If you need a laugh - dinner fail

So yesterday I was quite proud of myself putting a pork roast in the crock pot with a Campbell's slow cooker sauce before leaving for work.  I kept thinking all day how awesome it was going to be to have something other than mac & cheese, hot dogs, spaghetti, or cereal for dinner.  When we got home (I do pick up), DS opens the door and says, "why does it smell like poop in here?".  So I doubled checked, and the dog did not poop in the house.  Apparently he was talking about the pork roast (which was not spoiled, btw).  So I got a couple sides together and put a few bites of the pork on each of the kids' plates, since I figured they wouldn't be too interested in it.  When I put the plates in front of the kids, DD says, "why is there garbage on my plate?", and she was talking about the pork.  I was really mad about it last night, but today I can laugh about it.  So I thought I would share a laugh with you wonderful ladies.  :)

  • Crockpot meals are not my strength and are a rarity at our house.

What was wrong with it, the sauce?

  • I've had many crockpot fails.  They are either great or HORRIBLE.  The worst thing about crockpot fails is that it ruins a huge amount of food.

  • Are you sure something wasn't funny with the meat or the sauce? A pot roast and sauce is usually pretty cut and dry and hard to ruin. I feel like maybe this wasn't your fault.

  • I'm a crockpot newb and haven't had major disasters yet but that's because I haven't tried many things. Have you guys noticed a pattern in what causes major fails? Certain ingredients or sauces?

  • My crockpot tends to run hot so things overcook. Putting something in while we work or overnight doesn't seem to work. With a pot roast, I can put the roast in before leaving for work but cannot put the veggies in until later or they will be mush when we get home.
  • The first dozen times I used mine, everything I cooked tasted like bland beef stew. And DH hates beef stew, lol. I've found that things with very strong flavors work best bc everything gets less intense over 8-10 hrs. So barbeque pork loin, stuff with Rotel tomatoes, buffalo chicken.
  • I don't ever cook and I've always wanted to attempt the crock pot- but now I am scared! I thought it would be easy!
  • I use the crock pot regularly. I have found that most pork and chicken recipes in my CP's will be WAY overcooked and dry if I cook the recommended time. So I have found using a time to click on gets around that (meaning I put the ingredients in the CP, refrigerate overnight so the whole pot is cold, then use the time to turn it on mid-day).

Crock pot cooking does something to seasoning so you have to add more than if you were cooking on the stove or in the oven.

  • Sorry about your dinner fail.  I made a mac and cheese soup using a receipe on Tasty Kitchen.  It called for clove and I put WAY too much in.  The kids and I had one bite and I threw it all out.  Disgusting!  The kids were super sweet though saying they liked watching me cut up all the veggies.  :)
