Pregnant after a Loss

After you see h/b, risk goes down?

Sorry ladies for all the freaking out questions but I am freaking out a little bit, I wish I could have an u/s every week.  Does anyone know how much the risk of m/c goes down too after you see the h/b on an u/s.  I know the risk doesn't go away and anything could happen, but it is lessened right?

Re: After you see h/b, risk goes down?

  • after seeing a healthy hb, i believe it is lessened.  I am not sure how much though.  hang in there!  the early weeks are the hardest!

  • Yes, the risk goes down after seeing the heartbeat; it confirms that baby has implanted properly and development is on pace.  Your m/c risk will decrease again once you hear the hb on the doppler.
  • I think the risk drops to 5%

  • This is what I found online:

It's hard to say any exact numbers from the available research, but here are some statistics that certain studies have come up with.

For women with no vaginal bleeding, most estimates suggest that the odds or having a miscarriage after seeing a heartbeat are about 4%.

For women with vaginal bleeding but also a detected heartbeat on ultrasound, risk of miscarriage is about 13% according to one study.

One study found that about 17% of women with a history of recurrent miscarriages will miscarry after seeing a heartbeat on the ultrasound.

Mothers over 35 also face significant miscarriage risk after ultrasound detects a heartbeat, even though the risk does drop after detecting the heartbeat. A 1996 study found that women over 36 have a 16% risk of miscarriage at this point, and women over 40 have a 20% risk.

  • My dr. said that the chance of m/c goes down to 2-3% after you see the h/b.
  • Not to freak you out, but I was one of the small few who experienced a loss after seeing the hb on ultrasound.  I had my first u/s at 8 weeks, then had a m/c at 11 weeks.  Not sure what happened, guess it was just one of those things.  I've already seen the h/b at 6 weeks but am still very worried and probably will be until I pass that milestone.  Overall though, the odds are pretty low. GL to you.
