We have been giving DD purees for about 3 weeks now. Yesterday I decided to mush up a banana and let her get her fingers in there and "feed" herself. It was literally mush and not piecey at all and she basically gagged on it. I am scared to try giving her food now because I worry she will choke. I figured by 6 months things like mushed up fruit or avocados or scrambled eggs may be ok.....but I guess not? She doesn't have teeth yet which maybe makes a difference? I'm not sure, DS did have teeth at 6mo and was always so far ahead of the developmental curve physically whereas she is more slowly developing physically so it is hard for me to compare.....
Re: When did you start giving your baby "real" food?
I thought no eggs until 1 year old??
i wouldn't start giving her solid food like that until 8-9 months. i just started it with ds a few weeks ago. even if it's soft, they can still gag on it. ds still gags on things sometimes... it scares me to death.
Yeah after that experience I think I am going to hold off a little longer. She is so different from DS, I really have noticed a big difference between having a boy and having a girl too, he developed so fast physically but slowly verbally and she is just the opposite!
I want to say around 7 months. Once I saw that she was ok with puffs, I added Cheerios. When she was good with those I added in pancakes, banana, pasta.
We have also tried peeled sliced apple, carrots, celery, meatballs, hot dogs, goldfish crackers.
She also likes wagon wheels and she love love loves Lil Crunchies!
I think yolks are ok, but no whites...but, maybe I have that backwards...
I have been too paranoid to give him anything other than the gerber 1st foods, breastmilk and his oatmeal cereal. He's not sitting on his own yet, so I'm afraid to give him any kinds of puffs or cereals. He LOVES eating solids though and experimenting. Hope I'm not holding him back by being a worrier.
egg yolks are fine, egg whites are a no no.
We just started on more solid foods and adding more lumps into the mashed up stuff we give her (I make her food). I gave her hardboiled egg yolk in pieces. She turn 8 months next week:) There's no rush with fingerish type foods - I'd wait a while.
Eggs yolks are ok, you can do scrambled eggs ect. Egg whites are a definet no no until 1year.
I started giving DD some table foods at around 6 months (she started solids at just after 4 months). I wish I had known about BLW sooner, and I wouldn't have fooled with purees at all. Broccoli (I steam it) is a good one, because the stems act like handles for LO to hold.
We've been giving table foods since about 6 1/2 months. I can't say we do BLW because we do still do purees, but we finish up every meal with finger foods and I pick up a lot of great ideas from the BLW ladies.
DD does great with them. She gags sometimes, but that means that she's pushing the food back out - which is what she should be doing. She's great with foods: soft cooked peas, carrots, string beans, peaches, pears, apples, frozen bagels, etc.
This is what we are doing also (started at 6 months).
DS gagged at first but got over it real fast. Of course I don't take my eyes off him when he's eating anything just in case...but ya, it's scary at first. Now he's fine.

I've never really done anything processed due to allergies (except Kix which is a very recent addition). There are tons of better options for your LO
