I had my last pre-natal appointment on Tuesday before our scheduled c-section and he sent me over to labor & delivery for monitoring due to contractions and concerns with blood flow that he saw on the ultrasound. He basically told me if anything looks abnormal in my blood work he would do an immediate C-section. Well Blood Platelets came back at 111 (normal is 150 or above). So to me that means immediate c-section because that is what he said earlier... NOPE. He then said to me, "I don't want to chance a decrease in platelets since you are scheduled for a c-section next week so I am going to admit you for 24 hour observation and we are going to monitor your your platelets and do a c-section right away if your blood platelets drop from the 111. So they ran about 1 million tests to say that everything is fine and I can go home.
My doctor has run so many tests this pregnancy that have always come back great that I am starting to just get annoyed. I get the "better safe than sorry" but I do worry about the cost of a random 24 hour stay, the extra tests and the upheaval to our lives that happen when I am admitted. We scrambled to put our labor plan in place for DD and our dog, DH lost a day of work that he was saving for the baby (now he has 4 days with baby instead of 5).
I know people probably think that I am terrible for not trusting my doctor, but I am at the point that they have run so many tests that have never yielded anything other than more tests.
Re: My 24 hour stay at L & D- so frustrated
Granted, if I were sent to the hospital I'd kick his a$$ if he didn't come.
I think there's a difference between not trusting your doctor and simply being confused.
I, too, have issues with my doctor. I trust him completely...he's delivered 6 of my nieces and nephews and both my sisters recommend him highly. But my personal experience with him has been so up and down. I have to ASK him for information, like baby's heart rate, what I'm measuring at, if I'm effaced at all, etc. I don't feel I should have to ASK these questions...it should be common sense that a FTM wants you to tell her these things. I've also had some problems throughout the pregnancy that a friend of mine who is a L&D nurse was worried about, but my OB just shrugs them off and says he's not concerned. Well I AM, so please explain your reasoning or run a damn test to ease my mind.
After this pregnancy maybe consider a different OB if it would ease your mind a little. I've decided to switch to the midwife in my OBs practice. I had her for 1 appointment and she just made me feel so much more cared for and important.
Hang in there!! I hope things take a turn for the better as delivery nears!
