Sleeping on your back

I wake up multiple times a night to find I'm on my back. Any of you found a way to avoid it?

Re: Sleeping on your back

  • I do sometimes and I just move back onto my side. Sometimes it's hard to control when you're sleeping, but I have found sleeping with my body pillow (or something similar) keeps me on my side most nights. Actually, it's getting hard to move in general most nights!

  • I usually just roll back over. Or try to keep my body pillow wedged under me so that Im a tiny bit tilted to one side.

  • I agree with PPs. I used to always be a side sleeper but during pregnancy, I tend to find myself on my back. The pregnancy pillow has helped a lot because it keeps me in one spot throughout the night with lots of support.

  • I always find myself on my back. I was getting really nervous because it was the only position that didn't give me back pain in the morning. I talked with my Dr about this and she said that as long as it doesn't hurt or isn't uncomfortable to sleep on my back, then it shouldn't be a problem. She said there are a lot of people out there that find it harder to breath, get lightheaded or who have back/hip pain when lying on their backs and for them it's important to find a new position. She said that our bodies will let us know when to shift if something isn't good for us. I have no uncomfortableness when lying on my back so I've just let it happen! But sometimes it does feel better to wedge a thin pillow under one side of my back, putting me at a slight angle.

  • I didn't realise how painful it was to always sleep on my sides until I got pregnant. Its a pain in the butt, constantly wanting to give my hips a break and sleep on my back; but when I do find myself on my back, I just roll over.
  • The other night I was dreaming that I was running and breathing really hard. I woke up and was on my back--breathing hard!
  • Pillows behind your back may help.

My OB said that your body should wake you up if you're on your back, and to just listen to it and roll back over. That doesn't solve the problem of the sleep disturbance of night wakings because you're on your back, though! I hope you find a solution that works for you soon. :)

  • I sleep propped up on a TV watcher with two pillows against it because I get stuffy most nights and that seems to help. I start on my side against it but usually end up on my back - I worry less though about it because I'm not flat but in a half lie down/half sit position. Usually when I wake on my back I just turn over to whichever side feels better. Sometimes I worry in the a.m. when I know I've been on my back (even propped) a lot in the night but then I feel Lo kick and all is well. :)

  • I wedge a body pillow under one side of my back. It helps, but doesn't always prevent.

  • I generally wake up on my back. I have back issues, but I still sometimes find that it relieves a bit of tension when laying on my back....rolling over on to my side, though, is when I really feel the back pain from having been on my back.

So far, it doesn't affect my heartrate or breathing, so I'm not too concerned about it.

  • I agree with pillows behind your back. I do that to be at a slight angle. Sometimes I have to roll to my back because it aches too much to stay on my side.

I found that along with the body pillow if you steal a large cushion from your sofa or even a big comfy chair and wedge it along side your wall you will find there isn't much of an option to wiggle around while sleep. Especially with the body pillow lo holding you in place. Hope this may be of some help!

  • I still wake up on my stomach some times (seriously, how does that even work?), my ob says to just roll over when you notice it when you wake.  I have a full body pillow on one side and one normal pillow behind me to keep me wedged and most nights it works.

I sort of wake up on my stomach sometimes. Although it's more of "tenting myself up" with one leg so that my belly isn't totally being squished. Sort of like this (but my bent leg is holding me up a little bit more and not letting me be completely flat):

This is me every night, and I just roll with it.  If I ever roll to my back I wake up almost immediately b/c I'm one of those who just can not breathe that way.  I feel like I can't breathe on my back NOT pregnant.

  • My OB also said to not be concerned if I wake up on my back (or even occasionally fall asleep on my back) - my body will know when it needs to move and either have me roll over or wake me up (and let's be honest, if I wake up, I am going to get up and use the bathroom so I will re-position myself anyways).  So far, the only issue I have had with occasionally sleeping on my back is some restless leg tinglies.

I did, but I'm about done with it. I'm sleeping propped up on 4 pillows, so I'm basically sitting up, and that hurts my butt, but I can't sleep on my sides, because that hurts my hips. I'm ready to just sleep on my back. Fuck it.

    Lol nope.
I have a few other things that worry me, I'm not saying I don't, but this just isn't one of them.
I am with you guys. I care more about being comfortable and lack of back pain then if I am always on my side.
After I spoke with my Dr., I'm no longer worried and have faith in my body to tell me when NOT to do something. So far a mix of side sleeping and back sleeping is working best for me to get sleep and not wake up with back pain (or as little as possible). I'll take it!

  • I've always been a side sleeper, so I rarely wake up on my back. However, my MW said that either side or my back are safe as long as I'm comfortable, so I wouldn't worry! One of my friends has had success with the snoogle keeping her on her side. I just sleep with a pillow between my legs and I hug another one!

This is me exactly and my OB said the same. I also like putting a thin pillow under one side of me too to sleep at slight angle.

  • I doubt if that can be avoided, but onc I find myself in that position,I turn to my side ;)
  • I still find that I wake up on my stomach. I just can't help it but if that's the only way I am comfortable it can't be too horrible. I kinds of tent myself with my leg as well
