bottle recommendations

DS used the ventair but not the wide ones - he just seemed to make a mess with them.

I put Dr. Browns on my registry but I am seeing negatives about the difficulty to clean them.

I made the mistake of going all tomee tippe for DS and they didn't work for him, can you recommend what you have used and liked.  I want to put a few different kinds on my registry and I have had little experience with the brands I am now seeing.

Re: bottle recommendations

  • There really is no right or wrong answer to this, because every baby is different... what works for one may not work for another.

We used Dr. Brown's as a newborn and switched to Avent sometime around 3m old.  Both worked for us just fine.

  • No experience but I have 10 glass 4 oz bottles (aside from the pumping ones). 2 Dr. Browns, 3 even flo, 3 born free, and 2 avent. Whichever lo seems to prefer is what we will stock up on for the 8 oz bottles.

  • I have dr browns, tommee tippee, and avent. Just going to wing it and see what works. Hopefully tommee tippee because I have the most of those.

  • I loved Dr. Brown bottles. I BF DS, so he didn't use them often, but I just boiled the parts in my large stock pop if I thought they were getting nasty. Other than that soapy water or the dishwasher was just fine.

I have a very good experience with any glass ones. This time I am planning to use glass ones as well. I have just read that not only BPA is bad but the other chemicals that have replaced BPA are just as bad. Here is an article on Discovery https://news.discovery.com/human/health/are-bpa-alternatives-just-as-bad-130128.htm

  • I made the mistake of registering for all tommee tippee bottles with DD, and she wouldn't take them. She eventually took the lansinoh momma bottles. So for this LO we have those two kinds, and I got a box of the munchkin latch bottles to try.

I'm using glass bottles for mostly environmental reasons, but I don't think it's fair to fear monger about using plastic.

  • I don't do fear mongering... These are scientific articles about scientific research... There is nothing more into it. BPA has been proven to be harmful and it seems that so are other BPA replacements. I thought sharing this can be beneficial for others.
  • We were fortunate that DS took the Medela bottles without a problem, so I could use the same bottle for pumping and feeding.  We didn't end up having to try anything else.

My favorite are the playtex ventaire but they only make the nursers now and I don't like the wide size of them. I also used gumdrops they're just Cheapos from walmart and they worked fine so I'm going to reuse the ventaires that I have and my sister just got me some gumdrops. I have some dr. Browns and my sister swears by them but I find them a pain to clean.

    Eta: auto correct is stupid.
  • I BF DS but I had the Avent classic bottles for when he needed to take a bottle and they were fine for him. I plan on reusing the same ones for this LO and hopefully they work fine this time too. I did buy a Como Tomo bottle to try out because I thought they looked neat and got good reviews.

  • I registered for Tommee Tippee with DS and they did not work at all, they squished his nose! Tried tons of other ones and finally landed on NUK working the best for him. Hoping either those or the Tomee Tippee work for this baby.

    Baby #2 - Born 10/1/14

  • I'm hoping I'm not setting myself up for failure with this, but we only have the Avent Natural Flow because they are my favorite that I've used (I worked for 8 years with infants in childcare). Hopefully our baby likes them. If she doesn't, I plan to try Tommee Tippees, Dr. Brown's, and/or Playtex VentAire.

  • I registered for all tommee tippee...but if the LO doesn't like them I plan to return them to see what will work. Good the babies r us has a good return policy. I have a friend who highly recommended them

I know Dr. Browns was a favorite for some moms but I wasn't necessarily a fan. I did a lot of babysitting at the tend to cause a huge mess.

If tommee tippee doesn't work I may try the avent bottles.

I guess everyone just has a different experience. The LO will really dictate what he/she wants.

  • Thanks Ladies, my DH made me get rid of of the ventaire regular, and I am bummed they don't make them anymore.

  • I find it slightly odd that people who think dr browns are a pain talk about the ventaires... With my niece my sister used all ventaires and I loathed them entirely. I hated that you take off the bottom and my aunt always accidentally put them back together without the rubber piece in the bottom so they would leak. She uses the dr browns with my nephew and yes, there are still parts to take apart, but I don't find it nearly as annoying.

  • @conradraging I think both are difficult to clean and put together.  I saw on the reviews most complaints around the Dr. Browns were about not being able to clean properly not being able to reach the spots of yuck build up.

I liked ventaire but they aren't good for formula sitting in them because they do leak eventually.  And there were a few times in the dark when I didn't put the bottom in properly but DS had no spit up or gas issues.  I also know that could have just been him.

I just want a few to try out and when I went to look I didn't recognize a lot of the new brands.  And they ALL seems to be wide nursers and DS just had formula all over his face.

  • With dd2 I used dr browns. I HATED those freaking bottles. We had more issues with those that they were worth and I will avoid those unless I have no other choice with this lo. I followed before use instructions and had leaking everywhere. We scrubbed them every which way and I still found mold starting at the intersection of the vent holes underneath. I threw them all away at that point, and I had a lot of them.

I haven't bought any bottles yet, I will bf for the first few weeks and then add some in. I am going to try a few different kinds and have no idea which brands yet.
  • I plan on BF as well as first.  But I have this huge fear my niece refused a bottle for a long time, over a year!  I want to introduce bottles in the first few weeks because I have to go back to work.  I think with DS we waited 3 weeks before using bottles.

    image

  • We have too many bottles from DS. Tried playtex drop ins, tommee tippee, born free, and similac bottles before finally landing on Dr. Brown's. He was a "chugger" with reflux and colic so Dr Brown's with preemie nipples was only thing that worked at first. I'm going to try similac bottles first with this LO since they're easiest to clean.

  • Plain el cheapo bottles with medela slow flow nipple. My kids hated the bottle and wanted boobies only. So we tried one of each and eventually it was just up to being hungry enough. We have one of each lying around here, but had tons of playex 4 oz storage bottles since they refused all my pumped goodness from work. So on the occasion they'd relent and eat while I was gone we just used those with the medela nipples.

If nursing is going well, don't be afraid of the bottle, vice versa no bottle will make nursing go better so don't necessarily believe all the expensive marketing about "closest to breast" babies are damn smart!! I swear I will get this baby to take a bottle :)

baby #3 arrived in September 2014...cannot get ticker to work no matter what I try!

  • Thanks everyone!

  • I bought a Kiinde Twist gift set that I'm hoping works out because it appears to be a very convenient system. I also have the Medela bottles that came with my pump that I've purchased the collars and nipples for. Guess we will see soon enough if either work out for LO.

  • My first used Avent bottles. I had two different kinds and he wasn't particular. I plan on using those again but I also have some new Tommee Tippee bottles in reserve if this little guy refuses the Avent ones. With DS I think it was like someone mentioned previously, as long as he was getting fed, he didn't really seem to care.
