a mirror image or not because I was trying to decide which side of my uterus the baby was hanging out in, and she proceeded to point to the middle of my abdomen and explain to me where the uterus is located. I wanted to throat punch her. Sorry, didn't mean for that to be a rant, guess I just needed to tell somebody about that! Lol
  • Thanks for everyone's responses!! I think I will bring SO just in case so I don't have to do it alone if something is bad. I just want to hear the heart beat this time and actually be as far along as I am supposed to be. I know that won't mean I am in the total clear but at least I will know it is better than the last time.
  • I miscarried at 7weeks in April and never got to see my baby on the ultrasound. This time around we made it to our first ultrasound at 8w2d and saw the baby right there on the screen with its heart beating away. Went to another OB appt yesterday and heard the heartbeat on the Doppler :)
    miscarriage 4/16/14 . new baby due 3/14/15!!!
