baby position...

I'm 31 weeks pregnant. When will my LO start to turn head first, and how will I know it?

  • You've still got lots of time. As pp said, there are the few cases when babies don't turn, but most usually do by labor.

Where do you feel the strongest jabs? Those are probably kicks and can give you an idea of where the feet are. Big lumps poking out could be a head or butt. When you start feeling big thumps in your ribs or upper abdomen, babe has probably turned. Google "belly mapping"

With my first, I could tell when she flipped. It literally felt like my guts somersaulting and her movements immediately felt reversed. I don't remember how far along I was though.
  • An ultrasound at the doctor will tell you for sure. I am 32 weeks and had an ultrasound 2 days ago. The ultrasound showed that the baby's head is down near my hips. This makes sense considering I've been getting kicked hard in the ribs for the past 2 weeks now.

  • My OB checked LO position at my 32 week appt.  He is head down. Like people said you'll feel the most movement near your ribs.

  • My MW was able to feel the baby with her hands yesterday at my appt and she said it definitely seems like the baby is in a head-down position. I have been feeling a lot of movement into my ribs, just wasn't sure whether that was feet or arms or what.

  • I asked Tuesday at my 32 week appointment and he said it was to early to really tell yet.  Some days I feel movement high and strong, which I think are legs, but other times down low, so no clue as of yet.
  • My midwife even put my hands on his head to show me how she knew he was head down, and I honest to god cannot figure out what she was feeling.  It all feels round and lumpy and pokey to me...I never understand why people ask what position he's in, as if that's the easiest thing in the world to tell.  I might just be spectacularly bad at it.  I definitely feel the sharpest kicks in my upper uterus, and like @ nicb13 I feel hiccups down lower.

  • Mine turns on what feels like a daily basis... They don't have to turn and you don't have to know it's happening.

  • Well my last apt (2 weeks ago) my MW said he was head up. But I've felt more rib kicks than anything for a few days now... and definitely felt some "movement'' down stairs. (Like the hiccups)
  • Mine is still horizontal, which we can tell from the hard lump which is most likely his head and where his kicks tends to be.

  • Im pretty sure mine is still transverse.. I feel kicks to my left, jabs toward my back and hiccups to the low right.. :) I hope youre able to talk to your doc about it soon :)
  • This post is timely, as I'm currently enjoying vag hiccups right now.

So. I guess that means head is downstairs, and toes are what were jabbing at me all day. The More You Know.
