T1 moms.... meal ideas/suggestions?

My after breakfast numbers have been a little higher than I'd like so I'm looking for some ideas!!  I've sticking to 45g carbs per my doctor's request but still going up to like 160-180.  :(

Re: T1 moms.... meal ideas/suggestions?

  • 45 grams would be way too much for me in the morning. I can only tolerate about 10-15 grams because my insulin resistance is so bad when I first wake up. Even limiting to just 10 grams I still have to take about 5x as much insulin. So, I usually eat something small and then eat again about 2 hours later. I eat a 1/2 a whole wheat English muffin and a hard boiled egg.

  • @missnacholover I've been doing smoothies at home--usually some sort of combination of banana, berries, greek yogurt or milk. I add peanut butter or chia seeds to stay full longer. They usually end up somewhere between 30-45 carbs depending on what fruit and if I add peanut butter. That early in the morning I'm having a tough time with anything bread/traditional carb...although on Sunday we went for a late breakfast and I had a belgian waffle and never went above 100. I wish I could sleep in and hold off on eating until after 10 a.m. everyday!

Seriously, I do so much better on the weekends!
I have an appointment with my endo so I will discuss with her on Thursday.  Thanks for the suggestion @heie0008 - perhaps I need to drastically cut back on the carbs in the AMs.

  • I have been pretty much avoiding starchy carbs in the morning.  Cottage cheese and fruit has been my go to the last few weeks with a decaf latte 'cause I love me my lattes in the morning.

Oatmeal hasn't been bad either so long as I'm doing just quick oats.  Any of the flavoured stuff is spiking my sugars.  If I'm craving a hot breakfast I usually have my latte or a glass of milk first thing and then hold off eating anything else until about 10am when my insulin resistance seems to go down.

I've also started pre bolusing at least 15 minutes before eating if I'm having anything startchy in the morning.  That seems to help as well.

  • I drink an ensure drink on work mornings. 42g, enough protein. And no thinking much about the dose since it is the same.

  • Thanks all.  I think I'll ask my endo about doing a half an english muffin with PB.  That sounds yummy.

Today I tried to bolus a good 35-40 minutes before breakfast.  So far, an hour after eating, no spike, 136 and steady according to my Dex.  So perhaps I need a combo of lower carbs and pre-bolusing with more time.
