VBAC and yeeouch !

STM here, but emergency C the first time so this is my first time recovering from a vaginal (med free and not by choice!) birth.

I tore and have a couple stiches and a lovely hemmorrhoid. The first couple of days (DD was born on Saturday) wasn't too terrible... now everything burns and stings like a bitch. I've been taking ibuprofen, using the sitz bath and "padsicles", using Tucks... and not a lot of relief. Is this just something that I need to deal with and the pain will eventually subside? Any tricks/ tips for relief??

Re: VBAC and yeeouch !

  • Have you been using the peri bottle religiously when you have to pee? I remember the stinging from last time and keeping everything really clean helped. After a week I started to feel much better. Of course I'm not there yet since this baby is quite stubborn and not ready to get out.

  • I second the peri bottle.

Also, are you taking over-the-counter ibuprofen or did they prescribe you stronger stuff?  I was prescribed 800mg which was super helpful.  They also prescribed me percocet, but I stopped taking that after the 2nd or 3rd day.

  • Peri, derma, ice packs pads, and ibuprofen. By one week things were a lot more manageable though I was tender for awhile and had to be careful. Good luck!! Tears suck.

  • Thank you everyone!

I have been using the peri bottle.

I don't have a script for any pain meds -- just taking OTC ibuprofen. At the hospital all they gave me was extra strength Motrin.
Will definitely get some dermiblast !

  • Lidocaine gel.  AWESOME! Mine was a script, but my dr filled it for me in the hospital.  The biggest thing that helped me was staying on top of taking pain killers without even testing to see if I could handle it.  And ice.  Lots of ice.

Peri bottle and sitz baths were amazing too.  The only thing with using the peri and the sitz religiously were that my stitches dissolved early after my second birth.  My dr had me come in and check, but said that healing was going fine and not to worry about it.  Just putting that possibility out there.

  • Congratulations first of all :) I second what everyone else have suggested (dermiblast helped me so much) but I just wanted to let you know that I am almost 100% pain free 1 1/2 weeks pp. It sucks, but it does get better quickly!

You could probably ask your OB for a script for something stronger (or just to take a higher dosage of OTC stuff).  I would say it's worth a call if you're in a lot of pain.
