32 week check up

Hi Everyone,

Just had my 32 week appointment, baby had a good heartbeat, but I am measuring 30 weeks. Doctor said we will see where I am at in 2 weeks.. Trying not to worry, but is there anything I can do to help the baby with a growth spurt?? I also will request an ultrasound just to make sure she is measuring well and there is enough fluid in there. Thanks

  • My doc doesn't even tell me the measurements.  At first I wanted to know, and then I decided that he would tell me if something was way off so I'm happy just knowing I'm somewhere in the vicinity of normal.

  • Thank you so much everyone.. Doc did say LO was low near my pelvic.. Think I would rather not know what I am measuring ! Can be stressful
  • Please try not to worry about this! Fundal measurements are VERY approximate. I always measure behind... I was four weeks behind at my 24 week appointment, and an ultrasound showed baby actually measuring bigger than average, with normal fluid levels.

I measured 3 weeks small the whole third tri with my son, and he was born ten days early at 7 lbs 3oz.

I know these are anecdotes, but seriously, those measurements are just as much about your body shape as they are about your baby. Deep breaths!

  • Don't worry about this. My birthing class told us that measurements can be off by significant margins. And also that so much can happen in the last trimester in terms of growth and positioning. At this point I believe you need to take everything you hear from your doc with a grain of salt because unless you've chosen a doc that has a low C-sec and intervention rate, they are going to start thinking about your delivery and with that comes liability. Docs are in the unfortunate position of weighing your needs with their needs (Liability and convenience) so at times they give you info that scares you so you are aware, without explaining it. I'm just trying to be as informed as possible and is suggest questioning anything that doesn't sound right to you.
  • Thank you everyone !! Making me feel a lot better ☺️

Did you really just advise someone to take what their HCP says with a grain of salt?

  • Absolutely! It's important to be informed on your own. And to pick a provider you trust so you don't have to question everything. But not everyone can choose who they want. I'm an attorney in the health care realm so I see a lot of situations that warrant questioning. Just my perspective. The poster can take what is useful to her and leave what is not. I kinda thought that was the point of all this. Sorry if I offended you.
  • No worries .. I am not offended by anyone's post .. I am hear to get other people experiences/options .. Hence why we all post on here !

Recommending that someone take their HCP's advice with "a grain of salt" isn't just offensive, it's downright irresponsible and negligent.  If her ob did not inform her that her baby is measuring outside of normal limits, and continued on as if everything was normal, he also exposes himself to risk.  I don't understand how you can jump from her ob providing data to discussing c-section rates and advising against listening to her physician.

Patients should always be their own advocates; ask questions, bring in clinical trials, preclinical studies, observational studies, whatever their heart desires.  Challenge me to explain things to you; but don't expect a physician to have all the answers.  And never advise someone to take their physician's advice with a grain of salt. I'm still baffled by this "advice".  Recommend that someone get a second opinion, conduct research (and no, posting on an internet message board is not research), but point blank advising someone not to listen to their medical professional?  WTF?

I have a lot more to say on this from a professional perspective, but I'm so dumbfounded by the verbiage "with a grain of salt" I'm having a difficult time putting it into words.....  So, who should she listen to with more than a grain of salt?  Internet?  Pubmed?  Studies that she can read but probably doesn't have the clinical or statistical background to properly interpret?  No one?

ETA: I should clarify, I'm not a physician; I consult on cases where my specific expertise is applicable.
