Upper lip tie

I went looking inside my almost three month old DS's mouth and discovered that he has an upper lip tie.  He is EBF and has never had latch issues.  I've heard/read that this can cause teeth and speech issues in the future.  Should something be done about this?  If so, when?  I've also heard that it's better to get it taken care of when he's younger, but I hate to rock the boat since he is BFing so well.  Could not doing something cause BF to fall apart?  Our goal is to go to 1 year.  Anybody with experience?  Any good resources you can point me to?  Thank you!

It really depends on how severe it is. For us, I kinda wish I'd clipped it when I first noticed it. It did cause some latch issues when his top teeth came in, and also caused some tooth decay. Around 2 he fell and partially ripped it, and it has migrated up a bit so there isn't a gap in his front teeth. His wasn't ever too bad though.

Talk to an IBCLC. And Dr Kotlow, a pediatric dentist, is like the lip and tongue tie guru. No matter where you live, you can email in pictures and they'll send you back an informal opinion. But a local IBCLC will have guidance for you.

  • My DS had a lip tie that u had clipped at 10 weeks old. He too was breastfeeding well, although it was causing me some soreness. I was told by the pediatric dentist that did the procedure that it may or may not cause dental issues, and showed me pics of kids who had lip ties, some who did and some who didn't have them clipped. He aid not all had tooth decay or gaps in teeth. I initially was referred to an ENTwho said not to do anything, and wait until he was older to do something if needed. In the end I decided to do it, because I'd rather get it done before he was old enough to remember anything. The procedure was quick and it didn't seem to bother him when feeding while it healed.
  • Thank you very much for your input!

  • My daughter had major issues with ers and once we had them fixed it was a total lifesaver. It absolutely saved our nursing relationship. I think it is at least worth a consult.
