freezer full of possible high lipase milk

I have a freezer full of milk 5-6 months old kept at negative 2' F in a freezer attached to refrigerator that I have recently offered to my ebf 6 month old. He spits out the milk and it has a harsh smell. Does this mean it is unusable? I never expected to need as much as I have stashed but I would hate to throw it all away. I pumped when he was a newborn because he was in the nicu . I was thinking about donating some and keeping some on hand just in case but now my baby won't drink it and I don't know if it is any good.

Re: freezer full of possible high lipase milk

  • I'd taste it to make sure it isn't truly spoiled, and if it's OK, I'd donate it.  If you go to HM4HB (human milk for human babies) facebook page, I'm sure someone could use it.  On my local page, there are posts where parents say their baby is fine with lipase milk.  If there isn't a post like that, just post how many oz you have available and that it has lipase, and I'm sure someone will jump at it.

  • Agree with pp. I've donated high lipase milk that was easily taken by another baby. Human milk 4 human babies was a great resource to donate.
  • If all fails and your baby does not take it, I would also suggest the HM4HB local FB page. I have just donated in a similar way and I believed my milk to have somewhat of a higher lipase. I could never truly tell as my LO never had any issues with it.

  • Thanks, ladies. I don't currently have any newer milk to test but I will try to determine in the frozen stuff is spoiled.
