But if your pancreas is working as it should be, what you eat shouldn't matter, IMO.
I agree with this. Unless you plan on quitting sweet and carbs for the remainder of your pregnancy, I wouldn't quit them prior to your test (unless your doctor orders you to). If I have GD, I want to know about it and I feel if I quit eating all the good things before I would be "cheating" on this test somehow.
I wouldn't do anything that could potentially alter the test results unless my doctor advised me to. The only thing my doctor said to do was have a light, non-sugary breakfast that day since my appt isn't until 12:45.
I got the instructions from my dr yesterday for my test in a few weeks. He said to eat as normal but no sweets for 24 hours before the test. I'm sure all doctors are different though and there is probably different tests/variables, so I'd ask your doctor specifically for what he suggests.
my dr didn't give any instructions but after all the discussion here regarding fasting i called to ask. The nurse told me to eat as normal more than 1 hour before the test. it seems every dr has different instructions so just call and ask.

When I failed my one hour, I asked if there was anything I could do to prepare for the 3 hour. The nurse advised that the test will show what's be going on for the last 12 weeks. There is nothing you can do to change the results now. At that moment I knew I was screwed because I've had something sweet everyday. Lol

Except that from my understanding it's not about whether you've eaten sweets or not, it's about your body's ability to process the sugar.
Both my OB's told me to eat normally. The only time you have to worry about eating before a glucose test is if you have to do the 3 hr. That one is a 12 hr fasting.
I had a morning appt so I didn't eat after midnight. When I made my appt they just told me to not to eat 2 hours prior. But I definitely wasn't going to worsen my chances of passing by adding additional sweets and carbs.
Its not about what you eat, its about how your body processes it. I'd personally want to know if my body wasn't doing what it was supposed to. Just follow your Dr's orders and you'll be fine.
I just had my test today and they had me fast from midnight last night until my test at 8:30 this morning. Now that might just be because my test was relatively early so if I was going to eat before it would have had to be before 6:30 AM (when I wouldn't be up anyway). Hrm. It's odd to me that it's different in different places. Wouldn't you think that would be more standardized?
N14 January Siggy Challenge - What Sucks About Work
I eat pretty Primal as it is, so the carbs I include are low glycemic index fruits and veggies. I try to stay away from grains and white starches. I don't eliminate carbs, which is extremely hard to do anyway, but I do try to stay within a range, which is about 75-100g a day.
If I do eat sugar it's in the form of low glycemic index fruits (berries and such) or dark chocolate (70% is my favorite).
I'm also not doing the GTT with the glucola drink. When I get to 28 weeks I'll test my glucose at home an hour postprandial after I break my fast, usually brunch-lunch time. I do this over a two to three day period. I eat what constitutes a normal meal for me as the reading will reflect what is normal/average for me (which the glucola doesn't do). I also eat a diet high in protein, which helps when it comes to digesting and breaking down carbs.

My appointment was at 8am and my doc told me not to eat past midnight. I got an 85 on the test... Processed that sugar like a champ... However also found out I'm anemic... You win some, you lose some
I'm guessing I will flunk. I already have insulin resistance but it is kinda different testing for that. I've been tracking whAt I eat on calorie counter for a 1900 calorie diet and always have a habit of cramming as much food as I can in those calories. Fruits veggies and protien. Problem has been having to drink milk and eat cheese. Why so many calories in those. It's not fair!
During my first pregnancy my ob told me to "carb up" the week of the test. Wtf? I will not be doing that this time.
OK @tarynleann I had to comment because my last pregnancy I failed the 1hr and for my 3hr test my doctor's secretary said to make sure I eat a chocolate bar a day for the few days leading up to that test...anyone I told said I was crazy and I swear I was instructed to do this! I passed too....
Maybe its to condition your body? Any other thoughts?
I did the one hour and didn't get any instructions besides eat normally. I had Cold Stone ice cream ( mint mint chocolate chocolate chip, yum!) the night before and a granola bar the morning of (my appointment was at 8:30). My level came back a 56. So it all depends. I would just follow doctors orders and not change anything to try and "pass."

I guess I didn't think of it that way.
