Baby Names

Adalyn/Adelyn

I know there are a bunch of Adalyn's running around, but is this really a name? I'm kind of loving it, but I do not want a made up name. Do you like it? How would you spell it?

I know more Addies/Addys than I can count.  Addalyn, Adalyn, Addison and Addyson are the versions I've most commonly heard.  I would use Adelaide or Adeline if I used this myself, but I wouldn't due to the popularity in my area of Addie/Addy.

    Adeline is a name.

We have considered that, but I much prefer the pronunciation of the name Adalyn. We may end up doing Adeline though.

  • It is such a common name now that I think you can use it without fearing that people will find it particularly strange.

As an ex-elementary school teacher, I can't help but think of the ADD drugs. Adderall + Ritalin = Adelyn. But that may just be me.

Adeline has two pronuncations: add-uh-leen and add-uh-len.  I love the add-uh-len pronunciation and it is so close to add-uh-lyn.

I personally would use Adeline over any other dumbed-down spelling (adelyn, addelyn, etc).  It's the same feeling I have towards Madelyn vs Madeleine/Madeline.  The pronunciations you want are in there - no need to change the spelling.  Just correct people and move on.

Thanks for this! I much prefer the spelling of Adeline. Are you saying the pronunciation can be the same as Adalyn or is it more Ad-uh-lean?

  • Much prefer Adeline.

Adalyn has entered "eye-roll" territory for me because I see it everywhere.

Adeline (with the -LINE pronounciation) is very nice. I'm not a fan of Adalynn and all it's spelling variants. It is very trendy and smooshy IMO.

My preference would be Adelaide though.

This.  I'm not a teacher but I hear drugs when I hear this name.  I do not hear pretty/feminine.
  • I agree with pp's about Adeline. Love the name Aveline (Ah va leen)though so I am going to throw it out there for you.

  • My daughters name is Adelyn-she's the only one I know. Lots of Addison's in my area but every time someone asks her name they always say they love it. And I hear a lot that it's an older name. Very happy I chose this name for her
