19 things your baby doesn't need

Re: 19 things your baby doesn't need

  • instead of a diaper genie, i bought a 6 dollar rubbermaid waste-bin that has 2 clips on the side to keep it locked up, kept the dog out and small hands too. only time you smell anything is on garbage day when changing it out.

  • Sure, most of these are not necessary, but I don't agree with all being useless. Mainly:

You can't use a clip-on high chair if you have a pedestal table, which we have. I bought one and had to return it and buy a regular high chair.

I also loved the hooded towels, and my diaper champ. I was not going to take dirty diapers out every day.

I also used the changing table the whole time my kid was in diapers (almost 3 years). Who wants to bend over onto the floor 10 times a day?

We still use boogie wipes. They are great for wiping away stuck on snot in the morning when your kid has a cold.

  • I want 5 items from that list...my especially when I am with my baby in the dead of winter in minnesota... thanks for the shout out... lol
  • We used a high chair, the cutesy towels, the changing table(heck I still use it with my 2yr old) and the diaper genie. The rest I agree with, unnecessary for us. Although the wipe warmer might have come in handy, but I just used my hand to warm them a bit before using them.

  • We didn't get boogie wipes until DD was a toddler.  Before that, you use a snot sucker.  But man, boogie wipes are AWESOME when your kid is sick!

We didn't have a traditional high chair at first.  We bought a space saver one.  I will say that having a full size one has it's benefits but as a been-there-done-that mom, I will say that this is the only one you truly need.  https://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-Booster-Seat-Blue-Green/dp/B00CSAWIP0  The reclining feature, cozy look, all of that is nice in theory but by the time your baby is SUPPOSED to be sitting at the table, they should be SITTING, not leaning back or being snuggled by their high chair.

I think a diaper pail and a changing pad are a necessity.  You don't need a fancy one of either, and a pad on top of the dresser works fine, but a changing table allows you to store all the diapers and diaper changing accessories so that's a huge plus.  We cloth diapered and needed a lot of "supplies" nearby.

If you plan to cook your own baby food, the beaba cooker would be an awesome investment.  We have a magic bullet and just used it, but the beaba has some cool extra features, like being able to steam the food in the container you mix it in.  Using something like that will save you a ton of money in the end.

Towels.  We still use hooded towels, although we use bigger ones now (that I made).  It's much easier to wrap a baby up in a hooded towel imo.

Fancy stroller:  Do you need it?  No.  Is there a reason people want it, aside from the attention factor?  YES!  Take an expensive stroller for a test drive and you'll understand why people spend so much on them.  I get everything used though and bought a used Bugaboo Frog.  Best stroller I've ever used, hands down.

Formula mixer.  I breastfed so something like this was never a consideration, but I know moms who lusted after it once it came out.  It does more than just mix.  It also heats the bottle up to the right temperature.  I imagine it would make life a lot easier for moms and dads who used formula.  I mean, it's essentially the same idea as a coffee maker.  It was a good idea for people who drink a lot of coffee and you'll be making formula a lot more than you'd be making coffee.

  • 2nd time mom here.

    We LOVED boogie wipes.

I only ever bought paci wipes for when we went flying-- not for pacis since DD didn't use them, but just in case we needed to wipe off bottle nipples or toys or silverware while on the road.

DD had colic-y type something or other for a long time, so hooded towels were AMAZING for us.  On some days, when all of a sudden all of our onesies have been puked on or poopslposioned on, we could take DD out of the bath and (for the first few months) essentially swaddle her in the hooded towel.  Now, at 2, she LOVES the hooded towels for her head, but still wants one of the adult sized towels to go over it because she's cold... haha.

We had originally registered for a thermometer because I have a hard time telling hot from cold.  I often run baths or showers and don't realize how hot they are until I'm red and light headed...  We ended up not being gifted it and just never bought it and I just make my husband run bath water for our daughter.

Otherwise, I don't think we used anything else on that list or we didn't get it to begin with.

  • FTM.  Despite this list, I still plan on getting a high chair and a diaper genie...... and I almost feel embarassed for saying this but I really want one of those keurig-ish formula mixers.  It just seems so convenient (lazy, maybe) to not have to go downstairs in the middle of the night!

I am surprised by how many people support boogies wipes.  I had never even heard of these.

Other than that, I'll probably skip most of the stuff on the list.
  • I agree w most but we bought the high chair and it helped us a lot

i love you, my little mooncake mahal kita

  • We always just used the keurig to heat water to warm bottles. We just made sure it was on before we went to bed. When we actually bought a real bottle warmer it somehow got super gross. I still have no idea because it was never overfilled or anything.
  • We used the diaper genie every day for several years.  It was nice to have and we don't even live in an apartment.  We don't use it as much now that DS is the only one in diapers and he doesn't use that many in a day, but when the baby comes will will start using it again.
  • I am on my 3rd baby so I feel like I have a little experience to share and I have to say I don't completely agree with the list either..

Diaper pail-great for the nursery upstairs we took it out every 3 days or so

Wipe warmer-yes maybe I'm a little guilty of spoiling my babies but I hated to see her flinch at the feel of a cold wipe

Formula mixer-although I tried numerous times to breast feed I had no success so I formula fed of course one of the worst parts was to shake a bottle for the hungry baby for minutes just to feed her and find chunks floating. I did also try the battery operated hand mixer but that could cause formula to splash everywhere making a sticky mess on the counter and bottle.

Boogie wipes-loved them always buy them in bulk for the house not only do they remove dry boogies easily they leave the face smelling great!

Baby food maker-I'm guilty of this too but if your into making your own foods for baby I think this is the best way to keep things mess free! You can steam blend and pour with one device!

Cute towels-it didn't matter to me if I had cute or not but my babies did have their own towels since their laundry wash washed separate in Dreft anyway. And it cuts confusion for everyone else in the family

  • I agree with all of these. I do have a friend that swears by the boogie wipes. I had a diaper genie type thing (diaper dekor I think) the bags were more expensive than the diaper genie bags so I'm contemplating getting a diaper genie this time around just because those dirty diapers do stink. We also got a high chair from a friend this time but only because our family will now be too big for us all to sit at my kitchen table. We used a booster seat with our first 3 though and still using it for DS. I do use a changing pad on top of a dresser but now it just has clutter on it and DS (2yrs) gets changed on the floor. I will be clearing the clutter and using it again for this baby though.
  • I honestly loved boogie wipes after my daughter turned 1, it loosened everything up with saline and was softer than wipes and tissue. As for the rest: def unnecessary items. Especially wipe warmer and bottle warmer.

Soon to be a STM and realize it will be ten times easier without all that garbage.
  • I made my own hooded towels for DD, they are super easy to make and we needed the hood to keep it on her squirmy body.

I used the space saver high chair and loved it, glad I kept it so I can use it for this one.

I used a changing pad on top of a regular dresser. And for us it was a must. My DD is almost four and we still stand her on her dresser to change her clothes.

The rest of the stuff I can't give an opinion on because I never bothered using any of them.
  • We have a high chair and oodles of stuffed animals lol. I also like the boogie wipes for winter when dd gets super snotty. We used a changing pad on her dresser. Sure it was easy to change her on a bed or couch but dh and I are tall and sometimes it was easier to change her on the dresser because I didn't have to bend over

  • I agree none of these are "necessary" and you can get by with way less if you're on a tight budget. But I agree with PPs that a lot of these items are really nice and make life easier.

Also, baby clothes freshly washed in Dreft may be the most delicious smell ever! Is it necessary? No. But I buy it because it smells delicious!
