November 2014 Moms

Am I crazy?!

So I failed my one hour glucose test and the clinic called to set up the 3 hour test so I scheduled it for tomorrow morning. After I hung up I had a severe anxiety attack about taking the 3 hour test because of all the things I've read about people getting sick and passing out during it. So I called my midwives and they told me another option would be to test my levels with an at home monitor for 3 weeks to determine if I had gestational diabetes. I said I would prefer that to the 3 hour test and I start that on Monday.

Am I crazy for being a big baby and not wanting to do the 3 hour test?!

Personally, I'd rather do the three hour test and just get it over with, but I don't think you're being a baby or are crazy for doing the other. It's really a personal preference and I think it's great that you have the option!

  • I did the 3 hour today and it was no big thang. I even got two shots today too. I'd much rather do the 3 hour.
  • @Lmoist‌ I pretty much felt the same way about the 3 hour test as you are feeling. I failed the 1 hour as well but honestly the 3 hour test went way way better then I expected. Did you have trouble with the 1 hour and that's also making you nervous? If you were OK for the 1 hour, I would do the 3 hour and just get it over with. But of course, do what is best for you!
  • I as just reading somewhere else on TB that the in home testing was a more accurate reading of GD. Today is the first time I've heard of this. I don't know how true this is, but I thought it was interesting.

I vote for whatever makes you feel less anxious because it's your body. Nope. Not crazy.
  • I was fine for the one hour but suffer from anxiety and I can't help but feel that even if I passed the 3 hour test, I'd still be paranoid about having gestational diabetes and want to check my own levels daily anyway.

  • Do whatever makes you comfortable. Are they supplying you with a glucometer and test strips or do you have to pay for this oop? Just a heads up that sometimes the test strips aren't cheap AND a lot of meters don't come with (many or any) strips, so you buy both.

  • I found the 3 hour no big deal and trusted my passing results.  (Just doing a 2 hour this pregnancy...)

I hope you don't have to pay OOP for this!  My friend with GD had to test several times a day and her strips were almost a dollar each.  Although if it's just for a few weeks for you it won't be too terribly expensive.

  • Thanks everyone! I feel pretty good about my decision and my anxiety has passed since I made the decision. I don't have to pay for anything out of pocket- I'm on state insurance for pregnant women that covers everything.

Whenever someone posts a thread with this type of title I just want to say YES, lol! But seriously, no. If it's what you feel is best for you then do it. You said your anxiety is already going down so I think you made the perfect decision for you :)
I had the same reaction! When people ask if they're crazy, I always want to say YES, but its probably ok.

Also, I totally feel for OP. My midwife office doesn't usually do the one-hour first but jumps straight to the 2 hour. I asked about other options because I have a history of  passing out during fasting blood tests and since I don't have a history that suggests GD is probable, they said I could do the one-hour.

I also remember a woman in my prenatal yoga class doing this three week thing. She did it on principle (she was a little bit of a hippy, I think). She refused to drink the glucose drink because it wasn't something she would put in her body for her baby. If that's not your reason, I imagine its probably more annoying and uncomfortable than the regular 3-hour.

HAHA I just realized this is an post from yesterday. Good luck on your test OP!
